Takes a long time for Firewall Policy Overview page to appear when running with more than 500 groups in SEP Manager...

For more than 500 groups, it takes 1.5 minutes to display the Firewall Policy Overview page

If you click the Add a Firewall Policy command, it can take up to 1.5 minutes for the Firewall Policy Overview page to appear. This occurs if the management server contains 500 or more groups. The problem occurs because it takes time for the Overview page displays all the groups and locations that the existing firewall policies are assigned to.

This happens due to the "locationCounting" settings enabled which is used to count and display the same for the user every time the page is attempted to open. When you have a higher number lets say more then 500 it takes ~1.5 mins to count and display the same.

To work around this issue, perform the following steps:

Close all instances of the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager Console....

After you configure database maintenance options, the new options are applied at midnight, and not immediately.

To configure the database options:

  1. In the console, click Admin > Servers, and then select a site.
  2. Under Tasks, click Edit Site Properties, and then click the Database tab.

To configure the management server to apply the database maintenance options immediately, you can configure the conf.properties file.

To configure the config.properties file:

  1. Open the conf.properties file, located in the C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\tomcat\etc directory by default.
  2. Change the following parameters:
  • Change scm.object.idletime=3600000 (in milliseconds) to a smaller number. The default setting is 1 month.
  • Change scm.timer.objectsweep=900 (in seconds) to a smaller number. The default setting...

Hi folks,

As you may have noticed, there are a number of Technical Support Staff members on the forums. As I review various threads, I'm seeing many with terrific answers by community members, trusted advisors, and the technical support staff that are monitoring these boards.

If your question is answered, please remember to click on the "mark as solution" under the reply that solves your issue. If you review a reply that has merit, and helps to solve the original question, please use the voting feature - this will help other community members see a particular thread has received votes - which often helps users.. The filtering on "solved" threads will also greatly increase the usefulness of this feature within the forums.

All in all, this functionality will help make the community a more "solutions" oriented site and bring the best content "up to the top."

Thank you,

Eric

SEP Small Business Edition 12.0 has a number of optimizations to ensure it “simply” works in a Small Business environment. One of the those features is the Intelligent live Update capability which I will discuss in this blog.

One of the key things that administrators struggle with is ensuring that all the endpoints within their company have the latest virus definitions, IPS signatures, and other updates. This becomes more challenging with users that don’t connect to the corporate network often enough to download the latest updates from the management server.

Some solutions that we have seen small business customers implement is to install “Unmanaged clients” on computers that are always on the road. Unmanaged clients get their updates directly from Symantec servers but these systems don’t report back to the customer’s management server. The challenge with this approach is that the administrator does not get a status nor can he...

I would like to take the opportunity to share the latest status of Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0. In this update, I plan to review the latest maintenance release as well as the latest metrics we are seeing from Support. I will also give a sneak peak on what is coming next from the development team.

Maintenance Release 2 shipped to manufacturing in mid-April. MR2 includes severalfixes for customer deployment, significant improvements in SMB fit, as well as support for a few new releases from Microsoft (Windows Server 2008, Vista SP1.) This was a huge release by the team and it is making a big difference to our customers and partners. One example of the changes we made was around server memory requirements for Small Businesses. In the original 11.0 release, a customer needed 2gbs in order to run our management console. For most customers that dedicated a server to SEP, this was fine. For smaller customers that need to share the server space with other...

RSA went very well.  It is an interesting trade show.  It seems that the show has more vendors than customers.  It is a great place to network with other vendors.  For example, you can catch up on all your competitors (it is nice having them all in one spot.)  That alone, makes the trip worthwhile.  For this blog entry, I think I will keep it short and sweet and just highlight the three things that jumped out at me.

First, data protection was definitely an unofficial central theme.  From solutions that do full disk encryption to solutions that offer policy based prevention of data leakage, the show had it all.  I saw several interesting demos from companies like Verdasys and Utimaco.  Of course, Symantec has its own solutions in this space but as I mentioned it is good to see what the other guys are...

Well, it has been a long time since I have updated this blog.  So many things going on.  To keep this update (and future ones) maintainable, let me keep the topic this week to my participation at RSA.  RSA is in San Francisco this week.  This is one of my favorite trade shows since it is focused around Information Security. I will be giving a speech on Symantec’s view of the future of Enterprise Security on Wednesday morning at 9:15am.

Besides giving a speech, there are also a few areas that I plan to investigate at RSA.  First, I want to see how all the smaller NAC players are doing.  There are considerably less of them today then there were last year.  Companies like Lockdown have closed their doors.  Our NAC solution is doing very well, in terms of customer feedback.  I think building it on top of our endpoint protection product is making adoption that much easier.  In addition, having...
