Setting the record straight

Let me start by saying, like many folks, I’m a competitive person.  No matter what I do in my professional, social or personal life, I’m driven to succeed.  I understand that people will go to extreme measures to try and stay competitive.  That brings us to the reason for this post, desperate actions by a competitor that obviously has something to worry about.

As some of you know, I oversee product management for Symantec’s endpoint security business unit.  We recently launched a new endpoint security product called Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.  Symantec Endpoint Protection is the culmination of a year and half long development project here at Symantec in which we tightly integrated multiple security technologies, some of which have been developed in house and some acquired through various acquisitions over the years.

Before I dig into the topic for this blog entry, let me recap a couple recent and important events. As the reader should already know, Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 has shipped. The final bits were delivered to manufacturing on September 12th. That started a process of publishing the software online (Sept 19th) as well as on physical media (Sept 27th.) We have already won some large deals (competitive;) and we are seeing a big positive impact on our customer’s satisfaction.

Also, as I mentioned in my last blog, I spent last week meeting with Altiris customers at the Altiris customer event called Manage Fusion. The event took place in Orlando the same time as Gartner’s ITExpo. Therefore, I also took a chance to visit a couple sessions at the Gartner show (and sip a few drinks swinging in a hammock at the Swan during the breaks. ;)

The Hamlet development project is nearing the end.  We are in the process of creating what we think is our final build.  We call it a release candidate.  Once we pound on this build for a couple more weeks, we will ship it off to manufacturing (and online.)  Even though the development project is wrapping up, Project Hamlet for our customers and partners is just starting.  It has been a while since I wrote my first blog.  I thought I would update it with a few comments on customer migration to Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.
 
I am often asked whether the Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 release is a "fork lift" upgrade for existing SAV customers.  I know our competitors are certainly hoping it is. The truth depends on your perspective.  For a lot of reasons, existing SAV customers will have an easier time migrating from their current releases to SEP 11.0.

Hello there.  This is my first blog and I hope the reader finds it interesting and useful.   My team has been working on a big project inside Symantec code named Hamlet.  It is one of the most important projects that Symantec is working on.   Driving a project so critical to Symantec’s customers and partners, is both a lot of fun and a lot of pressure.  ;) In my Blog, I plan to write a lot about this release.  The topic this time is whether traditional antivirus technology is dead.
