Who was the one who held you in their arms when you let out your first cry in the world? Did you say “doctor?” Well, that may be true in some cases, but the more obvious answer is “mother.”

Dating back to ancient Greece, mankind held a festival worshiping Cybele, mother of the Greek gods. Mother’s Day is now celebrated around the world, mainly sometime in March, April, or May. The most common date is the second Sunday in May when, in most countries, mothers receive flowers and gifts in celebration of the day. How can spammers miss this special occasion when people are surfing the Internet to try and dig up a sweet surprise to express love and gratitude towards their mothers?

The following are Mother’s Day spam samples that Symantec has recently observed. There is a range of product spam, including flowers, watches, gift cards, and diet products. This latest spam campaign involved both dictionary and domain attack techniques,...

There are several special occasions throughout the year that help to deliver a sense of solidarity and unity among people. Social networking sites have gained popularity by linking people together from different geographic locations; hence, social networking sites promote special occasions because they encourage users to greet one another. In the last couple of months, Symantec has observed phishing websites spoofing Google’s social networking site Orkut. The phishing websites are trying to take advantage of the celebration of special occasions. Keep in mind that these phishing sites do not represent any security issues or failings in the legitimate Google or Orkut sites; phishing sites are created with the purpose of tricking users into giving up personal, secure information.

Legitimate social networking websites promote festivals or special occasions by changing their logo appropriately to reflect the prevailing trend. For example, Google celebrated Earth Day by...

Mother’s Day was yesterday—hopefully you didn’t forget! I also hope you weren’t too worried about getting a decent gift for your mom. There was no shortage of spammers who wanted to help you out with that. Symantec observed that spam related to Mother’s Day had, of course, increased since mid-April. Touching gift selections as well as flowers and greeting cards were being offered.

The following Mother’s Day spam samples were the most frequent types of messages that were seen. The messages came in hit-and-run spam form, the body content often changing from domains and promotional text to advertising images:

From: "eCards" <eCards@[Details Removed]>
Subject: Make your Mother smile this Sunday

From: Mothers Day Flowers <flowers@[Details Removed]>
Subject: $19.99 Mothers Day Flowers + Free...
