I’ve never worked on an assembly line, but every time I picture it, I remember the hiliarious ILove Lucy episode where she’s eating chocolates off of a fast-moving conveyor belt. I’m always amazed that in the real world, a row of people (or machines), each doing some isolated job, can pop out a complex product at the end of the line, without creating chaos.

LG Display used to experience assembly-line glitches that were extremely expensive and caused significant downtime—a far cry from the I Love Lucy episode. The company manufactures display panels for electronics in a fully automated process, and glitches in its MES software would completely stop assembly, at a cost of up to US$24 million per incident. But since rolling out Symantec storage, clustering, and backup solutions, LG Display has kept its MES up 24x7.

Starting with the April 2009 issue, we began publishing each issue of CIO Digest to the Amazon Kindle. Readers want to consume content in a variety of different formats, and the increasingly popularity of the Amazon Kindle prompted us to begin making each issue available on it.

The July issue has some really interesting articles, including an exclusive interview with Steve Vollmer, the VP of IT and CTO at Las Vegas Sand Corporation, features on ways to optimize storage investments and strategies on weathering the 2009 economic climate, and much more. Click here to access...

Symantec Super Session at VMworld 2009: Wednesday, September 2 at 10:00 AM

Of course I may be a little biased because I will be presenting, but there are a lot of reasons why you should make Symantec’s Super Session a priority during your VMworld 2009 experience

Steve Morton, Vice President of Product Marketing, and myself will present on strategies and best practice around pain points customers have faced during virtualization deployments

Steve has threatened to change the format on me, live on stage, and I am hoping this isn’t true. However, he is known to be a joker so I guess I will just have to wait and see what happens

Our goal is to share examples of how others have solved complex virtualization problems. You will see how a municipality in Florida was able to reduce a half-day virtual machine recovery to 15 minutes. This cut their backup time by 96% using Symantec solutions. Data protection and storage management...

The Amazon Kindle is one of the hottest consumer devices on the market today. Indeed, the Amazon Kindle 1 sold out for the Christmas holiday season several months beforehand, and the Amazon Kindle 2--available since late February--is generating similar results.

The CIO Digest editorial team, seeking to make content available to readers in multiple venues, is happy to announce the availability of the January 2009 issue on the Amazon Kindle. The team is currently working on posting the April 2009 issue, which will be available in a few weeks. We welcome your feedback.

The April 2009 issue of CIO Digest is now available and includes a special Executive Q&A with new Symantec President and CEO Enrique T. Salem and interviews with C-level thought leaders from organizations such as Unum Group, Memorial Hermann, Reliance Communications, and more.

The Executive Q&A with Salem covers a number of topics, from his leadership approach, to the key initiatives he’s spearheaded in prior roles at Symantec, to a special sidebar tribute to John W. Thompson’s 10 years of ten-fold revenue growth. The Cover Story is an interview with Lynda Fleury, the AVP and CISO at Unum, who discusses how there is no “Alpha” or “Omega” for an information...
