We are seeing great adoption rate for our newest SFHA releases (6.0 & 6.0.1) and customer escalation data shows a marked improvement in quality over previous release (5.1SP1). In the last year (Nov 2011-Oct 2012), deployments of 5.1SP1 and 6.0/6.0.1 releases were equal in number whereas the customer escalations received on 6.0/6.0.1 stream were just 40% as compared to those received on 5.1SP1. And the good news doesn’t stop there! It is common that an escalation does not actually end up in product code changes and the trend continues, significantly smaller number of customer escalations on 6.0/6.0.1 stream resulted in product changes as compared to previous release.

The VCS DiskGroup agent has a configurable option PanicSystemOnDGLoss. It enables fast failover of application on loss of storage connectivity or when disk group commands are not responding. On extremely busy systems, it can cause halting of the system due to consecutive monitor timeouts. Prior to VCS 5.1, it was set to on (1) by default. Based on feedback, we changed the default from on (1) to off (0). However, we could still only turn on/off the behavior. With VCS 6.0, we have added flexibility to set it to a value based on the use case.

0: Do not halt the system.

1: Halt the system if either disk group goes into disabled state or the disk group resource faults due to monitor timeout.

2: Halt the system if disk group goes into disabled state.

3: Halt the system if disk group resource faults due to monitor timeout.

■ Review the latest information on supported Oracle RAC patches and patchsets:

To apply Oracle patches

1 Freeze the service group that contains the Oracle resource and the cssd
resource:
       # hagrp -freeze grp_name

2 Install the patches or patchsets required for your Oracle RAC installation.
     See the Oracle documentation that accompanies the patch or patchset.
If the patch is for Oracle database software, after applying the patch, before
starting the database or database instance, relink the SF Oracle RAC libraries
with Oracle libraries.

3 Unfreeze the service group that contains the Oracle resource and the cssd

Based on the common escalations that I had handled for the fencing module in Veritas Cluster Server Product in the SAMG Division, one frequently visited aspect is to check the SCSI3 comaptibility the coordinator disks used for fencing.

As a best practice, it is always better to run the vxfentsthdw utility to check if the intended coordinator disks are infact, SCSI3 compatible. This step is a pre-requisite before installing/configuring fencing module in 'enabled' state for SCSI3 mode or 'customized' mode provided atleast one SCSI3 disk is involved.

However in some cases especially scenarios for array qualification, we have noticed that vxfentsthdw returns success because the underlying VxVM-DMP module returns success even if the intended operation did not succeed. Hence to make sure such scenarios are not applicable in your environment, it is better to run the following commands, in addition to running vxfentsthdw utility on the coordinator disks:

Configuration wizard for creating a cluster provides option to setup LLT with Ethernet or UDP/IP protocol. This post provides some details on which option to choose. 

Cluster configuration wizard (VCW) detects NIC cards available for configuring LLT network links on each windows server.  Selecting NIC(s) for each server configures LLT to use Ethernet protocol.  If is important to make sure that each NIC is connected (either directly OR via a layer 2 switch) via separate network hardware for increased fault tolerance.  This is relatively easy to ascertain for Ethernet, since connection traverses a few network components. All windows servers connected to same Ethernet  are able to discover each other (ARP) dynamically.  This makes changing network configuration for cluster relatively simple.
