If you are interested in learning about the latest Storage Foundation and High Availability 6.0 solutions from the comfort of your own desk, Symantec is hosting a virtual event on December 8th beginning at 8:00am PST.  At the event, we will discuss how Symantec is helping customers transform their existing infrastructure into a resilient private cloud, as well as providing a deeper dive on new functionality included in Storage Foundation, Veritas Cluster Server, Veritas Operations Manager, ApplicationHA and other solutions.

At the event you will learn how Symantec is helping IT organizations:

Data center leaders are constantly being bombarded with marketing blitz on how they can reach the clouds by buying new infrastructure, but the reality is closer to ground. At Symantec we believe that the private cloud is more of a transformation of your existing data center rather than a rip and replace.

Read confident insights article on how to get to private cloud:

I was thinking about cluster node counts the other day, and wondering about their distribution. That is, what percentage of clusters are two node, three node, four node, and so on. There are a couple of different kinds of clusters out there -- in this context, these are tightly coupled clusters for availability (failover) or concurrent transaction clusters (like Oracle RAC, Sybase ASE Cluster Edition, or Cluster File Systems) -- not large computational clusters (like BlueGene). I ran the numbers from SORT uploads, and got the distribution. Then I wondered whether Linux might have more nodes than AIX/HP-UX/Solaris. Linux fans might say "Naturally, because it's cheaper" while detractors might think "Of course, because SMP scalability is still better on <my platform/>." One or both groups appear correct:

You can see the white has fewer...

As IT organizations continue to rapidly deploy virtualization, ensuring availability of applications in their virtual environments is critical. Since its initial launch last year, Symantec ApplicationHA helped numerous customers quickly and automatically recover from a wide range of application and infrastructure failures inside virtual machines.

Symantec recently announced the latest release of Symantec ApplicationHA 6.0 for Windows. This release includes integration of Symantec ApplicationHA with Symantec Backup Exec which takes application availability to a new  level by providing another level of remediation to recover from failures in VMware virtual environments. This new feature provides virtual machine image restoration as a possible remediation mechanism if application restart and virtual machine restart both fail in recovering an application. In the event of a corrupt virtual machine or OS image, Symantec ApplicationHA coordinates with...

Things just aren't as simple as they used to be. There was a time when we could achieve nearly all of our uptime goals just by clustering our backend database servers and maybe a handful of other application servers. There was very little of that weird virtualization voodoo going on, and all our important
applications ran on physical servers.

Well, times have changed. Not only are a larger share of our applications considered mission critical, but our service level agreement expectations are much higher and we're under pressure to virtualize more applications in order to realize greater cost savings in the data center. To further complicate things, those applications have grown more complex with more moving parts. For those of us concerned with high availability and disaster recovery, this has presented some interesting challenges.

Consider, for example, an online...
