Data centers the world over are struggling to address many challenges today. These challenges center on keeping costs down, reduced resources whether it be capital or people resources, increasing storage costs and demanding SLAs. For many data centers the answer is to move to a private cloud or a private cloud like model.

We at Symantec have been talking to you, our customers and have been trying to understand and address some of the challenges in implementing a private cloud. These challenges can be broadly categorized into servers, storage and cloud management. On the server side availability for business services in a heterogeneous environment is an issue, one that could potentially be very expensive. On the storage side there is a need for a 'Storage as a Service' model that works across heterogeneous storage. Finally, we need a way to tie it all together and manage it such that you have visibility in a single pane.

In this white paper, Symantec, Storage...

Join us at Symantec's biggest annual user conference at Vision 2011, which will be at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas between May 2nd and 5th. The Storage and Availability Management team will bring you new information about our latest products including:

  • Veritas Operations Manager 4.0 or VOM, which enables administrators to manage heterogeneous applications, server and storage environments with a single pane of glass. VOM is a free comprehensive management platform for Storage Foundation and Cluster Server environments enabling customers to maximize their investments while automating operations and therefore minimizing IT costs.
  • Our virtualization offerings, such as VirtualStore and ApplicationHA, help companies protect applications in virtual machines and reduce the storage costs that come with going virtual.
  • FileStore, one of Symantec's hardware products, and learn more about our appliances strategy.

Product Description:

Symantec ApplicationHA provides monitoring capabilities for applications running

inside virtual machines hosted on ESX or ESXi hosts managed by aVMwarevCenter

Server.

Symantec ApplicationHA adds a layer of application awareness to the core

High Availability functionality offered by VMware virtualization technology.

Symantec ApplicationHA is based on Veritas™Cluster Server (VCS) and internally

uses similar concepts such as agents, resources, and service groups. However, it

does not include the high availability cluster components such as the Global

Atomic Broadcast (GAB) and Low Latency Transport (LLT).

Symantec ApplicationHA has a lightweight server footprint that allows faster installation

and configuration.

New Release: Introducing Symantec ApplicationHA

We are very excited to announce that Symantec ApplicationHA is now available.  ApplicationHA leverages more than 12 years of development of Veritas Cluster Server to provide an application-monitoring package that runs inside a VMware guest operating system and fully integrates with VMware HA to provide virtual machine restart as needed to react to any application issues.

Combined together, this solution:

  • Enhances the availability of business-critical applications by providing a mechanism to detect and recover from application failures in VMware environments
  • Improves the manageability of virtualized applications by providing visibility of the application’s status and application control (that is, starting or stopping the application) through a single pane of glass — VMware vSphere Client, the user...

To maximize efficiency of current IT resources, organizations are virtualizing an increasing number of applications in the data center.  There are many benefits from virtualization such as cost savings for power, cooling and space.  However, not all IT organizations are comfortable with the risk involved when virtualizing business critical applications.  There are several reasons for this.  For example with basic VMware HA, customers do not have visibility into application availability and often issues must be resolved manually after being reported by people using the services that application provides. Current solutions around this either degrade performance or eliminate VMware functionality like vMotion and DRS, resulting in most customers not virtualizing their business critical applications.  Symantec is now announcing ApplicationHA.

To solve the virtualization challenges, Symantec ApplicationHA leverages VMware HA’s app-awareness API to...
