It is hard to find an IT organization that is not experiencing a tremendous amount of pressure when it comes to managing their data growth and I/O performance requirements. This is especially true in virtual environments as virtual machines are easy to spin up but have an impact on the amount of storage capacity required and on performance characteristics.

In the two-part blog series below, DCIG highlights how Netapp storage systems seamlessly work with Symantec products, specifically Dynamic Multi-Pathing (DMP) for VMware and Data Insight. Find out how these technologies can help you efficiently manage and control your structured and unstructured data and I/O performance in virtual environments.

Virtualization has become THE buzzword within the IT community; in some circles it’s even bigger than Cloud. As with any new technology the buzz comes along with a considerable amount of hype and risk. Virtualization does have very tangible benefits to organizations, however wading through what’s real and what’s not can be a challenge.

Listen to this webcast to hear about:

  • The risk of moving business critical applications to virtual environments
  • How to avoid these risks and still reap the cost savings benefits of virtualization
  • How to take advantage of your physical infrastructure in tandem with your virtual environment

The on demand webcast is available at http://www.symantec.com/offer?a_id=147034

As customers pack more virtual machines on physical servers, storage I/O bottlenecks that impact performance are unavoidable.  Because of this, customers are limited to the number of applications they can move to virtual machines.  Native tools address part of the problem, but do not provide granular I/O policies to keep performance and data availability at an optimal level.

Symantec solves the entire problem with Veritas Dynamic Multi-Pathing (DMP) for VMware. DMP for VMware is a solution that helps customers optimize performance and keep data available, even when a path fails.  DMP for VMware distributes I/O from server to storage based on seven pre-defined policies. These policies can be employed based on workload characteristics like read/write ratio, block size or sequential versus random access.  DMP for VMware includes visibility of the environment to not only show how paths are mapped from server to storage, but also the...

You've Already Virtualized, Now What?

Virtualization is everywhere, but IT organizations are still looking for ways to cut costs.  One way to do that, is to…  virtualize even more applications!  However, the easy stuff has been done.  File and print servers, cafeteria menus and the company picnic blog have been virtualized.  The next step is to move up the chain and virtualize business and mission critical applications.  But the risks of virtualization are still there.  How do I monitor and protect my application and business services in the event of a failure, or even a site wide disaster?  What happens to the performance or availability of my data when a path connecting a virtual machine to the storage fails?  These are the roadblocks that are preventing IT organizations from virtualizing more of their business critical services and applications.  The good news is Symantec can help...

I have been working for Symantec for more years than I care to remember. I joined through the Veritas acquisition some 6 years ago. In that time the datacenter has changed incredibly, before joining Veritas I was a systems administrator, this was long before the concept of SANs were mainstream and most UNIX systems simply had direct attached storage. I think it’s fair to say that at some point over the past 10 years the datacenter began transitioning from physical to virtual and we at Symantec were very guilty of not adapting our solutions quickly enough. We went on selling our traditional clustering and storage management tools which while they have always been best of breed weren’t necessarily a good fit in virtual environments. Thankfully due to the strength of our portfolio our product team began to reinvest into adapting our solutions specifically into the virtual space. The upshot is now although there is still much development and innovation under way we have a...

DMP is the industry’s leading multi-pathing solution, offering heterogeneous storage array support, performance and error recovery policies. This session will focus on the architecture of DMP. It also covers such topics as how best to tune the system, which load balancing policy to use, as well as how to leverage DMP deep discovery to address challenges in consistent storage visibility across data center.
