Data centers the world over are struggling to address many challenges today. These challenges center on keeping costs down, reduced resources whether it be capital or people resources, increasing storage costs and demanding SLAs. For many data centers the answer is to move to a private cloud or a private cloud like model.

We at Symantec have been talking to you, our customers and have been trying to understand and address some of the challenges in implementing a private cloud. These challenges can be broadly categorized into servers, storage and cloud management. On the server side availability for business services in a heterogeneous environment is an issue, one that could potentially be very expensive. On the storage side there is a need for a 'Storage as a Service' model that works across heterogeneous storage. Finally, we need a way to tie it all together and manage it such that you have visibility in a single pane.

In this white paper, Symantec, Storage...

This week Symantec is announcing Veritas Operations Manager 4.0 and Veritas Operations Manager Advanced. We’re really excited on the Storage and Availability Management team to deliver these new solutions that we believe address some of the key painpoints our customers are facing as they implement virtualization and cloud computing. In reality, these are the same challenges data center managers have been facing for years. What we want to do is help them deliver high service level times, prevent downtime so their businesses can be up and running and then ensure they’re operating with the highest levels of efficiency.

When you introduce new technology like virtualization or thin provisioning there’s always risk; and we want to help you get visibility and minimize that risk so these critical applications can remain online and perform their required functions. As you move to the private cloud there’s also the need to automate. IT has to deliver services...

Ballooning  storage costs? , Symantec to the rescue

Storage requirements in the data centers have been increasing dramatically over the last decade. IDC predicts annual storage system shipments will increase to 76.9 exabytes by 2014, a 49% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). At the same time  data centers are trying to figure out ways to cut costs both in terms of capital expenditure ( Capex ) needs as well as Operating costs ( Opex)  needs. These trends together put a lot of pressure on data center IT organizations , leaving them frustrated trying to figure a way out.

Fortunately, there is a way out: Many studies have shown the storage utilization rate is very low, averaging about 40% (“The Future of Storage Management”, Gartner February 2010). Surveys indicate that 86% of customers who already have thin capable hardware are not leveraging this capability (source: Symantec Operations Readiness Tools website at...

Announcing three beta add-ons for Veritas Operations Manager (VOM). These add-ons can make VOM more powerful and better aligned to your needs:

  • Scripting - allows administrators to store their scripts on the Operations Manager central management server, execute them on selected hosts or on a Business Entity, and monitor the script output status.
  • Veritas Cluster Server (VCS) password management - allows administrators to modify non-secure clusters user's authentication password
  • Package anomaly - compares a set of servers against a set of packages in an attempt to find systems that are non-standard or have installations different than other similar or related systems in the data center

Data Insight Technology Overview

The management of unstructured data is a very large problem. We’ve learned through customer conversations and surveys that in many organizations, unstructured data – files like documents, email, reports, letters, research notes, IP, presentations – represents up to 80% of an organization’s data.  This file data can spread among many systems and departments and migrate among systems as the storage infrastructure has grown. As a result of the data migrations or data center consolidation projects, many of the files are labeled as being owned by “Administrators” which makes it difficult for IT to centrally establish who in the enterprise actually owns the data.

Identifying data owners is critical for a number of IT initiatives and lack of data owner identification is a barrier to large-scale remediation and business process. Symantec Data Insight monitors file usage and derives...

Late last year, we changed the name of Veritas Operations Services (VOS) to Symantec Operations Readiness Tools (SORT) [http://sort.symantec.com]  and we enhanced the site to help new users understand more about the available features.

As you’ve likely seen, the main SORT webpage is geared toward educating new users about SORT features and functions.

For previous VOS users, we suggest going directly to the MySORT page (http://mysort.symantec.com).  MySORT is the old VOS home page with a few minor changes.  You’ll see a color template difference but the old VOS functionality is still there including enhancements based on previously received feedback.

If you just want to use the tools and services, go to the MySORT page and get started (http://mysort.symantec.com).  You can generate reports for...
