While waiting for the support of Symantec applications with the new Solaris 11, I'm bringing an overview of the new operating system.

Oracle Solaris 11 Express, from here you can download, you have the possibility to download a pendirve, as well as the possibility of using a live cd, two features that this new version incorporates the operating system for SPARC-solaris, here are some of the advantages we can get:
A faster start, the people of Sun Oracle came working hard in the matter, wanted to run a startup type as the x86 and x86 machines, this towards standardizing them.
IPS to upgrade, installation, removal of packages is similar to opensolaris faster than previous versions and this is one of the operating system's disadvantage, as in previous versions, the update manager was rarely used because it is not so friendly.
SMF (Service Managment Facility) SNMPy incliyo of traps for smf integration with IPS,...

Starting with the April 2009 issue, we began publishing each issue of CIO Digest to the Amazon Kindle. Readers want to consume content in a variety of different formats, and the increasingly popularity of the Amazon Kindle prompted us to begin making each issue available on it.

The July issue has some really interesting articles, including an exclusive interview with Steve Vollmer, the VP of IT and CTO at Las Vegas Sand Corporation, features on ways to optimize storage investments and strategies on weathering the 2009 economic climate, and much more. Click here to access...

Thought these were fun.  Yes they are propaganda but it's a good way to describe to a non-IT person what Symantec (or you) do with infrastructure software.

Imagine a storage strategy that could make storing data more flexible and efficient while reducing storage costs. With an increasing amount of data to manage, accommodating growth and controlling costs becomes virtually impossible without the knowledge of a trusted partner and a powerful set of tools. Randy Cochran, vice president of NAM channel sales provides four innovative technology practices that will drive immediate return on existing investments or ROY (return on yesterday):

1. Identifying unused capacity to improve storage utilization, decrease power and cooling costs, and reduce floor space and maintenance.

2. Using thin provisioning to reduce storage set aside for applications by allocating storage as needed and discovering what data the server and applications are actually using.

3. Avoiding redundant data with data deduplication, a technology that divides individual chunks of data into smaller segments that can be placed in available disk space....

Symantec’s Healthcare Industry Solutions group recently hosted a roundtable on the storage drain EMRs and other medical images place on the IT infrastructure. It was a great discussion that included Gary Sevounts and Phil Goodwin of Symantec, Rob Horst and Matt Giblin of Mercy Health and myself as moderator.

We discussed the following topics: storage management, storage virtualization and the challenges hospitals and other medical facilities can overcome by implementing the right solutions that fit the needs of your healthcare organization.

I have included a podcast link to the full roundtable discussion here:

As a quick introduction, I am a product manager within the Symantec Information Management Group - specifically responsible for the File System Archiving component of Enterprise Vault.

We are always looking for input from our customers as to what they would like to see us developing next. One area that we've talked about internally for a while is that of Unix Archiving. By Unix Archiving I mean archiving content out of the Unix platform rather than an archiving application running on Unix. We would like to know whether you have demand for such an applicaton and if you do, what are the key features you would be looking for. If you are operating a unix environment, but not necessarily requiring Unix Archiving today, we would still like to hear from you to obtain environmental information.

To help us gather this information, we are conducting a short survey which should take 15-20 minutes to complete. If you do have an interest in this topic, we would very...

 Medicine for “TB”:

I bought a setup where 1000 and 1000 GB’s of data stored in a storage box. Users frequently access this box to store their project related data’s. We had an audit before 2 weeks and when we check for the space usage, we found 50 % of space is occupied by the SQL DB’s that are copied to this box in daily manner. I have informed DB Administrators regarding this issue and they explained me the clear setup.

Our corporation System uses MS SQL as database engine. As servers don’t have much space to store DB backups(to store one more backup copies), SQL maintenance plan is scheduled to run in mid night to backup the db’s to storage box and VERITAS backup is scheduled to run in the morning to backup the DB backup files from Storage box. DB backup files will be backed up to tapes and tapes will be sending to offshore locations in weekly manner. Suddenly I got a question -“What about the DB files that were...
