O mundo do FSS

VVR 6.1 introduces two new performance features:

  • Storage Replicator Log (SRL) Batching to improve application throughput
  • Bulk Transfer to improve replication throughput

Note: Both of these features are enabled by default in standalone VVR.

SRL Batching combines multi-threaded application writes to the same replicated data set as a single write to the SRL. Batching reduces the number of IOPS to the SRL thereby resulting in faster write access times and improves application performance. Moreover, this also translates into lower CPU utilization by VVR. In order to be effective, the batching algorithm accumulates multiple parallel SRL IOs before they are written to SRL in a batch.

Bulk Transfer replicates multiple I/Os in 256KB chunks when memory buffers are flushed to the SRL, increasing replication throughput and...

According to Forbes, 70% of organizations that were in the Fortune 1,000 ten years ago have vanished.  The natural question is why did this happen?  The simple answer is business agility.  These organizations were not able to adjust to changes in the business environment and were eventually crushed by their competitors or by changing trends in the market.

Look at Blockbuster for example.  In 1992, Blockbuster was the largest video rental leader with over 2,800 stores worldwide and by its peak in the early 2000s, Blockbuster grew to over 10,000 stores across the globe.  Then the business environment changed.   In 1997, a startup called Netflix was launched with a completely different business model.  Instead of opening brick and mortar stores that people could rent videos from, Netflix mailed DVDs...

Business Challenges

Businesses and organizations of all sizes have adopted virtualization as a core technology within their data centers. Both new and legacy applications are moving to virtualization because it reduces cost, improves hardware utilization and simplifies management. Originally, proprietary virtualization platforms were the dominant forces in the industry. Lately, customers have realized that open virtualization platforms provide higher performance, better functionality and are more cost effective.

The rapid adoption of virtualization has driven demand for support of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) functionality. Businesses rely on an "always on" IT infrastructure in order to provide competitive advantage and create unique customer values. Applications built on virtualized environments must deliver appropriate levels of availability with minimal or no downtime.
