Watch this behind to scenes to see how Symantec put our high availability and disaster recovery technology to the ultimate test. We loaded a server rack with a multi-tier application stack including an Oracle database on Solaris and the application layer on Red Hat Enterprise Linux as primary data center. A disaster recovery site was set up on a second rack, our failover data center. The applications were clustered using Veritas Cluster Server. Veritas Replicator was set up to do data replication between the sites. And then the fun started, as we took our two "data centers" 18 stories up on a building in the heart of Silicon Valley and we dropped the primary rack off the roof. See how it seamlessly failed over to a recovery site.

Virtualization is the current buzz word, and IT organizations are adopting virtualization technologies and platforms at an ever-increasing rate. But virtualization has many risks that need to be addressed. These include how organizations monitor and protect applications, data and business services in the event of a failure.

To address this, Symantec today is announcing the latest version of Veritas Cluster Server. This new version of Veritas Cluster Server introduces capabilities for high availability and disaster recovery that IT organizations require for their virtual environment. The new solution will provide automatic application failover between virtual machines ensuring fast recovery in response to a wide range of failures including logical failures (for example operating system corruption) that render a virtual machine unusable.

I had the pleasure of attending VMworld 2012 this week and had every intention of blogging daily from the venue. Suffice it to say that between working in the booth a few hours each day and meetings on the side with Symantec customers and partners, that just didn't happen. On the other hand, I did manage to spot Brent Spiner (Data from the Star Trek: The Next Generation series) at the event.
 
As I said, I spent several hours each day in the Symantec booth talking with customers (current and future!) about our new release of Veritas Cluster Server due out this Fall. This release is pretty exciting in that it has enhancements allowing users to install VCS on Windows and Linux VMware guests, providing application failover between virtual machines. This gives customers another level of protection beyond what our ApplicationHA product delivers so our customers can now select the appropriate level of availability based on service...

Virtualization is everywhere, but IT organizations are still looking for ways to cut costs.  One way to do that, is to…  virtualize even more applications!  However, the easy stuff has been done.  File and print servers, cafeteria menus and the company picnic blog have been virtualized.  The next step is to move up the chain and virtualize business and mission critical applications.  But the risks of virtualization are still there.  How do I monitor and protect my application and business services in the event of a failure, or even a site wide disaster?  What happens to the performance or availability of my data when a path connecting a virtual machine to the storage fails?  These are the roadblocks that are preventing IT organizations from virtualizing more of their business critical services and applications.  The good news is Symantec can help!

Disasters happen.  In fact, according to the Munchener Ruckversicherungs-Gesellschaft, Geo Risks Research, 355 events, from floods to tornados to tsunamis and earthquakes occurred in 2011.  IT organizations need protection from such horrific events, but also those that are more common place, for instance power outages and equipment failures.  

Here are a few interesting statistics from the latest Symantec State of the Data Center report (available later this year):

  • 70% of organizations experience downtime from power failure (11.3 hours per outage)
  • 63% experience cyber attacks (52.7 hours per outage)
  • 26% conducted a power outage and failure impact assessment
  • Median downtime per outage in the last 12 months was 5 hours
  • Organizations experienced an average of 4 downtime incidents in the past 12 months

Last week, Symantec and Microsoft announced a joint effort to deliver Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS). This hybrid approach will involve using Symantec Storage Foundation HA for Windows on the customer premises to provide data replication and failover management to Microsoft's Azure cloud services. This is a pretty big deal.

While our largest customers have the luxury of multiple data centers spread across a large area, most companies don't. With multiple data centers, a company can provision additional capacity in each one to host another data center's critical applications in the event of a site failure. But in the absence of additional real estate, a company's options for disaster recovery are more limited. And this is where DRaaS comes into play.
