Things just aren't as simple as they used to be. There was a time when we could achieve nearly all of our uptime goals just by clustering our backend database servers and maybe a handful of other application servers. There was very little of that weird virtualization voodoo going on, and all our important
applications ran on physical servers.

Well, times have changed. Not only are a larger share of our applications considered mission critical, but our service level agreement expectations are much higher and we're under pressure to virtualize more applications in order to realize greater cost savings in the data center. To further complicate things, those applications have grown more complex with more moving parts. For those of us concerned with high availability and disaster recovery, this has presented some interesting challenges.

Consider, for example, an online...

It’s that time of year again; my car needs a service to ready it for the coming winter. It’s only August and around 25°C here in the UK.  It’s amazing how quick the weather turns these days; on comes the wind and the rain and before you know it there are signs for Halloween and Christmas in the shops.  So upon the topic of servicing the car,  I mentioned in passing this morning to my partner that I should book the car in for its service and her response was “Can’t you do that yourself and save some money?”. Of course I probably could. Thinking about it for that moment, but it’s much easier for someone who knows what they are doing to do this for me. I may of course save some money if I did it myself, but saving money doesn’t always mean saving me time. Also I’m sure she was thinking of spending the savings on a pair of shoes or something else and that’s one battle I would lose.

Let’s think...

Recently, the Taneja Group, a well respected firm that provides analysis and consulting for the storage industry, storage-related aspects of the server industry, and eDiscovery, released its review of ApplicationHA.  Its experts point out that “Symantec ApplicationHA is to virtual environments, what Veritas Cluster Server (part of Storage Foundation HA) was to physical environments – a true multi-platform, multi-application aware clustering and high availability platform”.  I have attached the full article below.

Congratulations..You have gone through all the work of setting up a foolproof virtualized data center and are considering spending all your days tanning on a sunny beach.  Why not?  Your VMware environment is providing you with high availability at the hypervisor and virtual machine stage, and you might as well start ordering Margaritas..Not so fast - Do you know what your applications are doing?  Not really because VMware does not provide you with the status of what is going on with the applications that are running in your virtual machines.  So fully protect yourself with ApplicationHA, the only industry solution that provides you with visibility and control of applications running inside virtual machines from the vCenter console.

The latest ApplicationHA release provides application awareness in VMware Site...

Cloud: Evolutionary or Revolutionary ?

For many the cloud has been a marketing term with no real products and just a lot of vaporware. But the cloud is finally becoming real and cloud discussions are becoming more mature. On the Gartner hype cycle the cloud is beginning to emerge from the `peak of inflated expectations` and heading to the `trough of disillusionment`  (find more information at: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/gartner_hype_cycle_2010_cloud_computing_at_the_pea.php ). With this maturity have come some real questions, Is the cloud an evolutionary or revolutionary step? Does the cloud mean 'net new' or is it just another step in the evolution of the data center?

Tell us more about your journey to the cloud, share with us how you are implementing your cloud, are you taking evolutionary or...

For some organizations, the idea of virtualizing their mission critical applications is perceived to be more riskier and its advantages are not yet compelling to make the switch.  In fact, according to Symantec's latest Virtualization and Evolution to the Cloud Survey, 40% of CEOs and 42% of CFOs are reluctant to make the leap to virtualization.  Some of the cited reservations are around downtime and the lack of visibility into virtualized environments.  However, IT users can get around these challenges by making sure that they deploy virtualization tools that are suited for their particular needs. A foolproof virtualization plan can deliver cost savings, efficiency, increased productivity, high availability, disaster recovery, etc.  Recently, Dan Lamorena, Product Marketing Director within Symantec's Storage and Availability Management Group authored an article in the ...

Today Symantec announced the latest release of ApplicationHA, a new solution that provides high availability for business critical applications through application-level visibility, control and recovery in VMware environments. We’re particularly excited about this new release as it addresses some key concerns shared by data center administrators as they virtualize their infrastructures.

Administrators are cautious with virtualizing their applications as their criticality grows. Symantec’s recent Virtualization and Evolution to the Cloud Survey concluded that in spite of executives’ concerns, more than 59 percent plan to virtualize database applications in the next 12 months. We see that tier 3 applications are virtualized more than tier 2 and tier 2 more than tier 1. There...

Is the approach to the cloud similar to a new car purchase ? Dave Elliott, Symantec Product Marketing Manager argues that it is indeed similar, in his blog on SOAworld magazine.

The crux of the argument is that you really need to have thought about what you are getting from the cloud, what will work for your needs as well as what is expected of it and then making sure that you are indeed making sure that it delivers.

For instance, for some smaller businesses it makes sense to use the public cloud but for many others, private cloud is the only way to go. Some enterprises have confidential data which needs to be very secure, others have requirements that mean they need control over the data. One has to consider the privacy, security and control they needs before they decide on how to approach the cloud.

In regards to car safety requirements, enterprises have similar needs for their data. Most enterprises cannot afford to lose their data or have their site...
