Is the approach to the cloud similar to a new car purchase ? Dave Elliott, Symantec Product Marketing Manager argues that it is indeed similar, in his blog on SOAworld magazine.

The crux of the argument is that you really need to have thought about what you are getting from the cloud, what will work for your needs as well as what is expected of it and then making sure that you are indeed making sure that it delivers.

For instance, for some smaller businesses it makes sense to use the public cloud but for many others, private cloud is the only way to go. Some enterprises have confidential data which needs to be very secure, others have requirements that mean they need control over the data. One has to consider the privacy, security and control they needs before they decide on how to approach the cloud.

In regards to car safety requirements, enterprises have similar needs for their data. Most enterprises cannot afford to lose their data or have their site...

Most experts agree that moving to the cloud provides organizations with cost savings, flexibility and other efficiencies.  At the same time, CEOs and CFOs are showing concerns with moving business-critical applications to the cloud fearing complications including reliability, security, availability and performance.  Symantec recently commissioned  a survey to examine how organizations plan to use virtualization and private and hybrid clouds in their computing environments amid these conflicting views. The 2011 Virtualization and Evolution to the Cloud survey is based on more than 3,700 respondents from 35 countries worldwide.

Our intentions were to observe how organizations plan to use or are already using virtualization and cloud. The survey looked at several aspects including server, client and storage virtualization, storage-as-a-service, and hybrid/private cloud technologies. We also aimed to uncover disparities between expectations and reality of the...

Data centers the world over are struggling to address many challenges today. These challenges center on keeping costs down, reduced resources whether it be capital or people resources, increasing storage costs and demanding SLAs. For many data centers the answer is to move to a private cloud or a private cloud like model.

We at Symantec have been talking to you, our customers and have been trying to understand and address some of the challenges in implementing a private cloud. These challenges can be broadly categorized into servers, storage and cloud management. On the server side availability for business services in a heterogeneous environment is an issue, one that could potentially be very expensive. On the storage side there is a need for a 'Storage as a Service' model that works across heterogeneous storage. Finally, we need a way to tie it all together and manage it such that you have visibility in a single pane.

In this white paper, Symantec, Storage...

New Release: Introducing Symantec ApplicationHA

We are very excited to announce that Symantec ApplicationHA is now available.  ApplicationHA leverages more than 12 years of development of Veritas Cluster Server to provide an application-monitoring package that runs inside a VMware guest operating system and fully integrates with VMware HA to provide virtual machine restart as needed to react to any application issues.

Combined together, this solution:

  • Enhances the availability of business-critical applications by providing a mechanism to detect and recover from application failures in VMware environments
  • Improves the manageability of virtualized applications by providing visibility of the application’s status and application control (that is, starting or stopping the application) through a single pane of glass — VMware vSphere Client, the user...

To maximize efficiency of current IT resources, organizations are virtualizing an increasing number of applications in the data center.  There are many benefits from virtualization such as cost savings for power, cooling and space.  However, not all IT organizations are comfortable with the risk involved when virtualizing business critical applications.  There are several reasons for this.  For example with basic VMware HA, customers do not have visibility into application availability and often issues must be resolved manually after being reported by people using the services that application provides. Current solutions around this either degrade performance or eliminate VMware functionality like vMotion and DRS, resulting in most customers not virtualizing their business critical applications.  Symantec is now announcing ApplicationHA.

To solve the virtualization challenges, Symantec ApplicationHA leverages VMware HA’s app-awareness API to...
