Today, Symantec released Veritas Operations Manager (VOM) 6.0, which brings the organization a step closer in delivering on the vision of providing complete end-to-end business continuity across the data center.

Overview

Veritas Operations Manager is a centralized operationally focused tool that enhances the management of Storage Foundation, Dynamic Multi-Pathing, Cluster Server, and ApplicationHA across different application, server, virtualization, and storage platforms. In addition to providing a complete centralized management interface for those environments, VOM discovers a wealth of detail about the adjacent configuration, including visibility into storage array configuration, the SAN connectivity and fabrics, multi-vendor virtualization and server platforms, and applications, such as MS SQL Server and Oracle Databases.

By having a wide perspective on the configuration, VOM enables customers to:

  • Minimize risk by allowing...

Introducing Veritas Operations Manager 5.0 and Veritas Operations Manager Advanced 5.0

Over the past year, many technology conferences discussed about explosive data growth. If you attended some, you’ve probably seen the quote that “the growth of data is 40% to 60% over the next two years1” multiple times up on the big screen. True enough, this problem warrants a storage solution that can keep up with data growth while minimizing the risk of unexpected errors or downtime and managing diversity in the data center.

Every IT vendor is trying to tackle this problem and the other challenges that come into play in storage and availability management:

  • Increased expectations to be up and running 24x7
  • Complexity and diversity with array vendors, applications and platforms
  • Low storage utilization rate
  • Introduction of new technologies

Let’s take the example of new technologies, such as...

Consider the following situations:

  • Ever had the problem where you are running blind on your storage utilization? The application owner asks for more storage every month and you wonder how he is utilizing the  storage you allocated last month.
  • Ever had your CIO ask you tough questions, “What is our global storage capacity and utilization?” And you wish you had the latest consolidated report emailed to you the previous night. Or even better a live dashboard.
  • Ever wished you knew how well aligned are the strategic applications to the underlying storage? You have no idea if your mission critical application is using tier-3 or tier-1 storage without several disparate checkpoints.
  • It’s about time somebody stopped telling you how bad your storage utilization is and actually gave you an easy way to remediate this problem without any application downtime.

Is the approach to the cloud similar to a new car purchase ? Dave Elliott, Symantec Product Marketing Manager argues that it is indeed similar, in his blog on SOAworld magazine.

The crux of the argument is that you really need to have thought about what you are getting from the cloud, what will work for your needs as well as what is expected of it and then making sure that you are indeed making sure that it delivers.

For instance, for some smaller businesses it makes sense to use the public cloud but for many others, private cloud is the only way to go. Some enterprises have confidential data which needs to be very secure, others have requirements that mean they need control over the data. One has to consider the privacy, security and control they needs before they decide on how to approach the cloud.

In regards to car safety requirements, enterprises have similar needs for their data. Most enterprises cannot afford to lose their data or have their site...

Data centers the world over are struggling to address many challenges today. These challenges center on keeping costs down, reduced resources whether it be capital or people resources, increasing storage costs and demanding SLAs. For many data centers the answer is to move to a private cloud or a private cloud like model.

We at Symantec have been talking to you, our customers and have been trying to understand and address some of the challenges in implementing a private cloud. These challenges can be broadly categorized into servers, storage and cloud management. On the server side availability for business services in a heterogeneous environment is an issue, one that could potentially be very expensive. On the storage side there is a need for a 'Storage as a Service' model that works across heterogeneous storage. Finally, we need a way to tie it all together and manage it such that you have visibility in a single pane.

In this white paper, Symantec, Storage...

This week Symantec is announcing Veritas Operations Manager 4.0 and Veritas Operations Manager Advanced. We’re really excited on the Storage and Availability Management team to deliver these new solutions that we believe address some of the key painpoints our customers are facing as they implement virtualization and cloud computing. In reality, these are the same challenges data center managers have been facing for years. What we want to do is help them deliver high service level times, prevent downtime so their businesses can be up and running and then ensure they’re operating with the highest levels of efficiency.

When you introduce new technology like virtualization or thin provisioning there’s always risk; and we want to help you get visibility and minimize that risk so these critical applications can remain online and perform their required functions. As you move to the private cloud there’s also the need to automate. IT has to deliver services...

Announcing three beta add-ons for Veritas Operations Manager (VOM). These add-ons can make VOM more powerful and better aligned to your needs:

  • Scripting - allows administrators to store their scripts on the Operations Manager central management server, execute them on selected hosts or on a Business Entity, and monitor the script output status.
  • Veritas Cluster Server (VCS) password management - allows administrators to modify non-secure clusters user's authentication password
  • Package anomaly - compares a set of servers against a set of packages in an attempt to find systems that are non-standard or have installations different than other similar or related systems in the data center
