Reducing hardware footprint and unifying management in datacenters has never been easier with VMware offering tremendous benefits in deploying reliable and highly available desktops and applications with its VDI technology. But while this brings reduced operating and support costs, the growing number of VMDKs puts a strain on storage infrastructures. An otherwise efficient VMware VDI environment can face multiple challenges such as insufficient scalability, rising costs associated with deploying inefficient scalable storage and reduced performance due to boot storms. Organizations deploying VMware VDI environments need to make sure that the storage they are tying in is optimized for their VDI environment.

Symantec FileStore, a VMware-certified clustered NAS appliance offers the following advantages to address storage and performance challenges in large VMware VDI environment deployments:

  • Integration...

Data center leaders are constantly being bombarded with marketing blitz on how they can reach the clouds by buying new infrastructure, but the reality is closer to ground. At Symantec we believe that the private cloud is more of a transformation of your existing data center rather than a rip and replace.

Read confident insights article on how to get to private cloud:

Maintaining performance and scalability of storage systems while controlling associated costs are key challenges businesses face due to explosive growth of unstructured data especially in virtualization, cloud and archiving infrastructures.

Symantec FileStore N8300TM,the latest version of Symantec’s clustered, Network Attached Storage appliance is designed to help customers address business challenges associated with building virtual environments and cloud storage, and managing large volumes of data while controlling associated storage costs. With linear performance and scalability, FileStore N8300 is positioned to address even the most demanding file serving and emerging web-based services. It can be configured to survive multiple node failures, ensuring the high availability of data and continued uptime of data operations with redistribution of workloads across clusters. FileStore N8300 is modularly scalable and can scale up to 16 active-active nodes, up...

Symantec today announced a major refresh to its Storage and Availability Management portfolio to help customers build the private cloud they want by transforming their existing infrastructure. Symantec’s high availability solutions will enable users to architect resilient private clouds with fast local or global recovery of complete business services and data replication across any distance to meet their recovery time/point objectives. Symantec can orchestrate the recovery of a business service, even if its components (various databases, application servers, and web servers) run on different operating systems or virtualization technologies.

As more IT organizations move to the cloud, Symantec’s new storage management offerings will also help IT organizations manage and deliver elastic, resilient storage for cloud workloads by providing the ability to scale storage capacity up or down while applications remain online and reducing the storage footprint...

Many IT organizations within enterprises are struggling with the explosive growth of unstructured data. In addition, they are being asked to retain the data for a specific period of time due to regulatory requirements. Enterprises must archive their data to a storage location where it will remain unaltered, can be retained for the appropriate amount of time and can be retrieved quickly to address eDiscovery requirements. Many are turning to Symantec Enterprise Vault™, the industry’s leading information archiving platform , to address these challenges and take control of unstructured data. Interestingly, there isn’t a storage platform in the market place that offers an integrated approach to deliver simple management, modularly scalability and cost effectiveness with Enterprise Vault.

Symantec FileStore N8300 is fully integrated and certified with Enterprise Vault to provide a linearly scalable, highly reliable and cost effective storage solution for storing...

For some organizations, the idea of virtualizing their mission critical applications is perceived to be more riskier and its advantages are not yet compelling to make the switch.  In fact, according to Symantec's latest Virtualization and Evolution to the Cloud Survey, 40% of CEOs and 42% of CFOs are reluctant to make the leap to virtualization.  Some of the cited reservations are around downtime and the lack of visibility into virtualized environments.  However, IT users can get around these challenges by making sure that they deploy virtualization tools that are suited for their particular needs. A foolproof virtualization plan can deliver cost savings, efficiency, increased productivity, high availability, disaster recovery, etc.  Recently, Dan Lamorena, Product Marketing Director within Symantec's Storage and Availability Management Group authored an article in the Virtualization...

Here's an interesting architecture around the emerging trends around storage and specifically around scale-out NAS solutions. This article does a good job explaining the needs for scale-out NAS solutions and their evolution into cloud based solutions.

The article mentions some potential solutions that include Symantec's FileStore product. FileStore is one of the fastest performing scale-out NAS solutions in the market. While VirtualStore is not mentioned in this article it is a completely software solution that can be used to gain the same benefits mentioned in the article while using existing storage hardware.

Last week, Symantec reclaimed its #1 spot on SPECsfs2008benchmark with 636k iops for NFSand 712k iops for CIFSwith its FileStore N8x00 clustered NAS systems, breaking the previous record of 497k iops for NFS and 661k for CIFS.

These new numbers have shown that astonishing results are ultimately driven by optimization in the file system software. It also highlights that to achieve a high performing solution, throwing expensive hardware isn’t always the way to go.  Looking at the results from the software side – taking the Infiniband, SSD’s and other high priced items out of the equation – Symantec’s  solution can give a much more scalable solution based upon cheap commodity hardware, and without any flash drive or LUN level tuning. The...
