This week Symantec is announcing Veritas Operations Manager 4.0 and Veritas Operations Manager Advanced. We’re really excited on the Storage and Availability Management team to deliver these new solutions that we believe address some of the key painpoints our customers are facing as they implement virtualization and cloud computing. In reality, these are the same challenges data center managers have been facing for years. What we want to do is help them deliver high service level times, prevent downtime so their businesses can be up and running and then ensure they’re operating with the highest levels of efficiency.

Data Insight Technology Overview

The management of unstructured data is a very large problem. We’ve learned through customer conversations and surveys that in many organizations, unstructured data – files like documents, email, reports, letters, research notes, IP, presentations – represents up to 80% of an organization’s data.  This file data can spread among many systems and departments and migrate among systems as the storage infrastructure has grown. As a result of the data migrations or data center consolidation projects, many of the files are labeled as being owned by “Administrators” which makes it difficult for IT to centrally establish who in the enterprise actually owns the data.

Service Pack 1 for Veritas Storage Foundation & High Availability Solutions 5.1 for Windows provides new and updated application and operating system support. This service pack provides support for Microsoft Windows server 2008 R2, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 Hyper-V, and Microsoft Windows 7 (client support) as well as Microsoft Exchange 2007 SP2, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP1, Microsoft SharePoint 2007, Symantec Enterprise Vault 8, and many other updates.

Veritas Storage Foundation and Veritas Cluster Server 5.1 are now available to customers. Below are a few key areas of innovation that you can expect in version 5.1:

  1. Zero reboot install and zero reboot upgrade to version 5.1:
    • Rolling upgrades for Storage Foundation, Cluster File System, Veritas Cluster Server and Storage Foundation for RAC clusters
    • Smaller host footprint with a 70% reduction in the number of packages for the full distribution

What's New?

Storage Foundation Manager 2.1 is a cross platform release, and includes updates to the Central Server on Linux, Solaris and Windows, as well as updates to Managed Hosts on all platforms. The 2.1 release includes the following new features:

Symantec recently announced the release of Veritas Storage Foundation for Sybase ASE CE 5.0. Sybase ASE Cluster Edition (ASE CE) uses a shared-disk architecture designed to support up to 32 ASE server instances that simultaneously access a SAN.

Based on core Veritas technology, which has 15+ years of customer successes and hundreds of production customers in Sybase environments, Veritas Storage Foundation for Sybase ASE CE combines the strengths of Sybase ASE CE with the robust storage management and high availability capabilities of Storage Foundation and Veritas Cluster Server to implement robust, manageable, and scalable Sybase shared disk clusters. The integrated solution uses the same infrastructure software across an enterprise data center and enables shared cluster management with Sybase for database and application, offering benefits in the areas of Storage Management, High Availability and High Performance.
