The sixth annual Symantec Disaster Recovery Study demonstrates the challenges that data center managers have in managing disparate virtual, physical and cloud resources. These ever-changing resources add complexity for organizations protecting and recovering mission-critical applications and data. In fact, the data found virtual machines are not properly protected due to resource and other storage constraints that hamper backups.

Check out the 2010 Symantec Disaster Recovery Study.

We had asked community members to submit their scripts as an example of what can be done for custom agents and other utilities.  We received a tremendous response and a great variety of custom utilities.  We had useful scripts that provided a view into the amount of space within a Disk Group another that would check the uptime of the cluster and a third that extended a windows application agent with a framework to enable additional functionality.  It was very difficult to choose the winner with such fine contributions.

After much deliberation the winner is Custom Script: VCS uptime script by Seann Herdejurgen.  The ability to determine the uptime of an application is critical to every business.  This script enable customers to determine this information from a script....

Facing challenges around storage utilization and performance in virtual infrastructures? Increase in storage consumption could have a dramatic impact on your IT budget. Deploying virtual machines is not as efficient when deploying thousands. And from your end-user’s perspective, when a large number of users log into their desktops simultaneously, performance can suffer dramatically.

Symantec VirtualStore helps you fully benefit from your virtualization investments by addressing virtualization’s storage challenges. Based on Veritas Cluster File System technology, VirtualStore is built for VMware virtual machine management in the form of a highly scalable, clustered NAS solution. It allows for rapid provisioning of servers and virtual machines, and efficient, space-optimized cloning and boot-up of virtual machines, all through VMware’s management console, vCenter. It allows you to:

  • Reduce virtual desktop cost by as much as 50% as compared to...

New Intelligent Monitoring Framework in Storage Foundation HA 5.1 SP1 Introduces Proactive Detection of Failed Processes for Faster Recoveries

By Jerome M. Wendt

Downtime is rarely an option for mission critical applications and while many strides have been made over the last decade to ensure uninterrupted application availability, some gaps in providing protection still remain. One of these is reducing the time it takes to detect when a failure has occurred so a recovery on a secondary server can be promptly initiated and successfully completed. It is expediting these server recoveries that the new Intelligent Monitoring Framework introduced in Storage Foundation HA 5.1 Service Pack 1 (SP1) accomplishes.

Many organizations are more than happy with the speed of failover on the clustering solution that they use to support mission critical applications as these clustering...

We’ve released a next generation version of Veritas Operations Services (VOS) called Symantec Operations Readiness Tools (SORT).

SORT contains all previously available features and functionality that came with VOS but it now includes a new interface, new name, and additional functionality to help you and your customers work smarter, not harder.   (Note: all previously bookmarked or memorized VOS urls will automatically map to the appropriate SORT urls)

What’s new in SORT (http://sort.symantec.com):

  • A new landing page to educate and train visitors about SORT, it’s value, and available functionality
  • A new functional user interface (via http://mysort.symantec.com) that reduces the number of click needed to use key features in the dashboard widgets (My SORT is an updated version of the VOS widget dashboard)
  • Enhanced Windows detailed...

New Release: Introducing Symantec ApplicationHA

We are very excited to announce that Symantec ApplicationHA is now available.  ApplicationHA leverages more than 12 years of development of Veritas Cluster Server to provide an application-monitoring package that runs inside a VMware guest operating system and fully integrates with VMware HA to provide virtual machine restart as needed to react to any application issues.

Combined together, this solution:

  • Enhances the availability of business-critical applications by providing a mechanism to detect and recover from application failures in VMware environments
  • Improves the manageability of virtualized applications by providing visibility of the application’s status and application control (that is, starting or stopping the application) through a single pane of glass — VMware vSphere Client, the user...

Blogger Jerome Wendt recently posted an entry about Veritas Dynamic Multi-Pathing (DMP) on his site.  You can read what he has to say about DMP and the fact that it is now available as a standalone product.  Check out his entry at:

http://symantec.dciginc.com/2010/08/symantecs-dmp-no-strings-attached.html

Now DMP is available as a standalone product to support file systems other than VxFS.  It is available now on Solaris, AIX, and Linux.  Coming in November, DMP as a standalone product will be available on HP-UX and Windows.  DMP is still included with Storage Foundation and will be in the future.  The advantage with DMP as a separate product is that now DMP can be added to an existing server without having to convert any file systems to VxFS.

Veritas Storage Foundation 5.1 introduced some nice changes into the vxassist utility to support rudimentary allocation templates and volume attribute persistence.  Support for these will allow environments running SF to start regularizing some of their operations related to volume-level provisioning.  For example, you can standardize layouts of volumes created to support production databases versus development, or you can enable or disable stretch clustering based on some volume type name which could be centered on the name of an application that the volume might be created for.

These new changes are in stark contrast to the much more sophisticated ISP (Intelligent Storage Provisioning) template language that was added in 4.0 but that was dropped in 5.1.  ISP was a large scale structural change that in the end just proved too complex.  Instead, the new changes simply extend traditional vxassist functionality and syntax with rule files and the ability to...

  2. Put 'Custom Agent/Script' in your title.
  3. That's it, you're automatically entered in the contest AND you've just earned an additional 50 Connect points for your submission!

To win:
You and your peers now have the opportunity to vote on the best entry. The iPad winner will be selected based on popular votes as well as a review by Symantec product teams. Entries must be uploaded by...
