Most experts agree that moving to the cloud provides organizations with cost savings, flexibility and other efficiencies.  At the same time, CEOs and CFOs are showing concerns with moving business-critical applications to the cloud fearing complications including reliability, security, availability and performance.  Symantec recently commissioned  a survey to examine how organizations plan to use virtualization and private and hybrid clouds in their computing environments amid these conflicting views. The 2011 Virtualization and Evolution to the Cloud survey is based on more than 3,700 respondents from 35 countries worldwide.

Our intentions were to observe how organizations plan to use or are already using virtualization and cloud. The survey looked at several aspects including server, client and storage virtualization, storage-as-a-service, and hybrid/private cloud technologies. We also aimed to uncover disparities between expectations and reality of the...

Hi everyone and thanks for joining the SFHA 6.0 Beta Group.

We are currently working on our SFHA 6.0 release on UNIX, Linux and Windows.  I wanted to write a quick introduction on the purpose of this group, how it will be organized and what we are hoping to get from you.

To begin with, this group was formed to provide a look at the features to be delivered in the next release of Storage Foundation and High Availability products which are due out in Q4 of Calender 2011.  We created several videos around the newest features to gain feedback from you.  With each video, we are interested in what you think about the feature, if it will enable your use case and answer some questions around the feature.  This info will be shared between Product Management and Engineering to demonstrate how customers are using our products.

The topics to be shown include, but are not limited to:

Storage Foundation 6.0:

Data centers the world over are struggling to address many challenges today. These challenges center on keeping costs down, reduced resources whether it be capital or people resources, increasing storage costs and demanding SLAs. For many data centers the answer is to move to a private cloud or a private cloud like model.

We at Symantec have been talking to you, our customers and have been trying to understand and address some of the challenges in implementing a private cloud. These challenges can be broadly categorized into servers, storage and cloud management. On the server side availability for business services in a heterogeneous environment is an issue, one that could potentially be very expensive. On the storage side there is a need for a 'Storage as a Service' model that works across heterogeneous storage. Finally, we need a way to tie it all together and manage it such that you have visibility in a single pane.

In this white paper, Symantec, Storage...

New white paper on Veritas Cluster Server I/O Fencing!

Here is the Executive Summary:

I/O Fencing provides protection against data corruption and can guarantee data consistency in a clustered environment. Data is the most valuable component in today’s enterprises. Having data protected and therefore consistent at all times is a number one priority.

This White Paper describes the different deployment methods and strategies available for I/O Fencing. It is designed to illustrate configuration options and provide examples where they are appropriate.

Symantec has led the way in solving the potential data corruption issues that are associated with clusters. We have developed and adopted industry standards (SCSI-3 Persistent Group Reservations [PGR]) that leverage modern disk-array controllers that integrate tightly into the overall cluster communications framework.

This week Symantec is announcing Veritas Operations Manager 4.0 and Veritas Operations Manager Advanced. We’re really excited on the Storage and Availability Management team to deliver these new solutions that we believe address some of the key painpoints our customers are facing as they implement virtualization and cloud computing. In reality, these are the same challenges data center managers have been facing for years. What we want to do is help them deliver high service level times, prevent downtime so their businesses can be up and running and then ensure they’re operating with the highest levels of efficiency.

When you introduce new technology like virtualization or thin provisioning there’s always risk; and we want to help you get visibility and minimize that risk so these critical applications can remain online and perform their required functions. As you move to the private cloud there’s also the need to automate. IT has to deliver services...

Ballooning  storage costs? , Symantec to the rescue

Storage requirements in the data centers have been increasing dramatically over the last decade. IDC predicts annual storage system shipments will increase to 76.9 exabytes by 2014, a 49% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). At the same time  data centers are trying to figure out ways to cut costs both in terms of capital expenditure ( Capex ) needs as well as Operating costs ( Opex)  needs. These trends together put a lot of pressure on data center IT organizations , leaving them frustrated trying to figure a way out.

Fortunately, there is a way out: Many studies have shown the storage utilization rate is very low, averaging about 40% (“The Future of Storage Management”, Gartner February 2010). Surveys indicate that 86% of customers who already have thin capable hardware are not leveraging this capability (source: Symantec Operations Readiness Tools website at...

Announcing three beta add-ons for Veritas Operations Manager (VOM). These add-ons can make VOM more powerful and better aligned to your needs:

  • Scripting - allows administrators to store their scripts on the Operations Manager central management server, execute them on selected hosts or on a Business Entity, and monitor the script output status.
  • Veritas Cluster Server (VCS) password management - allows administrators to modify non-secure clusters user's authentication password
  • Package anomaly - compares a set of servers against a set of packages in an attempt to find systems that are non-standard or have installations different than other similar or related systems in the data center
