The Connect team has been very busy the past month - I wanted to give you a quick update on what's new and what's coming next:

New Communities:

In late October we launched the new Partner community and just today we are introducing a new Developer community.  You can read more about these communities by visiting their respective community landing pages.  If you are a Symantec Channel partner or Developer jump in the conversation!

Faster Performance:

This week we completed a major hardware upgrade on Connect.  We've essentially tripled the infrastructure supporting the service.  You should see faster browsing and faster search results.

New Features:

We've tweaked dozens features on Connect, but a few notable changes are:

  • Updated Group landing pages
  • One click subscribe/unsubscribe from group email...

By just about every measurement, Symantec Connect is a huge success in enabling users to troubleshoot their issues, allowing users to network and exchange information and insight into how to maximize the strength of their Symantec products, but also in innovating in terms of a community solution. No other community from any other enterprise company provides their users with the breath of functionality in terms of forums, videos, idea exchange, article libraries… and all in one integrated space. That being said, the future of Symantec Connect’s success is outside of these protective walls. It’s in the vast ocean of Symantec-oriented discussions that are initiated every minute of every day on Twitter, Facebook, thousands of other forums, blogs, and links being shared between users.

For example, using a real-time listening platform, we can see that just in the past week, “Symantec” has been mentioned in:...

As you may have noticed, the rewards program catalog has seen some changes recently. We're excited to announce that you now have more options. Through the variety of gift cards offered (particularly Amazon.com) you can receive any of the items previously offered, and more!  And at the same rates.

The change was made strictly due to financial reasons. It's very expensive to ship items around the world. Often we found that we were paying 7 or 8 times the cost of the items just to ship them. Those are costs that are tough to justify, especially in these tough economic times. We had a couple of options:

  • Increase the cost of rewards across the board (which would have penalized all of our users).
  • Charge shipping back to the recipient (which would have penalized our non-US users).
  • Go to an electronic redemption model.

Hopefully, electronic redemption will work out for everyone. We will be adding more electronic...

You may have already noticed our newest feature on Connect, Ideas.  The concept is simple, we are proving a place where the community can suggest ideas for new features in Symantec products, new products altogether or even ideas for how Symantec as a company could change.  You can even suggest ideas for Connect.  Once an idea is submitted, community members can vote that idea up or down.  The page defaults to list ideas that are "popular now" at the top of the list.  So as you vote you increase the visibility of various ideas.  Take a look and let us know what you think - in fact, submit some ideas for how we can improve Symantec Connect!

The short video below will show you around ideas.

It's not easy being green!

In my last entry, I suggested I'd "elude" to this "green" a bit more.  Hopefully, you are all aware there are a number of technical support folks currently on the SEP community helping answer questions, creating articles that can solve many end-users problems (see here):
https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/tro...

So, you may be asking what this has to do with "being green?"  Good question - the tech support staff has a green badge included with their profile, so you can always identify them on the community.

I'd like to ask you help make "being green" a bit easier by...

New Symantec Rewards Point Structure

We are excited to announce a new point structure for the Symantec Connect Rewards program. This new point structure is the result of feedback from you, the users.

No longer is there a maximum number of points that you can earn when you contribute to the community. And no longer will the community managers be responsible for determining the number of points you will receive per content item. Also, you’ll find that content that is of little value to the community is no longer given the same weight as valuable solutions and information.

Beginning today, Monday, 11 May, 2009, you will receive a baseline number of points for each contribution you make, and the community itself will determine the total number of points you will receive for your contribution. When another community member finds your content valuable, he or she can give it a “thumbs up” vote. Each thumbs up vote will add points to...

Several of you probably already noticed the new features we launched this week in Connect.  If you didn't, check below for a quick recap of some of the highlights:

Read and Unread threads in the forum view.  If you've viewed a thread, then come back later and somebody else has added a comment since your last visit we've added a nifty blue dot telling you to take a look at the new content.  As an added bonus, if you click on the blue dot rather than the thread title you'll not only open the thread, but you will jump to the first unread post in the thread.  Very cool.  Similarly, the "solved" icon links to the solution in the thread.

Threaded & nested forums.  You can now reply directly to a comment and have your reply "inserted...

It's been a couple of weeks since my last update on Connect. During that time we've been working on several (and by several I mean more than 150) enhancements to Connect that will roll out over the next three to four weeks as part of our 1.1 release. Before I get to a more detailed list, here are the big enhancements coming before the end of April:

Performance. We're making several tweaks to performance - especially when publishing content.

Login State. In addition to allowing you to stay logged in for a week at a time, we are returning you to the page where you clicked the "login" link rather than redirecting you to the home page.

Ideas. If you've ever wanted to share an Idea on a feature for an existing Symantec product or a new product altogether, this is your chance. Submit your idea and vote on other ideas. Top ideas "float" to the...

The “Trusted Advisor” designation is given to an elite group of Symantec Connect community members who voluntarily share their expertise and experience with the Symantec Connect Community. Trusted Advisors are identified in the community with a special badge and are the front line of support for community users. Trusted Advisors are not Symantec Corp. employees.

Nomination Procedure

To be eligible for consideration for Trusted Advisor status, users must have been part of the community for a minimum of 120 days. Exceptions must be approved by the Trusted Advisor committee. The user must be fully active within the community and be willing to accept the roles and responsibilities of a Trusted Advisor. Symantec employees are not eligible for Trusted Advisor status. Nominations for Trusted Advisor may be made by anyone by emailing the following information to leslie_miller@symantec.com....

Hi all - a few days ago I wrote about several changes we made in response to feedback this community provided.  Today, we're making several additional changes that I want to make you aware of.

One of the biggest concerns with Connect has been how to navigate to and post forum discussion threads.  We created a very flexible architecture that allowed you to post a forum discussion in more than one product board.  Unfortunately, this caused some confusion.  So, starting today, we are making a few changes to the forums to make them behave more like a traditional forum.  This will, of course, result in the loss of some of that fancy multi-tag functionality, but based on your feedback, ease of navigation is more important.  You asked for it, you got it.  Here's what we are doing:

FORUM LISTING PAGES:  Previously we had one listing page of forum threads...

In the spirit of openness that a community site like this is built on I want to take a minute to address a few things related to the launch of Connect. Specifically, I want to talk about two things:

  1. Status of bug fixes
  2. What the future holds

STATUS OF BUG FIXES

In the first few hours and days of the launch we (and you) identified a number of bugs with the site.  It would be disingenuous to ignore that they happened or to downplay how they have affected what you do in the community.  Rather than come up with excuses as to why they happened, I’d like to give you a quick update on where we are with fixing them.

SEARCH RESULTS: We multiplied the indexing speed by 5X and I am pleased to report that the entire site is now indexed.

REDIRECTS FROM OLD POSTS: There was a major issue with redirecting from old forum posts to new forum posts. This bug has also been addressed. If you use a...

There have been a number of questions about what the little pieces of pie next to usernames mean. It is simply a quick, visual way for users to identify the lifetime contributions that different users have made to the site. Where possible, we have transferred over status from the Juice, STN and the Altiris Support Forums. (For example, STN users received 3 points for every post on the old site. Juice user points transferred straight across.) You can find out how you can earn points that contribute to your status here.

After a year of planning and development we've finally launched Connect 1.0.  We not only built a new community site but migrated content and users from Symantec Technology Network, Juice and the Altiris Technical Support Forums.  While it would be impossible to list all the features in the site, here are a few we think you'll really like:

  1. All content can be tagged with more than one product and topic.
  2. Forum discussions can be marked as "solved"
  3. Images can easily be uploaded into any content type
  4. Community members can create any content type
  5. Community members earn points for participating on the site, which can be translated into rewards

More importantly, we are committed to continuing development on Connect.  We've already started development on Connect 1.1 and planning for Connect 2.0.  Here's some things that will be coming in the near future:

  1. Ideas - we...
