As mentioned earlier, we've been hard at work on a redesigned Symantec Connect.  You are now looking at the finished product.  We had four main goals for this new design:

  1. Simplify navigation
  2. Improve search
  3. Clean up distractions
  4. Help new users understand how the site works

Along the way we fixed dozens of bugs and make other smaller enhancements.  As always, this isn't the end of the road - we continue to make adjustments to Connect every week based on your feedback.  The video below will give you a quick overview of what's new.  We hope you like it.

After reaching the ripe old age of 18 months Connect is due for a refresh.  In the next few weeks we will begin rolling out a completely redesigned community website.  We’ve come a long way since the original Connect site launched in March 2009.  In that 18 month period we’ve basically doubled in size and are can now boast more than:

  • 3.5 Million monthly page views
  • 190,000 registered members
  • 500,000 discussions, articles, and comments

For this redesign we carefully analyzed traffic patterns on the site, conducted in depth focus groups, and consulted several celebrity astrologers.  We are very excited about what we came up with.  Here’s a sneak peek of what we wanted to improve and how we are doing it:

What do you do if your computer freezes and restarting just won’t do the trick? Or if you click on a link that ends up being malicious? What if your hard drive crashes and none of your files are where they should be? If you’re anything like me—you call on your systems administrator who comes in to save the day.

Most administrators do much more than handle support-related requests. They keep entire data centers up and running, they recover and protect valuable customer data and keep systems up to date so that they are safe from malicious attacks and other causes of downtime. They manage an ever-increasing amount of data and storage resources that keeps growing and growing. They wear sweatshirts to work in July because of the cool environments in which they are forced to work.

Now think of where you and your business would be without good systems administrators. Valuable time, resources and frustration would be expended trying to resolve issues and...

Wishing all of the admins out there a Happy System <Storage, Server, DBA> Admin Day from the Symantec Connect community team!!!! May your day be full of smoothly-running machines, fine-tuned software, and everyone in your office taking you out for lunch and generally appreciating your fabulousness.

Last year, we asked all of you for your best admin stories/nightmares. You really are a put-upon bunch - our condolences. We had so much fun reading them that we're doing the same thing this year. Being part of the User Group experience doesn't require a secret handshake, or any sort of painful or humiliating initiation. I infiltrated a meeting of the Salt Lake Endpoint Management User Group the other day and I had a pretty good time. I signed in, got my name tag (still virtually incognito because it didn't say "Ohzone" on it) and wandered over to the breakfast spread.

OK, maybe it wasn't a trip to Disneyland, but there were some pretty helpful demonstrations by other Symantec product users with time to discuss individual experiences and needs. There were Symantec product people on hand to answer questions.

Hello team,

Automatic thread locking is now live on Connect:

Rules for locking a thread:

  • A thread will be locked if it has not been replied to in 6 months (six months from the last comment).
  • A thread will be locked if it has been marked as solved and has not been replied to in 1 month (1 month from the last comment).
  • A thread with no replies will stay open indefinitely.

Messages to be displayed at the end of the thread (where comment box normally appears): "This discussion has been locked because [there have been no replies in six months] or [the thread has been solved and there have been no replies in 1 month]. Please start a new discussion." This message should only be visible if the user has rights to comment (they are an authenticated user).

Hello team,

Here are a few Connect tasks we've completed recently:

  • Module Update:

    Applied a security update, v6.x-1.2, to the Private Message module.

  • Feed Fix:

    Fixed an issue where some of the usernames in the "Connect Feed" weren't hyperlinked to their respective user profiles.

  • Ideas Fix:

    Discovered and fixed an issue where the status of an Idea was able to be updated but not reset to the default "set status".

  • Events Fix:

    Users reported that they were not able to set the time when they submitted a new Event. This is now fixed.

Video and screencast recordings are a great way to share information with the rest of the community. Here are some best practices, tips, tricks and guidelines for how to export your video files so that we can get them up on Symantec Connect quickly for you. For those of you who are already creating screencasts, please share your best tips and tricks in the comments below, too.

Start with a Script

  • Write out your script in advance, with major demo areas emphasized, as well as and intro and conclusion.
  • Practice running through the script several times. Make sure to practice moving the mouse in smooth motions, and not to move it unnecessarily while recording.

Set Up Your Computer for Recording

  • Please use a microphone for best audio quality. Don’t turn it all the way up to full volume as you can get reverberation.
  • Clean up your computer desktop so that files or personal backgrounds that you may not want to share...

Hello again team,

It's been a busy week for the Connect dev team ;) Here are a few Connect tasks we've completed this week:

  • UI Tweaks:

    We realized that once you filtered blog posts by author, there was no way to 'undo' the filter. This has been fixed.

  • Performance

    - Removed some one-time use code to minimize the memory footprint.
    - Changed the way we load seldom-used code so memory is freed up for other tasks.
    - Shifted some of our code to leverage the Java engine on the search server.
    - Re-factored database queries behind Connect and community feeds and feeds at the bottom of community overview pages.

  • More Calendars:

    Added calendar views to event lists site-wide.

  • Script Magic:

    - Added a script that automatically refreshes items featured in the "popular" lists.
    - Added a script that removes...
