The Connect site has over 4,000 content items added each month – from forum posts and comments, to videos, articles, blog posts, downloads and ideas. With so much content available, it can be tough to find that one item that you’re looking for. Faceted search lets you quickly narrow down and refine your search results based on the criteria you set, by selecting and combining various attributes – or facets. By adding more facets to your search selection, you continue to refine your search based on your own criteria, to get to that one piece of information that you need.

To try out faceted search:

1. From any page on the site type your text search in the box. Notice that if you’re already in a community area, Search will automatically refine your search to that community section. You can also choose ‘Entire site’ if you want to broaden your search.

For this example, I’ll type in ‘SEP 12 Installation...

The Symantec Connect team has been working on a refresh of the Connect look and feel to align better with the new Symantec.com web site and to improve customer experience when crossing Symantec web properties. There are no functional or navigational changes to this refresh.

What’s New:

  • Colors of navigation bars and links
  • Colors of user badges
  • New banner on home page

  • Updated site design to more closely align with Symantec's corporate brand and image.
  • Added a helper page that lists Symantec's products and the community they are located in. (See http://www.symantec.com/connect/community-product-map)
  • Fixed an issue that was keeping Connect's User search from working properly.
  • Added code that hides unpublished groups from users so they cannot associate new posts with these groups.
  • Updated the site Terms and Conditions.

  • Added search help page that explains the proper syntax for simple and complex search queries on Connect.
  • Added the ability to target a search on a specific support forum. The feature is context aware so if you're viewing a specific forum, your search will be focused on the posts made to that forum.
  • Added a block to each community overview page with information about who that community's Community Manager is and how to contact them.
  • Added brief product/program descriptions under each of the forum names to guide users with questions to the appropriate product/program forum.
  • Modified the automatic email that group managers receive when a user leaves their group to include the departing user's Connect username.
  • Fixed an issue with the partner badge not displaying for some partners.
  • Moved 2,600 Workflow Component articles into the Symantec Workflow group.

  • Refactored the search submission form so users will no longer be faced with the "Confirm Form Resubmission" message as they search, browse to a result, and then click their browser's back button to return to their search results.
  • Tuned the design of forum pages to better expose the link to each comment (permalink) for sharing, referencing, or bookmarking.
  • Tuned the design of user badges to leverage new CSS3 techniques.
  • Streamlined forum comments by moving the hyperlinks that used to line the bottom of each comment into a dynamic "Actions" menu that now houses the links.
  • Fixed an issue with the iCal export (on event nodes) that was adding the incorrect event time to Outlook calendars.

  • Changed the behavior of the search page so the "Retain current filters" option is selected by default.
  • Changed the behavior of the search widget so the "Search Users" option is never selected by default.
  • Added code that allows users to forward private messages to other users.
  • Added code that lets users remove themselves from private message threads.
  • Resolved an issue with the "Can you solve these?" block being empty when there were forum posts that needed to be solved.
  • Fixed an issue with users who were imported from legacy systems (Lithium forums) not being able to accept the Connect terms and conditions -- and, as a result, not being allowed to log in to Connect.

  • Added a blue tint to the most recent comment in a thread. This should make it easy to find the newest post in a long list of threaded comments.
  • Added a "Jump to latest comment" link to the bottom of forum posts to give users quick access to the newest comment in a discussion thread.
  • Modified notifications emails to properly link to a comment that's buried in several pages of comments.

  • Improved the Group List pages by:
    • Making each list community specific. (Visiting "/connect/endpoint-management/groups" will display a list of only the Endpoint Management groups, not all the groups on Connect.)
    • Moving the list of groups you are a member of to a "My Groups" tab on each of the group list pages.
    • Adding a search widget to each group list page that allows you to search Connect for a specific group.
    • Adding the number of members in each group to the group list pages.
    • Indenting child groups under their parent on the group list pages.
  • Refactored the "helpful" score on forum list pages to better represent the helpful nature of a post.
  • Addressed an issue with blank event calendars in each community.

This new feature allows Workflow help files to be served from Connect -- as both an article in Connect and as a screen in the Workflow product.   • Added a setting to the groups configuration page so a group owner can determine if content posted to his/her group is automatically tagged as private -- by default or public -- by default.
  • Fixed an issue with the SEO-friendly URL alias not updating after the title of a content piece was edited. This issue was especially evident when the name of a User Group was updated but the URL alias continued to use the old group name. (FYI: To prevent broken links, old aliases are preserved and continue to work even after content titles are changed and new aliases are generated.)
  • Fixed an issue that Google Chrome users where having with a very small popup (file upload) window opening when they used the image insert tool.
