Join a User Group - No Secret Handshake Required

Being part of the User Group experience doesn't require a secret handshake, or any sort of painful or humiliating initiation. I infiltrated a meeting of the Salt Lake Endpoint Management User Group the other day and I had a pretty good time. I signed in, got my name tag (still virtually incognito because it didn't say "Ohzone" on it) and wandered over to the breakfast spread.

OK, maybe it wasn't a trip to Disneyland, but there were some pretty helpful demonstrations by other Symantec product users with time to discuss individual experiences and needs. There were Symantec product people on hand to answer questions.

Connect Updates (21 May 2010)

Hello team,

Automatic thread locking is now live on Connect:

Rules for locking a thread:

  • A thread will be locked if it has not been replied to in 6 months (six months from the last comment).
  • A thread will be locked if it has been marked as solved and has not been replied to in 1 month (1 month from the last comment).
  • A thread with no replies will stay open indefinitely.

Messages to be displayed at the end of the thread (where comment box normally appears): "This discussion has been locked because [there have been no replies in six months] or [the thread has been solved and there have been no replies in 1 month]. Please start a new discussion." This message should only be visible if the user has rights to comment (they are an authenticated user).

Hello team,

Here are a few Connect tasks we've completed recently:

  • Module Update:

    Applied a security update, v6.x-1.2, to the Private Message module.

  • Feed Fix:

    Fixed an issue where some of the usernames in the "Connect Feed" weren't hyperlinked to their respective user profiles.

  • Ideas Fix:

    Discovered and fixed an issue where the status of an Idea was able to be updated but not reset to the default "set status".

  • Events Fix:

    Users reported that they were not able to set the time when they submitted a new Event. This is now fixed.

Creating a Technical Video/Screencast for Connect? Start Here.

Video and screencast recordings are a great way to share information with the rest of the community. Here are some best practices, tips, tricks and guidelines for how to export your video files so that we can get them up on Symantec Connect quickly for you. For those of you who are already creating screencasts, please share your best tips and tricks in the comments below, too.

Start with a Script

  • Write out your script in advance, with major demo areas emphasized, as well as and intro and conclusion.
  • Practice running through the script several times. Make sure to practice moving the mouse in smooth motions, and not to move it unnecessarily while recording.

Set Up Your Computer for Recording

  • Please use a microphone for best audio quality. Don’t turn it all the way up to full volume as you can get reverberation.
  • Clean up your computer desktop so that files or personal backgrounds that you may not want to share...

Hello again team,

It's been a busy week for the Connect dev team ;) Here are a few Connect tasks we've completed this week:

  • UI Tweaks:

    We realized that once you filtered blog posts by author, there was no way to 'undo' the filter. This has been fixed.

  • Performance

    - Removed some one-time use code to minimize the memory footprint.
    - Changed the way we load seldom-used code so memory is freed up for other tasks.
    - Shifted some of our code to leverage the Java engine on the search server.
    - Re-factored database queries behind Connect and community feeds and feeds at the bottom of community overview pages.

  • More Calendars:

    Added calendar views to event lists site-wide.

  • Script Magic:

    - Added a script that automatically refreshes items featured in the "popular" lists.
    - Added a script that removes...

Hello team,

Here are a few Connect tasks we've completed recently:

  • New Secret Sauce:

    Re-factored the scoring algorithm that determines what posts show up as "popular".

  • New Calendar View:

    Added a calendar view to the activity feed. When you visit a group page and adjust the content filter to show only events, you'll get them all organized in a calendar view.

  • Localization:

    Added a "translations available" link to the blog pages.

  • Bug Fix:

    Fixed an error that caused a white screen when a comment was deleted.

  • Analytics:

    Added code to track feedback submissions.

  • Nodequeue Update:

    Updated the Nodequeue module v6.x-2.9 (2010-Mar-16). Release notes: http://drupal.org/node/744404

Hi all, Here are a few of the tasks we've completed on Connect in the past week:

  • Drupal Core Update:

    Updated Drupal core to version 6.16. This also fixes a multiple security issues described in DRUPAL-SA-CORE-2010-001.

  • Notifications Bug Fix:

    Users with no subscriptions were reporting a White Screen of Death (WSOD) when they went to their profile page, clicked the Notifications tab and then clicked the groups tab. This bug has been squashed.

  • Search Code Update:

    Updated Apache Solr Search Integration to 6.x-1.0 (2010-Mar-03). Release notes: http://drupal.org/node/752002

  • Checkbox Validate Code Update:

Hi all,

Here's a list of the new stuff we've added to Connect this week*:

  • Comment Notifications:

    If a user gets carried away with their reply to a forum post and submits pages and pages of solutions to a problem, only the first paragraph will be emailed to subscribers.

  • New Algorithm for What's Popular:

    We've just implemented some new math that should make the "popular" items that surface to the top of list pages more meaningful. We've added a "degrade" aspect to the formula so those items that were wildly popular a year ago will slowly fade from memory -- like real life.

  • Filter by Solved in Search Results:

    You can now filter search results by those items that have been marked solved (or unsolved).

  • Filter by Blog Author:

    If you're reading blog posts, you can now filter them (using a dropdown...
