We see it in the news almost every day. Businesses unable to serve their customers because their network is down or they have lost business-critical data.  It’s not an enterprise problem. Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are also waking up and realizing that they can protect themselves by implementing backup technologies that allow them to keep their operations running even in the event of an outage.

Backup has evolved from a luxury to a necessity, other technologies are progressing rapidly. Let’s consider  virtualization. Virtualization improves IT flexibility by creating a central pool of resources, allowing for rapid provisioning of services on demand. It can reduce costs by avoiding the need to purchase and maintain storage and server hardware that are only needed for times of peak demand. In short, it improves almost every aspect of IT operations – except backup.

As SMBs increasingly embrace virtualization, they are forced to...

As a small business owner, tax season can be… taxing. Between filing deadlines, issuing important tax documents to employees, and regular warnings from the IRS about scams and phishing attacks meant to trick you into revealing personal information about yourself or your business, it’s easy to understand why so many small business owners dread tax season.

But despite the added stress tax season brings, it can serve as an important yearly “self-check” reminder to make sure you are taking steps to protect your critical business information. Here are a few things to remember as you begin preparing for tax season:

Secure your data – Do you prepare your business’ taxes on a company computer? If so, you likely have some very sensitive financial information on your hard drive. Make sure your files...

In collaboration with the SECURITY RESPONSE TEAM

As we predicted toward the end of last year, we’re already seeing an upswing in ransomware activity in 2013. The ransomware extortion scam has been in existence now for a number of years, but its popularity among cybercriminals has grown over the last two years and it continues to indiscriminately plague computer users in greater numbers. These attacks have evolved from website graffiti, to malware, to destruction or theft of business critical information, and more recently to extortion. SMBs are particularly vulnerable to these types of attacks because many don’t have the necessary IT resources or backups to recover hijacked assets. To help customers and partners better understand these attacks, Symantec has tracked this growing menace in various ...

Just two weeks ago, a non-profit healthcare provider was slapped with a $50,000 fine from the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) for violating the HIPAA security rules, after losing an unencrypted laptop containing the sensitive personal information of 441 patients. This is the first HHS penalty for a data breach involving less than 500 victims.

For small healthcare providers, this signals an escalation in the consequence of a data breach, as organizations will be held accountable regardless of size. A fine of $50,000 is a lot of money for a small practice, especially a non-profit provider.

As we’ve discussed in the past, the average cost per record of a healthcare data breach is $240, which is 24 percent higher than average. As fines become more common, healthcare organizations of all sizes need to make sure patient data is managed appropriately.

A complete...

Virtualization provides a lot of opportunities and advantages for SMBs.  They can reduce their capital and operating expenses and use fewer servers for the same number of applications.  But many SMBs are unfamiliar with virtualization and that was the key driver behind our latest SMB Twitter chat.

Last week, Symantec’s SMB security experts, Dan Nadir and Elias AbuGhazaleh, engaged with Small Business Trends’ Editor-in-Chief Anita Campbell for a Twitter chat about what SMBs need to know about virtualization. The chat covered a variety of topics including benefits, challenges, and how to get started.

The chat drew more than 100 participants which included SMB owners and thought leaders; and it produced more than 550 Tweets.  Most importantly, we listened and learned a lot from SMBs directly: We learned they’re eager to take advantage of the benefits of virtualized technology...

Today’s small and medium-sized businesses have a variety of technologies available to help them compete in the fast-paced global market. One of the most significant tools at their disposal is the cloud, which lets them take advantage of cost-effective, agile IT services. Cloud-based solutions are quick to deploy and scale according to need, which is especially useful given the limited IT staff SMBs typically have at their disposal.

What today’s SMBs might not know, however, is that deploying the cloud can result in hidden costs. Symantec’s 2013 Avoiding the Hidden Costs of Cloud Survey reveals four important steps to effectively deploy the cloud without experiencing these issues.

Focus policies on information and people, not technologies and platforms

Despite the benefits of the cloud, businesses aren’t taking full advantage of its capabilities. This is usually a problem...

Almost every enterprise IT environment is running a virtual machine, and in recent years, small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) have shown a strong interest in virtualization.  They read about it and see other businesses enjoying the benefits, but are unsure exactly how it works and how to successfully adopt it within their own organizations. The 2012 Symantec Disaster Preparedness Survey revealed that SMB are beginning to understand and implement virtualization technologies but still have a long way to go.

Join Symantec’s SMB and virtualization experts, as well as Anita Campbell of Small Business Trends on Thursday, January 17 at 1:00 p.m. PT / 4:00 p.m. ET to chat about what SMBs need to know about going virtual with their technology.

SMBs need to understand virtualization...

For small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), 2012 will be known as the year hackers identified SMBs as stepping stones into larger, more lucrative targets. We saw the number of targeted attacks aimed at businesses with fewer than 250 employees double, climbing to 36 percent of all targeted attacks by mid-year. We also spotted some interesting trends among a new class of SMB, the accidental entrepreneurs, who are poised for explosive growth and aggressively leverage technology such as cloud computing to fast-track their success

Now as this year comes to an end, we turn our attention to what we expect will happen in the world of SMB information protection in 2013. While targeted attacks against SMBs will not let up, we’ll see SMBs fall victim to not only other cyber conflict but also of...

When it comes to integrating new technology in their business, small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) can be nimble because there’s less red tape – that’s why you’ll frequently find the latest tablet on the owner’s desk. But, when it comes to the cloud, SMBs have approached the technology with some hesitation.  However, we are now seeing more and more SMBs embracing cloud and enjoying its benefits. They’ve already begun to use the cloud for storage and backups, and soon we’re going to see an increasing amount of SMBs moving to cloud-based security, while others that prefer on-premise protection today will begin to craft a plan to move to the cloud in time. Fortunately, there’s one solution that will keep their information safe in either environment: Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition 2013.

Everyone working in an SMB can see how...
