While 2010 was largely called the year of the disaster, 2011 actually saw an increase in the number of disasters. The Huffington Post reports that in 2011, thus far, the U.S. has had a record 10 weather catastrophes costing more than a billion dollars. SMBs that have not had to implement their disaster recovery, much less those that don’t have one in place at all, may see their businesses  tested by Mother Nature in 2012 like never before.

Yet 2011 research showed that organizations do not understand the importance of disaster preparedness. Half of SMBs do not have a disaster recovery plan in place, and 41 percent said that it never occurred to them to put together a plan while 40 percent stated that disaster preparedness is not a priority for them.

2011 is playing at as the Year of Virtualization for the small business.  While virtualization technology has been widespread among large enterprises for years, the technology has penetrated small businesses to a great extent this year.  According to ESG, virtualization is the number 1 spending priority for 2011.

The vast majority of small business owners truly think they’re safe from cyber security threats, even as many fail to take fundamental precautions to keep their companies safe. That’s what a new survey released today by Symantec and the National Cyber Security Alliance as part of National Cyber Security Awareness Month shows. In fact, 85 percent of respondents believe their company is safe from hackers, viruses, malware or a cyber security breach.

This month is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, the seventh-annual public awareness campaign that encourages individuals and businesses to take action towards protecting their information and the computers where it resides.  According to a new survey of U.S. small business owners sponsored by National Cyber Security Alliance and Symantec, and conducted by Zogby International, that will be released later this month, seven in ten (69 percent) of small businesses report that Internet security is critical to their business' success.
