The True Cost of Cloud ?

I'm going to be controversial for a minute. Will cloud actually make IT cheaper? Public cloud service providers often state that their costs are lower, using criteria such as Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) to show how they can run services more cost-effectively than the in-house equivalents.

Indeed, such providers have the benefit of scale - and can therefore negotiate cheaper deals with equipment suppliers; its also in their commercial interests to be architecting and running IT as efficiently as possible. Without a doubt, it is possible to take specific examples of workloads and demonstrate how running them in the cloud costs less than running them in-house.

Cost is a movable feast, however. If equipment already exists, under-utilised, in the data centre, it might be cheaper to use it rather than rent processor cycles from a third party. There's also the operational overhead - but in a...

Hands-on lab with Dynamic Multi-Pathing for VMware

If you'd like to get some hands-on experience with our recently released Dynamic Multi-Pathing 6.0 for VMware, plan to attend the lab scheduled for Tuesday May 8 from 2:30 - 3:30pm in Room 124.  During the lab, you'll perform the installation of DMP for VMware onto a running ESX server with SAN attached storage.  You'll also be get the opportunity to explore DMP's integration with vCenter, allowing you deep visibility into the attached storage, array extended attributes, and visibility into I/O statistics and bottleneck troubleshooting.  By the end of the lab, you'll have experienced the ease of installation, viewed our detailed I/O statistics, and manipulated I/O load balancing policies.

Are you attending Vision 2012 in Las Vegas? Be sure to stop by and visit us at the Connect Lounge in the Expo Hall. Besides discovering what's new on Connect, we'd love to challenge you to a Kinect game! We'll have two stations set up to extend the fun.
