Effective IT strategy requires a comprehensive approach that aligns IT and the business by addressing multiple areas of discipline including IT risk management, operational efficiency, IT best practice and technology enablement. In particular, it requires a process that follows a proven model and takes into account an organization’s unique culture and attitudes toward risk.

At Symantec, we believe that good IT strategy should be capable of doing two things at the same time. IT strategy written and executed in the right way should drive efficiency up and risk down.

Many organizations today have become too fixated on one or other of these two focus areas, this can lead to inefficient use of money and resources (if focus is too fixated on “risk”) or unacceptable risk postures (when IT strategy focuses too heavily on efficiency). Clearly a balance is needed. The Symantec INFORM methodology helps our clients to find that balance by thinking...

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT
24/7 data growth has caused backup windows to disappear, storage capacity to expand and IT to stagger under the management load. As I meet with Symantec customers and partners to talk about some of the impacts that cloud computing is having (or may have) on their businesses, I hear time and time again about the importance of data and about the fact that the governance and information security & management policy that surrounds data will be key to ensuring successful transitions to new computing and service delivery models.

In almost every case, though, the organisation that I am speaking to is struggling with the same problem.... Where on earth do I start with all of this ?

I hear a lot of potential answers to this question ("data classification", "virtualization", "service level agreements",  etc..). For me, these are all too technical and specific as a first step to the creation of a cloud computing strategy (or any IT strategy for that matter !). In my training (a good few years ago now) in the business of Risk...

I'm going to be controversial for a minute. Will cloud actually make IT cheaper? Public cloud service providers often state that their costs are lower, using criteria such as Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) to show how they can run services more cost-effectively than the in-house equivalents.

Indeed, such providers have the benefit of scale - and can therefore negotiate cheaper deals with equipment suppliers; its also in their commercial interests to be architecting and running IT as efficiently as possible. Without a doubt, it is possible to take specific examples of workloads and demonstrate how running them in the cloud costs less than running them in-house.

Cost is a movable feast, however. If equipment already exists, under-utilised, in the data centre, it might be cheaper to use it rather than rent processor cycles from a third party. There's also the operational overhead...
