I'm going to be controversial for a minute. Will cloud actually make IT cheaper? Public cloud service providers often state that their costs are lower, using criteria such as Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) to show how they can run services more cost-effectively than the in-house equivalents.

Indeed, such providers have the benefit of scale - and can therefore negotiate cheaper deals with equipment suppliers; its also in their commercial interests to be architecting and running IT as efficiently as possible. Without a doubt, it is possible to take specific examples of workloads and demonstrate how running them in the cloud costs less than running them in-house.

Cost is a movable feast, however. If equipment already exists, under-utilised, in the data centre, it might be cheaper to use it rather than rent processor cycles from a third party. There's also the operational overhead...

Are you one of those IT folks that believe in the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” philosophy when it comes to your backup environment?  Maybe it took a while to get the entire backup and restore procedure, tuning, policies and internal SLA’s all set and defined, and now you are content that “it’s running”.  Or, maybe you fear the unknown, downtime and complexity of the upgrade process itself, and so you “leave well enough alone”, even if it means not taking advantage of some of those nice features that caught your attention in the new release.

Coming up next week, May 7th through 10th at Vision 2012 in Las Vegas, we can share with you what others have experienced with their upgrades, and some valuable information from the Symantec experts.

March 2012 saw the release of NetBackup 7.5 with new features such as NetBackup Accelerator, NetBackup Replication Director, and NetBackup Search. This...

Are you attending Vision 2012 in Las Vegas? Be sure to stop by and visit us at the Connect Lounge in the Expo Hall. Besides discovering what's new on Connect, we'd love to challenge you to a Kinect game! We'll have two stations set up to extend the fun. Plus, at the end of the show we'll be giving away the 2 Xbox systems to two lucky winners. The Star Wars Special Edition Xbox will be awarded to the person who achieves the highest score on the Kinect Star Wars Dancing Mode. (In the case of a tie, we'll draw a random winner.)  If you don't light up the dance floor like a wookie in the Chalmun's Cantina in Mos Eisley, you can enter the drawing for the other game system by registering for a free account on Connect. (If you already have an account, we simply need you to verify your username with us.)

Both systems will be...
