It was a good night at the SC Magazine awards gala yesterday. We were very pleased to win not one but two awards yesterday, making VeriSign one of only three companies to bring home more than one prize. You may recall that we were nominated originally in four categories. The winners were VeriSign Code Signing in the Best Security Software Development category and VeriSign's Personal Identity Portal for Best Identity Management Solution.

Next week the ecommerce trade show and event calendar explodes. There are three events all in one week that online retailers do not want to miss. Etail West, Miva Merchant Conference, and Parallels Summit are chocked full of great sessions, speakers, and exhibitors. Of course, VeriSign is going to be there too to help you learn how to increase your online sales by instilling trust in customers.

eTail West 2010 February 22-25 in Palm Desert, CA

On Tuesday February 23rd at 1:10pm Tim Callan's session is a must see - How Trust Indicators Can Improve Conversions. Tim is presenting with Vibhav Prasad, VP of Online Marketing at 1-800-Flowers.com as a part of the Customer Acquisition & User Experience Innovation track.

HostingCon 2009
(August 10-12) is the biggest trade show for the web hosting industry. This year
web hosts, domain registrars, and online service providers are converging on Washington DC starting today. VeriSign and the team from the VeriSign Partner Program are going to be
there in force.

On Tuesday August 11th at 2pm, I am speaking on "Selling Premium Services to Cost-Conscious Customers". How to effectively sell value-added products in the face of the current downbeat economy is a hot topic. In fact, I discussed that in a pre-event interview with David Hamilton from Web Hosting Industry Review.

If you cannot make the presentation, make sure to come by the VeriSign booth (#416) and say hello!

My eTail East track presentation on security as a driver of online transactions was a big success. There were so many people in the room that the conference staff had to go out and round up some more chairs. As always we had a lively discussion and great interest after the speech.

We followed up wtih a by-invitation lunch with the online sales leaders of about twenty-five lighthouse e-commerce sites. We broke into four groups, each of which chose a topic to workshop and then read out to the rest. They were:

  • Paid search and SEO
  • Online security as a sales enabler (inspired by the previous speech)
  • Optimizing the value of your confirmation page
  • Social networking

as a sales, brand, and awareness driver

It was a nice session, and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Next week I'm off to HostingCon in Washington...

Greetings from Las Vegas. Today we saw two presentations regarding attacks that affect the world of SSL. I'll give you a capsule summary of each and tell you how VeriSign certificates fit in. Lest this post become a tome, the summaries will have to be oversimplified. I'll strive to represent the subjects as accurately as I can.

First up was Moxie Marlinspike, detailing the latest additions to his sslstrip tool. The focus of this presentation was various ways to use null characters to fool browsers and other pieces of relying software into believing a certificate has been issued to a different domain than the one to which is was actually issued. The idea is that the attack would give the online criminal the ability to put up a certificate on what appears to be the exact same domain name as the targeted site. sslstrip accomplishes this feat through a Man-in-the-Middle attack and uses the null-character certificate to create its false certificates on the fly.

I'm...

If you're in the greater Washington D.C. area, make sure you drop by to see these two speaking opportunities from VeriSign representatives.

I will be speaking on using security indicators to increase online sales at eTail East in Baltimore on August 4. If you're going to eTail, make sure you come up after the speech and say hello.

Fellow VeriSign blogger Bob Angus will be presenting how to sell premium services to cost-sensitive customers at HostinCon in Washington D.C. on August 11. I'll be at HostingCon as well, so once again, if you're an SSL Blog reader, stop by the VeriSign table.
