Backing UpSyndicate content

Dear all, I had to substitue a server and did a restore (BE 10d) of a data partition from the last full backup followed by my latest differential backup. In the meantime a user has renamed a folder (say from Folder A to Folder B) . So this ends up in a mess. The Folder A is restored containing the files from the last full fullbackup. That's not surprising and OK to me. But folder B contains only the files changed since the last backup. What I expected is that renaming of a folder would have led to reset the archive bits, but it doesn't . This is caused by the Windows 2003 Server file system. You can verify  this by renaming a folder. The archive bit does not change. If you do this on a file the bit changes.  Has anyone an idea how I can get renamed folders completly beeing backup up by differential method??? Many thanks for your help. Kind regards. fortitudo

i haven't been able to resolve this problem and it looks like have to resort to a forum. let me start  with a run down of the configs, the problem at short, and then a detailed description of the problem... using backup exec 12 using windows standard 2003 using aofo running full backups recently updated no exchange just a file and ad server. using dell powervault for backup device using 400/800GB lto ultrium 3 data tape cartridge here's the problem... we have to switch two tapes in order for a backup to complete. recently the server storage has been exponentially growing because more pdf's are being made. when i switch to the second tape it fails with an unknown error. here's the problem in detail... on monday morning i insert mondays tape. the job is scheduled to start at 7pm monday night. on tuesday at 9am the tape is ejected from the tape drive and the job status is " ? loading media"  i insert  the second tape and it runs for sometime, suddenly...

On a machine running WinXP Pro sp3,  LiveState Recovery Desktop 3.03 had been running just fine.  Now when it tries to run the scheduled backup it hangs at 5% and never finishes.  No errors are put in the log or events history.  I tried uninstalling all Symantec products (it also has Symantec Anti-virus) and re-installing.  I even ran a registry cleaner to try and get rid of any old Symantec entries.  It will re-install just fine, however it still hangs at 5% when creating the system image.  We use LiveState Recovery 3.03 on 2 other machines and they are working just fine.  Does anyone know how to correct this issue or what could be the cause???

Hello, We have this error from time to time, but it usually fixes itself without any end user intervention.  However I am getting this error three nights in a row now on one of our domain controllers.  This started happening on Wed morning, and continued through Friday morning.  In all three instances the error message in the log is: Job ended: Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 1:18:54 AM Completed status: Failed Final error: 0xe0008488 - Access is denied. Final error category: Security Errors For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-33928 Errors Click an error below to locate it in the job log  Backup- \\dc1.domain.com\System?State V-79-57344-33928 - Unable to complete the operation for the selected resource using the specified options. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4     I am running version 12.5, I am still in the testing stage of this software, so I am using the trail version.  I did a full (copy file) backup with Program file, Document and Setting, and System State selected.  I have Office 2007 suit installed on this machine I am backing up.  To test if the backup worked as I wanted to, I reinstall Windows XP SP2.  Push the remote agent to the machine, and I did a restore job with the option of "restore over existing files" for the restore existing files option.  When I finish the restore and restart the computer, the MS Office word and other programs would run but with the Windows installer showing "preparing to install" and it never install anything.  I also cannot uninstall the Office suit because Windows thinks I did not uninstall it correctly.  Does someone else run into this...

backupexec 11d rev7170,sp4 with hotfix 62-65 on Windows 2003 sp2 server that (encrypted) backups to a USB hard drive on a nightly basis. Every Friday the plan was to use a duplicate job to copy the last nights backup to a secondary drive for longer retention. Backup selection list includes file, system state, exchange and sql database. However we get "Final error: 0xe0000f0c - An error occurred when attempting to initialize encryption for job. Final error category: Job Errors An error occurred when attempting to initialize encryption for job. The link refers to http://www.symantec.com/business/support/knowledge... This talks about GRT, Restores or Netware - none of which apply in this case. Both the duplicate and the FridayBackup use encryption - I had them using the same encryption key, different keys but get the same error. I did a test backup of a small selection of files and set up a duplicate job in the same manner as the existing job and this worked fine. Any...

I purchased Norton Ghost 12.0 last year, with the hopes that it would be the software I could use to do what I need. Here is my goal. I want to create an image of a laptop, which I plan to use to deploy across my organization.  This is to help speed up my time to deliver notebooks to the field, by managing my time through effective imaging techniques. I want to create a bootable Ghost disk, so I can create a ghost image of my laptops, and save them to a USB or network device. To do the network device, I know I need to load NIC drivers, yada yada yada.  I am not concerned with this so much right now, what I am concerned with, is being able to even start, so that I can boot to a Ghost disk, and create the image even to a USB device. I boot from the Norton Ghost 12.0 disk, and it doesnt appear to give me the option to create an image. From what I can tell, maybe I am using the wrong version of Symantec Norton Ghost. Do I...

Hi, we're having some issues with our Backups. We are running Backup Exec 12 SP2 with Server 2003.  Due to our current ever increasing amount of data, we've recently had to increase the number of tapes from two, to three. We have a three week retention period setup too in order to protect the tapes from being accidently over-written incase someone accidently puts the wrong tapes in. Now for the first week and a half or so, our backups ran fine. Then we ran into problems and have been for the last month or so. The jobs run, and the first two tapes are usually used to the max, then about 4 to 12GB of data is written to the third tape, the job enteres a queued state and asks for overwritable media, jams up the other jobs and the whole thing essentially falls apart. Now the problem is, why is it only writing partial data to the tape and then asking for a new one? We're using 800GB tapes, so there is plenty of space on the third tape to be used, but its like the system uses it...

I have an event that i need to have start ate an exact time. I have another event that is still running at this time. Is there a way to have the current event stop so the new event can run? Is it possible to have the first event start back up and complete once the second one finishes? Thank you

Applicable Releases:  VCS One 2.0 & 2.0RU1 10/5/2009 VCS One Backup and Recovery After implementing VCS One it’s important to have a good data protection plan to protect your Policy Master.  The following discusses best practices for backing up the VCS One Policy Master. What to Backup There are two parts to a successful VCS One backup strategy:  backing up the PM database and backing up the VCS One security brokers. Backing up the PM Database There are three methods for backing up the PM database: 1.    Database backup 2.    XML export 3.    Command file dump Database backups A database backup makes a copy of the PM database by quiescing I/O and copying the database file, transaction log, and the odbc.ini file.  Advantages:  •    Quick and allows for fast recovery.  Disadvantage •    Database backups cannot be edited offline. •   ...

Dear every professional here, Im using the monthly backup tape to backup every month and using daily backup tape to backup everyday. (actually all the monthly and daily backup tape are same, there are IBM LTO just label are different) p/s: This backup method had run almost 2 years. But yesterday my backup job is fail to backup (my job list only have this backup job which is for monthly and daily backup), the backup tape im using is monthly backup tape. So, i thought is backup tape problem and i manage to create a new backup tape. After created a new backup tape, i tried to backup but fail. (previously i had face this issue, but after i create new backup tape, problem solved) Very weird, i tried using the daily backup tape but it's success to backup. I had created 4pcs NEW backup tape, all fail to backup. I had using cleaning cartridge to clean the IBM backup device many time. If all the backup tape is fail to backup, i have...

We have 150 licenses for use with the Altiris Recovery Solution.  We upgraded to version 6.2.2801 a little while back and have been having consistent issues since that time.  We intially had an (re-)install type screen popping   up on every machine that previously had the client installed.  We made it past that issue, however we do not want this to happen again... We have approximately 40 PC's that SHOULD have the agent installed to them and be being backed up, however, the Altiris reports 141 licenses IN-USE.  By using the pre-created report "," there are 132 computers with the agent installed.  How are more licenses in-use than agents installed?  How do I correct this and remove the agent silently from those 90+ machines that should not be being backed up?  I do not want end-users to know that the client is being touched (removed). A second issue is space contstraints that we have recently...

Recently, backup jobs have started failing with this error message: Job name : Weekday Backups Job type : Backup Job status : Failed Job log : C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\Data\BEX02240.xml Server name : SPOT Selection list name : Daily Backup Device name : CERTANCE 1 Target name : CERTANCE 2 [0001..0005] Media set name : Weekday Backups Error category : Resource Errors Error : a000fe1f - The device cannot be found. As far as I know, nothing else has changed about our backups. I tried to update to service pack 5, hoping that would fix the problem.  I don't get any error messages when I do.  But when I check "About-> Help" in Backup Exec, it still says I'm using version 9.1 rev 4691

Currently running BE12.5 on Server 2003 SP2 and have a Hyper-V VM running Exchange 2007 and one running a developement version of SQL 2008.  All works great but when I backup the Exchange and SQL VMs I don't get the GRT functionality with indvidual emails, email boxes or databases.  Is this normal?  Maybe installing the agent on the VM and backing those up individually?  Is there a best practice on how to back-up with VM's that run other critical apps like Exchange, SQL or SharePoint?

Hi I would like to create a backupjob that backup the files to a tape, for then afterwards to delete these files, how can I accomplish this ? It should only be files that have not been accessed for 1 year ? Or if this is not possible that have not been changed for 2 or 3 years ? Or is it possible at all ? Thanks.

I am setting up my backup jobs for Enterprise Vault 8.0, using Netbackup 6.5.4. I have created the powershell scripts to set the vault stores and index locations into read-only mode, and tested them and they work. I have created the bpstart_notify.bat and bpend_notify.bat files in the NetBackup bin folders, to call the powershell scripts. I noticed that when I tried to run the bpstart_notify.bat and bpend_notify.bat files, while logged in as the local Administrator, rather than the EV Admin account, I got an error that said "User does not have permission to change backup mode...." My question is, is there some account I need to give permission to do this, that Netbackup uses to run it's backups? Also does anyone know if there is something I can put in the bpstart_notify.bat, that would cancel the backup job, if the vault store and index locations are not set ot backup mode? Thanks for any help.
