Hello everyone, We had a great meeting on Nov 18th with Mark Salmon presenting a technical review of Veritas Cluster Server (VCS) and the associated VCS testing tool called FireDrill.  These are two really great products from Symantec that are definitely leaders in their space. I have attached the two (2) presentations to this message for you to download and review. Thank you again to Symantec for the excellent food and door prizes and  we hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season with Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner.  We will plan to meet again sometime around February next year to get everything off to a great start. I'm new to Altiris. I went to the DS training and have purchased CMS. I'm looking to use the patch management portion of CMS. I'm having trouble understanding the documentation on this... Does anyone know of any videos that explains the NS or the patch management portion? Thank you for any help. ~Angie

Hi, Whats the best way to repair Service Desk 7 All the steps of my Installation worked perfectly up and until the last one, which is, Setup ServiceDesk. It allowed me to skip, retry or move to 'next' step. I had to skip 'twice' before it was complete, but would like to go back and complete these steps. Do i need to run setup from scratch? As in, from Altiris.ServiceDesk.2009.exe? Or from Add remove programmes? Regards Steve

The SWV 6.1 SP1 documentation states that to modify a VSP, a user must generally be a member of the local administrators group. However, rights to activate / deactivate a VSP can be granted using registry keys: The documentation is incorrect about the activate key and unclear about the the deactivate key. Users with have read access to the HKLM\System\Services\FSLX\Parameters\FSL\Rights\Activate key can activate VSPs. Users with read access to the HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\FSLX\Parameters\FSL\Rights\Deactivate key can deactivate VSPs. Probably this should be HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\FSLX\Parameters\FSL\Rights\Activate  and HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\FSLX\Parameters\FSL\Rights\Deactivate. These keys don't seem to exist in the standard setup. Should they be created?

I have noticed that some of the newer drivers do not appear discovered as needed when doing the instant support system health scan.  For instance, my dce7800's show as needing the network driver (sp39807).  This driver is about three drivers back for this computer model.  sp41246 came out sept of 2008, sp41804 came out nov of 2008, and finally, 45881 (which is not ssm compliant) came out in oct of this year.  I have made sure to update the tools often but still it seems like the drivers available to be scanned against are not being updated.  ALSO, when I take a look at my directory structure where the health scan package is on my ns server, there are many directories that are not referenced by a specific package (other than the HP Instant Support System Health Scan Package ()) package.  This is a HP Client manager 6 install that was upgraded to 7 and I *THINK* there may be some extra folders that are causing the issue.  I have a...

So after we reviewed the inventory rules in the last post, today we are going to look at the registry entries on the client that drive the various PMS inventory components and policies. So let's look at an extract of some interesting registry keys (from my test systems): [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\Altiris Agent\InventoryRuleAgent\InventoryRule\Policies\{06D80F00-9D63-4714-ACD7-CE980E8C139A}] "Interval"=dword:000000f0 "OnlyReportInventoryIfChanged"=dword:00000001 "SendInventorySummary"=dword:00000000 "DoNotRunInventory"=dword:00000000 "ImpersonateInteractiveUser"=dword:00000000 "GS"="VBOX-ATRS1" "SG"="{06D80F00-9D63-4714-ACD7-CE980E8C139A}" "Name"="Default Microsoft Vulnerability Analysis Policy" "Hash"="MdcquTeunMeC4zX/VirSgQ==" "LastWakeup"=hex:e7,d5,c4,b3,6e,97,e3,40,00,00,00,00 "LastInventoryHash"="pRUooqcCkp8ZRj...

Thanks to the effort of individuals in the End Point management team we have the Single Rule Evaluator and Software Update Agent diagnostics available (see https://kb.altiris.com for details) to help with the core PMS Inventory rules: IsApplicable and IsInstalled. However lately I have found some problems not related to both rules, but a little upstream from them: namely in the Software Release and Service Pack inventory rules. So what are these rules for? They, much like the IsInstalled (let shorten this to IIR for Installed Inventory Rule) and AIR (Applicable Inventory Rule) are defined in the Inv_Inventory_rule data class table. So they also contain an InventoryRuleXml entry and are handle by the Inventory Rule agent on the managed computers. What differs though is that both of these rule sets (and resulting data classes) are then used by Patch Management Solution to create the intersect collection, which is like a SQL inner join between the user select collection (...

On a windows master/media it is simple to extract the output of the NBU support command and is actuallly very useful for documenting a system.    What about Unix can the output be simply extacted by unix utilites ?

Hello,   I am setting up DS web console so I can have our Techs deploy sw packages that I created in DS, but I am not sure where I set the permissions for the web console. They can get to the web console but receive permission denied and cannot veiw anything on the page at this point. The Techs have rights to DS to create and deploy images but they cannot get into webconsole and I have not found any docs on this yet. Currently the only one whom can use web console are Admins in Altiris DS & NS.  If you have any info on this it would be greatly appreciated. TekGrl

The zip file containing the installation files for SWV contains a pdf document "Symantec_Workspace_Virtualization_6_1_SP1_User's_Guide.pdf" that describes how to use SWV. In this document, in the technical reference section there is a table (Table 6.1) that contains - at least for me - confusing information. It's pretty clear what the "Parameter" and "Associated Flags" headers refer to. But what's with the "n o i t p"-header.

The Admin guide has a list of Volume Status descriptions but some of the listed statuses are not what they appear in vxprint output. I have managed to simulate some States/Status but not all. For example, for the "Healthy" status, vxprint output will show "ACTIVE". Similarly for the "Degraded" status, vxprint output will simply show "-". In the below output sample, "Failed" status is accurately shown as "Failed". Diskgroup = OTL2K801-Dg0 TY NAME         ASSOC        KSTATE   LENGTH   PLOFFS   STATE    TUTIL0 PUTIL0 v HarddiskVolume2 -            -       8192     -        -       -       - v...

What is Symantec Workspace Profiles (SWP)? Why did Symantec release SWP? What are the advantages of SWP? How does SWP work? What is the architecture of SWP? These and many other great questions are answered in the attached PDF.

Hello, I'm an ESM beginner and I quickly found how to make it work and how to use it. But now I'd like to customize it by creating customized templates and policies (for Windows, AIX and/or Solaris checks). Symantec documentation only says :   - double-click the template to open the Template Editor,   - specify row information, including any sublist information that is needed,   - click Save and then click Close. Unfortunately, no documentation to explain "row information, including any sublist information that is needed". So, I can't succeed in creating a simple template that verify if a file exists (with Green report if it does, and Red report if not). So, I don't specifically need a solution for that example, but I need documentation on modules, templates, checks, or (better) course support. Thanks for your answers.

I purchased Norton Ghost 12.0 last year, with the hopes that it would be the software I could use to do what I need. Here is my goal. I want to create an image of a laptop, which I plan to use to deploy across my organization.  This is to help speed up my time to deliver notebooks to the field, by managing my time through effective imaging techniques. I want to create a bootable Ghost disk, so I can create a ghost image of my laptops, and save them to a USB or network device. To do the network device, I know I need to load NIC drivers, yada yada yada.  I am not concerned with this so much right now, what I am concerned with, is being able to even start, so that I can boot to a Ghost disk, and create the image even to a USB device. I boot from the Norton Ghost 12.0 disk, and it doesnt appear to give me the option to create an image. From what I can tell, maybe I am using the wrong version of Symantec Norton Ghost. Do I...

Can anyone tell me what the reason was for the release of version 'A' of RP2 for sfha-sol_sparc-5.0MP3? All I can find in the README (https://vias.symantec.com/labs/vpcs/vpcs/patchinfo...) is this note: “This patch obsolete sfha-sol_sparc-5.0MP3RP2” ALSO , the 'Read This First' does not contain a patchadd section for Storage Foundation for Oracle. I've tried to match the patches listed in table 1-29 with all the lists on pages 63, 70, 86, and 99, but none of them match. (I found the updated patchadd list in the LBN TechNote, but that's only for SF). Seems that not a lot of thought was put into the ReadFirst doc - the VxVM patch (122058-12) is listed in all the sections, but this requirement is only listed under the RAC section: "If you are installing patch 122058-12 on Solaris 10 Update 5, you must also install patch 128306-05 or higher." Surely users that do NOT have RAC installed will not read these sections of the manual? I have posted feedback to LBN...
