We are running Back up exec server edition 12 on a Win Server2003 R2 on a very old server.
I am planning a server upgrade and have a few questions.
I purchased one good new server (Dell R710). Is there any compatibility issues that I should be aware of?
Will Back up Exec 12 run on Server 2008 64 bit or would Server2008 R1 or Server 2003 R2 be better?
Will Microsoft Hyper V on Server 2008 R2 cause issues?
Do you have a migration plan for me to follow?
I run Symantec 11.0.4 End Point Protection on server and desktops. Any issues with this program?
Any program compatibility issues I need to be aware of?
Worried!

Dear Sir/Madam,
We bought 15 HP T5540 Terminals last month. These terminals all run Windows CE 6.0.
The problem is that when we put the terminal on, it register’s itself on the Altiris Deployment Server, (which we reinstalled with DP6.9 SP3). The Deployment server then upgrades the Altiris Agent to version 6.9.430, and after that I cannot manage it anymore.
The strange thing is that when I remove the Agent installer from the Deployment server and reimage the Thin Client so it gets it’s default CE installation (Latest image from HP.com website) and default agent (6.9.274 I believe) it runs fine and I’m able to send it reboot requests etc.
(the Deployment server however keeps creating an Agent update task which cannot run because I moved the source files).
After I move back the source files the Agent get’s updated and I cannot manage it anymore.
Then I tried a terminal with CE 5.0, this is a T5530 because the T5540 doesn’t...

My client purchased Symantec Endpoint Small Business suite.
Thus all client workstation have the Symantec backup client.
They would now like to both backup their Server and additionally have a central management backup console to manage backups within their environment.
Please indicate what are the licenses needed to backup the server and also to have a central backup console to manage all backup clients on the network.

I am having a problem connecting to the local server in BE 8.6 while the remote agent service is running...
We are running BE 12.5 on a Win 2008 box in our HQs. (machine 1)
We pushed the remote agent onto a remote win 2000 Server box and have had no issue. (machine 2)
We currently would like to be able to back up locally (with the BE 8.6 which is loaded on the server)
While the remote agent (service) is running on the machine 2, we have tried to schedule a job in BE 8.6
Trying to attach the media server, we "error out". "can not connect to media server press F5"....
With the remote agent (service) not running it connects fine and we have no issue (beside we would like to be able to back up certain sensative files remotely. to machine 1.
Is there a way with our current scheme to be able to back up both locally as well as remotely?

This script will check the character set of an Oracle database to ensure that it is compatible with Symantec DLP 10.
To run it, you must be able to log in to SqlPlus as the DLP Oracle user, traditionally named "protect".
1. Extract the three script files from the archive, leaving them together in one directory.
2. Open a command line window and change directory to the directory containing the scripts.
3. Launch SqlPlus and log in as the DLP Oracle user.
4. Type: @checkcharset_DLP_10.sql
The script will display on the screen the name of your character set, and a message confirming whether or not it is compatible.

Some quick info on the setup I'm running:
-GSS 2.5
-Dell PowerEdge SC1430 running Windows Server 2003 R2: host to DHCP, TFTP, PXE, and GhostCast servers (following the SolarWinds TFTP tutorial).
-Cisco Catalyst WS-2980G 80-port switch.
-WinPE-512 (w/ deploy anywhere) images are pulled from the server via PXE.
-This is an isolated setup, completely free of any outside networking influence, completely dedicated to the purpose of ghosting.
The problem:
-The ultimate goal of the setup was to have the ability to multicast to 10 laptops.
-Adding the switch in between the server and client causes a 10030 when connecting (after entering session name), which does not change for UC/MC/DC.
What's been tried:
-Swapping the expensive switch for a dumb switch (no change).
-Reconfiguring switch to default settings (stopped PXE from pulling a DHCP address at boot up).
-Removing the switch and running a patch cable from server to client (100% successful unicast).
I would be quick to blame drivers in...

In the 'New Features' section about BESR 2010, I see:
"Granular Restore Option – now included with the core product at no additional costRestore granular items such as Exchange email, SharePoint documents or files and folders in seconds from a single interface."
Is this option still limited to only being able to back up only a single-server farm, as it was in 8.x??
This feature is only useful if it can back up a multi-server Sharepoint farm, the commonest setup.
Unless there's some magic in BESR 2010 that I don't yet know about. We have not yet received our upgrade announcement etc.
Thank you, Tom

Hello All,
Wow, things have changed since I last used the Wise forums! Just a brief background. I worked for a co. for two years, but due to economic hard times, I was let go last January. However, I was lucky enough to be called back so I'm working with their installations again.
Now, onto my issue(s)/question(s)...
They have been receiving calls that their current installation is not running properly/to completion on the new Windows 7 OS. Unfortunately, since today is my first day back, I haven't gotten any specifics nor have I been able to log the install yet. Anyway, I'm currently using Wise Installation Studio 7.3.0.250 and was wondering if there is a newer version that creates installations that might be more Win 7 friendly.
Again, I'll need to get more details on my end, obviously, but I just wanted to maybe get some info on installation problems that may be out there involving installations that may have been created with this version of...

Hi,
I've observed some weird behaviour when installing SWV and Wise Installation Studio on the same machine.
What I want to do is create a setup.exe that contains the Workspace Virtualization Agent in runtime mode. For this I need to use Virtual Package Editor, which is part of Wise Installation Studio. To test this, I wrote a console program that reads the DWORD registry value HKLM\SOFTWARE\virt_test1\mykey. I did the following tests on two Windows XP SP3 virtual machines, one English and one German.
Test 1
- install Wise Installation Studio
- create setup.exe
-> works
Test 2
- install Wise Installation Studio
- install SWV
- create setup.exe
-> does not work; the program can't read the registry value (RegOpenKeyEx() fails)
Test 3
- install SWV
- install Wise Installation Studio
- create setup.exe
-> does not work; the program can't read the registry value (RegOpenKeyEx() fails)
Is this a known problem? Can anyone reproduce the behaviour? I can upload the files...

Anyone looking for Scan Engine support on RedHat 64-bit may soon get their wish granted. I got a webcase recently and it was escalated to backline who have said they put in a feature request for Scan Engine to get certified on 64-bit version of RedHat Enterperise Linux (RHEL). Currently we support 64-bit SuSe Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) and Windows 2003 and 2008 64-bit environments.
Be advised this could still be 6 months or more down the road since 5.2.6 is most likely already finished and this is something we might see in 5.2.7.
Watch this document for updates:
Title: 'Is Scan Engine 4.3.x, 5.1.x, or 5.2.x is supported on a 64-bit Redhat Linux operating system?'

Hi,
I'm trying to install Windows Media Player 9 in an application layer on Windows 2000 SP4. SWV with admin is installed and works. Installing WMP9 into the base OS works as well. When installing into an application layer the install progress bar hangs at 55 %. I tried single capture, global capture and running the setup from a captured cmd.exe. Always the same result. Is this a known issue? I couldn't find anything in the forums. Searching the knowledge base at https://kb.altiris.com/, I just found mentioned that installing Windows components is not supported. Is this still the case? Is WMP considered a Windows component?

Hi Guys, Girls
I recently had to install SEP on a 64-bit Vista machine. I noticed that the right-click “scan for viruses” feature was not available.
Now I understand that SEP loses functionality in a 64-bit environment but I would appreciate it if someone can explain to me why this isn’t available and why it can’t be implemented.
Thanks

This week, Symantec participated in the 5th Annual IT Security Automation Conference held in Baltimore from October 26-30. This event is jointly sponsored by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), National Security Agency (NSA), Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The event brought together some of the leading organizations in government and industry seeking to address the basic challenge a common approach to securing government environments and information. And while the notion of common security standards isn’t new, the amount of initiatives that have complicated this area seems to be growing exponentially. The conference touched on a number of top IT initiatives that provide the top challenges and drive the most important security initiatives in government today:
Cloud Computing

Hi,
Do we know how well CMS 6 will get along with Helpdesk 7? (apart from the fact that Helpdesk prob needs its own box being 64bit and 4 gig ram)
I have a client who is looking to purchase Helpdesk 7 but only upgrade to CMS 7 in the next 4-6 months time...

Hi all,
I am mucking around with Windows 7 at work and trying to install the remote console for backup exec 12 so I can manage the backup server from my desktop without remote controlling the backup server.
So far as I can tell I cant install the remote console because it warns about not being compatible.
Has anyone encountered and beaten this issue by chance?
Hmm.. I like windows 7 a whole lot less since using it at work.. :S
Cheers!

Im trying pin down a problem getting Endoint 11.0.5 running with the Citrix Provisioning Server 5.1SP1 client on W7 x64. The Symantec Management Client service is failing to start even though its set to start automatically.
The event log lists:
Error 7019, The Symantec Management Client service depends on a service in a group which starts later.
Error 7018, Detected circular dependicies auto-starting services. Check the service dependecy tree.
I checked all its dependencies and all are set to start automatically and all where already started.
If I install Endpoint 11.0.5 without the PVS client and reboot, it appears to work correctly. If I install the PVS client and boot locally, the Symantec service fails to start correctly. To be clear, just having the PVS client installed causes the problem, it is still a local OS at that point.
Even I disable both the PVS service and the Provisioning Service software that runs via the Run Key...

The purpose of this article is to provide a method of changing the Security Identifiers (SIDs) of dual-boot machines using the Ghost Console. This article assumes the version is Ghost Solution Suite 2.5.
The Ghost Console is normally able to change the SID of a machine during a Clone Task through the use of the Ghostwalker utility. When the Clone step is selected in a task, the Clone tab will be present and allow you to check a box at the bottom of the page to tell the task to use Ghostwalker to change the SID. Here is a picture:
It should be noted, however, that this process will only work for single-boot machines. To use Ghostwalker via the Ghost Console for dual-boot machines, a different method must be used.
The Ghost Console will allow you to transfer files to a client machine and execute non-Ghost commands (or Ghost commands in a non-standard way). In this case, we will be transferring Ghostwalker to the client and running scripted commands to tell it to change the SID on...

On our machines, which carry Agent 6.9, we are now testing also with agent 7.
however, on some machines it gives an error, and uninstalls itself due to some installpath it cannot find (When will symantec people learn to program useful error-messages?).
Only way around this is to uninstall the old client, clean the registry from Altiris, and install the new client, followed by the old one (Altiris 6 is still our production environment).
Why don't I get an error in Altiris 7 that the install was incorrect? I only get errors when pc's aren't available, but not installing an agent is the same as not working, and therefor should return an error.

Ok, bear with me a here, as I am fairly new to backing up data to this extent.
I have 8-10 servers that I want to backup with approx 2TB of data.
I currently have a server with Legato installed, but the ony guy who knew anything about this software has left the company.
What I want to backup
1x file/print
1x DC (would like AD recovery options)
1x Exchange 2003
1x Exchange 2007 (both exchange boxes need to have mailbox recovery)
5x application servers (non sql, non oracle)
I have a tape device pool of 2 Ultrium LTO2 drives, currently we have legato installed and the only guy that knew anything about legato software has suddenly left the company (nothing documented) and the only backup software the rest of the team have in depth knowledge of is backup exec, its used at pretty much all our remote sites (circa 15) where they just back up the onsite file/print servers, but we have a 6 year data restore policy for financial reasons (being the EMEA region head office), so I dont want to...

Im recieving an authentication error when trying to install a deployment console on a windows7 box. I have 3 technicians that need consoles deployed to their machines so that they can distribute tasks.
When trying to install the console on a remote workstation I get the following errors:
When using a domain adminstrator account to deploy the console I get an error message stating "Please make sure that the username and password you supplkied has Administrator rights on the remote machine."
When using a local administrator account to deploy the console I get an error message stating: "Error authenticating user local\user on %computername%. Please check your username and password before continuing. You may already be connected to the computer with another user name or password.
Anyone have success in deploying a console to a windows7 machine?

Hello,
I'm trying to use the Workspace Virtualization Agent in combination with Wise Installation Studio and one of the target platforms is Windows 2000. I had some problems getting this to work. One of them is that SWV 6.1 SP1 does not install on my Windows 2000 SP4 virtual machine. I ran the installer Software_Virtualization_Agent.msi from the command line and had it write a log file. It seems like there is a custom action that fails because a DLL can not be loaded. Here's an excerpt from the log file:
