Hi, I recently trialled the Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery Management Console application that allows you to manage multiple servers running Backup Exec System Recovery (Version 8.0). We found it was not really that reliable and decided to un-install the Management Console and also the client software installed on each server. The problem now is that the Backup Exec System Recovery application still says that it is being managed by the Management Console, if you try to edit a scheduled back up the following message is shown: The backup job Drive (Backup name) is controlled by a central management system. Contact your system administrator. So we are un-able now to edit / ammend existing backup schedules. I have removed the Backup Exec System Recovery Management client software from each server and have re-booted each server, and still cannot control / ammend our backups. Any ideas?

I was offered a free download of Symantec through my graduate program, and downloaded it onto my boyfriend's HP laptop since I have a Mac and no security issues.  He has not been able to connect to the internet since.  I have tried every method of troubleshooting I can think of, but I'm just not that PC-savvy.  Unfortunately neither the guy at Radioshack (where he bought the computer) nor HP tech support can figure out the problem.  Both are blaming it on symantec, so I uninstalled it for him.  He still can't get online. I've turned his firewall off, that did nothing, I turned it back on that did nothing.  I've restarted the computer after each attempt to change whatever settings, but to no avail. The most frustrating thing is that he is connected to our wireless network and the connection is strong with all bars- he just can't get the browser to connect to the internet.  The guy at RS told him to re-install his browser- but how?  He...

We are using Altiris console version 6.0.6074(SP 3 + R8).  We moved a Data Class to new location and cannot move back to original location.  Moved it from Contract Data Classes to the User Defined folder but when we try to move back the original folder is not available in the Move Item - Web Page Dialog box.  This moving process messed up the Resource Type - Software Purchase.  Now when we try to create a new import rule and point to the Resource Type with the data class we moved we get a server error below.   Server Error in '/Altiris/Connector' Application. Runtime Error Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine. Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please...

On a windows master/media it is simple to extract the output of the NBU support command and is actuallly very useful for documenting a system.    What about Unix can the output be simply extacted by unix utilites ?

Hi, I've been using Norton Ghost 14 since soon after it came out to back up my Windows XP Pro PC onto an external hard drive. A couple of weeks ago, I started getting the following error: " Norton Ghost             The type of errors encountered indicate that this hard disk drive is about to fail. It is             recommended that this drive be replaced soon. To ignore this error and backup this             drive, select "Ignore bad sectors during copy" from the advanced options in the Drive              Backup Wizard.             More Help on the Web                       ...

I have installed Backup Exec for Windows Server 12.5 on our Windows 2008 domain controller and we setup all our jobs. We did a test backup and it worked fine but last night we run a baseline backup of the C and D drive of our domain controller and it failed after 7.35 minutes with the error e0008445 - The media operation was terminated by the user. Looking through the job history it appears that it completed all the tasks but failed after verifying. All the files are on the NAS that we are using to backup to but when you go to the restore option there is nothing in there. Any suggestions as to what the issue may be?

We have three Dell Latitude E6500 laptops that were given to the school district that I work for. We are trying to ghost them and we get an error (Internal Error 36000) everytime we try ghosting. We start up ghost and do a peer-to-peer one being the master and the other being the slave. After we slect the drives and click to start the ghosting we get the 36000 Error before the disk information is even sent. Any ideas on what maybe going on? Here is the error log that we are geting. ********************************* Date   : Thu Oct 15 12:36:52 2009 Error Number: (36000) Message: A GeneralException occurred Version: 11.5.0.2113 (Apr 22 2008, Build=2113) OS Version: DOS v7.10 Command line arguments: -FNI Active Switches :        AutoName PathName            : DumpFile            : DumpPos       ...

We're using Backup Exec 10d SP4, backing up 8 servers (including the server with BEX installed on it). A remote server, which does have a BEX agent, has 3 SQL instances on it using different logon credentials. Instances "CP" and "PM" are fine with the same "domain\backup" user that has rights to the server, so they are not specifically given a different logon account than the server has in general. But the third instance, "PROFXENGAGEMENT", has a unique logon provided by the software vendor that wrote the application, so we have specifically input this Logon Account with the name "sa" and the password we were given. When I click the "Test All" button, I get "Successful" on the server and all three SQL instances. But when I run the job at night, I get the following error: JOB COMPLETION STATUS Job ended: Monday, October 12, 2009 at 11:02:49 PM Completed status: Completed with exceptions...

For some background, I have had trouble with some annoying "Unexpected server error. ErrorCode: 0x10010000" events.  To attempt and fix this issue, I ran the Management Server Configuration Wizard (which I saw, in various forums, could remedy this error code).  I went through the wizard and selected embedded database (since this is what I have always used for my database) placed a password for my database and left the rest of the settings at the default.  Now when I attempt to login to the Management Console, I get the message "Failed to connect to the server" and I cannot do anything.       When I try and run the Management Server Configuration Wizard again, I cannot get past the place where it asks me for my port that the embedded database server uses.  I have tried the various ports that I thought it should be and left the default.  How do I find out the port that my...

Hello, I have read the previous posts concerning the creation of these temp files when explorer is open and a new virus definition update is scanning.  My problem is a little more difficult. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 32 bit with Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition v. 10.2.1.1000 On boot, the Auto-Protect window opens saying that it has attempted to clean a Bloodhound.Exploit.196 from  "emp/DWH246.tmp"    The problem is, the computer crashed at some point while this file was being cleaned.  So I believe the file was in a C:/Temp or D:/Temp directory, but now is only shown as "emp/" in Auto-Protect and the Risk History with no drive letter.  Because of this, I cannot clean, restore, delete or do any actions because SAV cannot find the non-existent directory. I do not think that this is actually being picked up on the boot scan, so advice as to how I can manually edit or delete the SAV file where the...

Hello, I’m new to the forum and I would say I’m a novice or a step up from Novice with Backup Exec... For the past several months I’ve been experiencing an inconsistent error with one of my remote backup machines. The dreaded "Unable to attach to a resource." I’ll go several days with successful backups and then I get this error. Sometimes I’ll have several days in a row with this failure. I’m really at a loss on what to do or try next. I’m not even sure whether it’s a backup issue or a Windows issue. Job ended: Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 4:18:25 AM Completed status: Failed Final error: 0xe000848c - Unable to attach to a resource. Make sure that all selected resources exist and are online, and then try again. Hi, I'm having alot of problems ghosting my Compaq 615 laptops, the original problem was using a boot CD ghost.exe failed to load, timing out after approx half an hour, and so far have been unable to save an error log because we use CDs, I've tried all versions of boot disk OS and had little results so have moved onto PXE boot which works fine expect... My problem lies in the PXE boot, it launches ghost.exe and gets an IP address from DHCP great! However when I go into GhostCast (or local) it fails to find the hard disk giving the error "No valid source drive to choose (11032)" and returns to the ghost menu. I have tried modifying the SATA mode to ACHI / IDE, using ACHI mode i can see the hard disk however will cause corruptipn to the Win XP OS im taking an image of, IDE wont show a valid hard disk. I have tried to make an error file by using CTRL + C however I cant work out how to get it off the client machine to post it. Any ideas are greatly appreciated Chris...

I'm a bit of a newb with Ghost, so if there's a simple How-To out there and you'd rather I look at it, just point me in the right direction.  Thanks. OK, here's what's going on.  I'm trying to do a 'remote client install' of Ghost on a new PC.  However, when I try to connect, I get: Failed to install:  \\ULYSSES (20): Add logon right: Error when opening security policy - the computer might be running Windows 95, 98, ME or XP Home, or the specified account does not have sufficient administrative rights on that machine. I've checked the following: * The account I'm using is an administrative account.  It has a password. * The PC uses Windows XP Professional SP 3. * The Windows firewall is turned off. * Antivirus is up-to-date (SAVCE 10, by the way). * There are no other firewall/antivirus programs on the machine. * As far as I know, the local security policy on the machine has not been tampered with,...

Dear every professional here, Im using the monthly backup tape to backup every month and using daily backup tape to backup everyday. (actually all the monthly and daily backup tape are same, there are IBM LTO just label are different) p/s: This backup method had run almost 2 years. But yesterday my backup job is fail to backup (my job list only have this backup job which is for monthly and daily backup), the backup tape im using is monthly backup tape. So, i thought is backup tape problem and i manage to create a new backup tape. After created a new backup tape, i tried to backup but fail. (previously i had face this issue, but after i create new backup tape, problem solved) Very weird, i tried using the daily backup tape but it's success to backup. I had created 4pcs NEW backup tape, all fail to backup. I had using cleaning cartridge to clean the IBM backup device many time. If all the backup tape is fail to backup, i have...

Hello, I am having very consistent failures on some of my backup-to-disk jobs. The exact error/failures are copied and pasted below, but essentially the jobs are failing because "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process". The unique part about my environment is that my backup-to-disk folder (i.e. backup destination) is enabled for Microsoft DFS replication... that way, we're able to push backup-to-disk data offsite using throttled replication. The backup jobs that fail most often with these errors are SQL backup jobs, but the failures are not limited to SQL -- we'll get occasional backups with other file/folder backups as well. I've used Sysinternals Process Explorer to watch the B2D file handle to find out what process is "grabbing" the backup to disk file. It turns out that Backup Exec is releasing its lock on the B2D file, and the DFS Replication service (dfsr.exe) is immediately copying the file to its...

Good afternoon, I recently uninstalled a Symantec antivirus client on a computer that is a hand-me-down from a friend, running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. After uninstalling the program, I now have multiple blank popup windows that occur infrequently - there is no information inside and the taskbar shows a completely blank icon except for the Symantec logo. Multiple reboots have been unsuccessful in remedying the problem. The program is also still listed in the Programs option in Control Panel. I don't have any of the original install discs so I can't reinstall/remove it again to see if that corrects any issues. Any advice from anyone who has dealt with similar issues? Thank you in advance for your time and assistance. Best, Jake

Recently, backup jobs have started failing with this error message: Job name : Weekday Backups Job type : Backup Job status : Failed Job log : C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\Data\BEX02240.xml Server name : SPOT Selection list name : Daily Backup Device name : CERTANCE 1 Target name : CERTANCE 2 [0001..0005] Media set name : Weekday Backups Error category : Resource Errors Error : a000fe1f - The device cannot be found. As far as I know, nothing else has changed about our backups. I tried to update to service pack 5, hoping that would fix the problem.  I don't get any error messages when I do.  But when I check "About-> Help" in Backup Exec, it still says I'm using version 9.1 rev 4691

Hello, I am hopeful that this forum will provide some insight into this problem. Backup Exec 11d on Windows Server 2003 R2 sp 1 I have not been able to resolve the failure of my LTO drive to successfully complete backups, or even inventory a tape correctly ( I get a bad media message on inventory for every tape I have tried). I run a cleaning cartridge weekly.  Once the error began I purchased and used a brand new cleaning cartridge, with no luck.  Currently the messages I am recieving are as such: Errors began with this message in the Job Log: Job ended: Monday, August 31, 2009 at 9:46:20 PM Completed status: Failed Final error: 0xe00084ee - An invalid command was sent to the storage device. I hope someone can help   I am trying to restore from a ghost image on to a sata hard drive in an usb hard drive caddy using a laptop but for some reason the restore either gets to 45% complete or 65 % then stops. No error message or any warning at all and I have to shut down the pc and start again. I have to reformat the sata hard drive as the data is corrupted. I have got the ghost images on the laptop hard disk as for some reason the cd drive does not work when it is restoring could this be causing it I am not sure. The OS of the laptop is xp service pack 2   I have tried another laptop and the result the same. I have tried to restore it about 6 times now and have been very close to throwing it at the wall on several occasions. If you can help I would be grateful.
