Hello everyone, We had a great meeting on Nov 18th with Mark Salmon presenting a technical review of Veritas Cluster Server (VCS) and the associated VCS testing tool called FireDrill.  These are two really great products from Symantec that are definitely leaders in their space. I have attached the two (2) presentations to this message for you to download and review. Thank you again to Symantec for the excellent food and door prizes and  we hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season with Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner.  We will plan to meet again sometime around February next year to get everything off to a great start. And don't forget, UserGroup members get an awesome $400 off Symantec Vision registration, a $175 MGM Gift Card, and a limited edition Symantec Vision jacket!!!  Must register before March 12, 2010 and use the promo code: VISUG when registering. Sincerely, Joe Hayes Group Director Atlanta Storage & High...

We have a mixed Novell E-Directory/Microsoft Active Directory environment. We have approx 3,500 computers receiving updates from 2 SEPM servers and 3 GUP's. Our Novell computers are in a single workgroup. The Microsoft computers are in a single domain. Our naming convention doesn't do a great job of differing AD computers from ED computers.  If I click on a computer in SEPM I see the 'Domain or Workgroup' field under the 'General' tab. In the field I am seeing the 'Primary DNS Suffix of this Computer'. That can be found by right clicking on 'My Computer' and selecting 'Properties'. Then go to Computer Name->Change->More. This data is useless because it does not tell me if the computer is in my workgroup or domain. In the SEPM back end database there are fields for 'Workgroup' and 'Domain' and they have data in them. A Symantec engineer working on a case confirmed these fields to exist and have data in them. I am requesting both of these fields be added to the '...

Patch Management Add the ability to configure software update tasks to install ASAP after the scheduled install time. Currently, if a computer misses the schedule, it will not run  / receive the update. If the schedule is 2 a.m. and the computer is always offline during this time, the computer will never receive the patch. Cheers, Peter

We have a mixed Novell & Microsoft environment. Alot of computers. Close to 3500 if not more on two SEPM's and couple GUP'S for smaller sites. I checked out a Novell computer in one of my SEPM groups. I go to the 'General' tab. I checked out the entry for 'Domain or Workgroup'. What I saw was the DNS suffix. I should have seen the workgroup name since all Novell computers are in there. I then proceed to look at a MS computer. Again I saw the DNS suffix as opposed to the domain name. Is this a known bug? Because of how many computers we have it would be helpful to know which belong to a domain and which belong to a workgroup.

Why on earth has Symantec removed the ability for users to personalise notifications messages. Invaluable under 8.5, invisible under 12.5??

We are looking to enable the deletion of orphaned shortcuts. Before we do, I'd like to get an idea of where these shortcuts are. I know I can run my task in report mode and it will tell me how many orphaned shortcuts I have in the mailbox. But is there any way possible to also know where those shortcuts are in the mailbox? Thanks.

We would like to submit an enhancement request for the following (EV v8.0 sp2): To be able to input the "In Folder" folder search criteria in "Advanced Find" screen, in addition to browsing the structured vault archive.   We were able to to do that in EV v6.  Please let me know if you need additional information.     Thanks,   Joseph Chao Network Administrator

In Symantec Brightmail Message Filter 6.1.1 there is no way to determine the exact Antivirus definitions including revision number. This information is helping in troubleshooting a virus situation where you want to verify the Rapid release and Daily Certified versions running on brightmail Brightmail.

Hi, It could be a good idea to be able to convert symantec points with symantec products. I know that I would love to convert my points for Norton Internet Security 2010 It could also save Symantec money because a license doesn't cost to Symantec like Amazon money costs ;) Naor Penso

I have the program installed and setup with time and dates to run, but the services keep stopping by themselves. If im on the server 2 or 3 hours prior to the scheduled backup, it will run and complete successfully. If the server is left at idle all day, it will not run, and the following morning I have to restart all services in the back up exec program. This is somthing simple im sure, I'm just missing it. Any suggestions/help would be appreciated. Other notes Running windows server 2008 software. Have the power options on high performance have selected not to turn off hard disk, screen and also not to hibernate.

Hi I have a strict network Policy to follow, that all Network devices are on SNMP v3. After being told Altiris 7 would support this. I find that it only supports V1 and V2. Which for one supprises me as V3 has been the industry standard for years. So my question is, When will Altiris support SNMP v3. Or should i knock it on the head and look for another solution. Cheers

Symantec must develop virus signatures that recovers the original registry stored in PC. Almost all of threats changed registry which is very tedious to IT personnel to restore the original registry setup.

This idea is to prevent a NetBackup Master server upgrade from being a requirement in order to support a new client type. For example, it is very painful to have to upgrade all NetBackup masters to a new code revision (testing, Q/A, change procedures, outages, etc.) to support a new client type like Windows Server 2008 R2 or SQL Server 2008. If the NetBackup code was possibly more modular, a new client could possibly be created that would still function without a NetBackup master upgrade. This is not an apples to apples comparison obviously, but the idea is similar to how one can run Outlook 2007 with an Exchange 2000 server and have almost all functionality still of the Outlook 2007 client, but without some of the advantages of Exchange 2003/2007/2010 on the back end.

The premise of this idea would be to provide a function similar to VMware DRS but for NetBackup policy scheduling. This feature would provide an option to adjust the policy schedule load balancing to either fully automated or partially automated based on a sliding "star type" scale like DRS. NetBackup would automatically balance fulls vs incrementals (or differentails) between the different days of the week (very helpful for those users performing fulls+incremental or differential spreading the fulls between different days of the week). Today this is a completely manual juggling process to balance load. The feature would also allow certain clients to be excluded from the automated balancing of schedules (ie a client where the full absolutely has to run on a specific day of the week due to system impact) similar to how DRS allows exclusions. This idea has nothing to do with load balancing clients between media servers which already exists to some extent.

Symantec Partner Engage 2009, our annual North American partner conference, took place in early November in Orlando, Florida.  The theme of this year’s event was Unstoppable and more than 380 partners and ten media from North America joined us to hear Symantec’s leadership team discuss our focus—both from a corporate and channel perspective—and to learn about Symantec’s channel programs and opportunities for 2010.    Throughout the event, Symantec discussed the Four Rs of the channel: Revenue, Readiness, Reputation and Relevance. Partners were excited to hear about new readiness tools, like SymDemo, and new programs, including the Enterprise Security Specialization and enhanced Renewals Program, designed to help them drive revenue and maintain relevance with their customers.  Finally, we announced a new partner community to help foster collaboration and communication between Symantec and our partners. All of our new...

It would be beneficial when using the Managment Server Configuration Wizard to make update such as changine the SA password without having to re-enter all the information over again.  For instance, when you have custom ports or custom database names this information would have to be re-entered but it would be nice if the software could pre-populate that information.  This is requested by HP (John Scrimsher) and not currently available in RU5.  Please consider this enhancement request: thank you.

One of the great design decision behind the Notification Server design was to set it to run on top of IIS. In this manner the NS team didn't have to worry about scalability: this was all done by Microsoft thanks to the improvements made from IIS 4 to IIS 5 and now IIS 6 (IIS 7 is not yet in use for Altiris).   However one of the (minor) downside to the design is that there are a number of elements that are not necessarily clear or well known about the underlying architecture and configuration items.   So in this article we will review the components involved and some of the configuration items, from a workstation or package server agent all the way up to the client config manager objects.   Here is an overview of the elements we will review today (click to open in a new windows):       Starting from the client we know that the Altiris Agent communication interfaces are provided by the Notification Server on http or https using the IIS configuration (by...

In prior versions there was an option to shedule according to the days of week.  With this option you could create a schedule where one backup job could run the first week another on the second week and so on.  This made it possible to create backups using different media pools or with other options altered. I'm not sure what version this changed in but the only option you have under 12.5 is "Recurring Week Days".  Now this sounds the same but it doesn't actually work.  If you click the first week and choose Mon - Fri it doesn't take the days from the first week, it takes the days from the first 7 days.  This results in the first week worth of backups running into week 2 and so on.  At the very least this is confusing because from month to month you don't know what days each backup set is running on.  Even worse, when it comes to the last week of the month it sometimes overlaps schedules or missed days altogether. I can't really see why...

I'm attempting to create a package with all the features of SEP11 so I don't have to reinstall when my mangement finally decides to use them all. However, all I'm getting as part of the 'all features' default Client Install Feature Set is AV and Antispyware Protection, Network Threat Protection, and Proactive Threat Protection - no firewall, no app\device control, no intrusion detection. How do I get those features installed in the package? I am new to SEP11 (although I've used Symantec since version 7.6) so perhaps I've done something wrong on the initial install? I've just upgraded to RU5 and it's made no difference - still no sign of the missing features. I have over 500 clients already installed, with over a thousand left to go, so please don't tell me to reinstall (unless I won't lose everything!) Any (and all) help greatly appreciated. Gill
