I know just enough about this stuff to get by -- or so I thought. I'm moving from sbs2000 Premium to sbs2003 Premium on a new server. Also a new RD1000. Running SQL Server 2005. The OS is fully patched. I've loaded 10d and downloaded and installed SP4. Beserver just hangs when the system starts, saying "Starting". The event ID in the system log in Event Viewer is 7022 from Service CONtol manager -- "The backup exec server service hung on starting. Backup exec starts but many things don't work. If I go to Help / About BE..., it just closes.
Now when I installed, it wouldn't let me install to sql. It made me use MSDE. Said it wasn't a valid instance. Don't know if that makes a difference here, but don't know how to get around it.
I can kill the process in Task Manager. If I try to restart, I get a 1053 error. "THE service did not respond to the start or control...

I am currently running SAV Corporate Edition and 10.1.8.8000 Symantec System Center. When I select Tools/ClientRemote Install and drill down until I get to my domain name under Select Computer, I am not seeing all of the prospective clients that I should be able to see in my Windows 2003 Active Directory domain. If I can't see them, I can't push SAV to them. I've looked at my DNS and the machines that I want to push to are correctly listed in DNS. Any suggestions at this point would be welcomed.

All,
When launching the install, everything is proceeding normally and when nearing the end of the install this is the message I'm getting:
Starting the NetBackup Notification Service.
Starting the NetBackup database manager process (bpdbm).
The NetBackup daemon process (bpdbm) was not started.
Check the services configuration -- files, YP, NIS, or NIS+.
Enter <RETURN> to continue, "x" to exit.
Could this error be causing the jnbSA administration console from loading?
Thanks, Dave

We have a company where there are at least 25 sites, and not ALL newly imaged machines are going to be in the same place. I will list 4 sites.
New York
Los Angeles
Houston
Chicago.
I don't want them ALL on the same site, what I want is for them to report to their OWN GUP server.
What do I need to do to get Chicago clients to point to Chicago GUP's
New York to New York and so forth...
The machines will come here and Iwant to have these machines with SEP already installed. I have a package, but it will point them to a specific group. ALL of them wiill default to the New York group based on the package, what I want to do is to divide them accordingly, and report to their servers when they get to their respective sites.
The GUP's are not in place yet, but when they are, I want the clients to point to them. What is the best approach to take at this time?

Hello,
I am considering upgrading from our current MR4 installation to RU5 soon and was wondering if there are any consistant issues I should be aware of. I did a quick search of the forum and found several people had issues, but I am more interested in things that everyone has been experiencing either during the upgrade process or as a result of the upgrade process. I am hesitant to upgrade as SEP as we have it is the most stable is has been since we switched and I would rather not introduce new problems into the enviroment. Supposedly there are some fixes in the previous MP updates as well as RU5 that should fix the remaining issues we have been experiencing with the product.
I am eager to get feedback from the members.
Thanks.

I recognized something strange, which has been quite confusing for some of our customers. Actually the current version von Endpoint Protection (11 RU5) is published with two different version numbers. The packages, you receive through LiveUpdate are listed as 11.0.5002.0 in the Endpoint Protection Manager, but packages you create from other sources, e.g. downloads from Symantec’s fileconnect , are listed as 11.0.5002.333.
This fact makes it possible to import both versions into the Manager, if you received the packages through LiveUpdate onto your MR4 system and then upgrade it to RU5. After that you will see that four packages with the mentioned two different version numbers get listed under “install packages”.
Now, if you install the package with number 11.0.5002.0 onto a client, it gets actually also listed as installed version 11.0.5002.333. So the whole issue is just wrong information in the Manager, which the software cannot handle.
The problem is...

My organisation uses virtual machines that host several servers on each machine. As far as we've been led to believe, only the host machine needs SEP installed; the virtual ones will be protected by that as well. Is this the case or should we be installing SEP on every virtual machine and the host server? (I seriously hope not as the performance hit would be immense)
Thanks in advance
Gill

Hi,
I'm facing problems with installing V10.0.2 on one client with XP
in the installation progress when modifying the registry, the following error comes up
Error 1402. Could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\Snap-In\LotusNotes.
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personell.
i've checked the registry key, and the lotus notes key does not exist
can I export the key out of the registry of a similar client?
or do I need to create it manually - and if so, can you give me the key details
thanks for the support
Bert

I can't seem to figure out how to do this. I have searched for information, but most of it is for SEP 11. When I create an SEP install package from SEPM, neither SEPM nor SEP on the target machine prompt me for a drive choice. I looked at the config files to see if there was something I could tweak, but didn't see anything useful.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

(Pre-question: is there a better search than the single box labeled "Search forums"? I'd love to search just this forum but searching all forums rarely gets answers relevant here.)
I ship a product as a 64-bit merge module (also as 32-bit MSM but that's not at issue here.) Recently a customer is asking if they can use my 64-bit MSM in a dual-mode MSI, that is in a 32-bit MSI which includes 64-bit components. Is this likely to be possible? I'd always thought a 64-bit install required a 64-bit MSI, but the customer insists I'm wrong.
The customer says they can create a 32-bit MSI which includes 64-bit components. (The customer is also using WIS 7.) When they add my 64-bit MSM into their MSI, my files are installed to Program Files (x86) instead of to Program Files, so my custom actions don't find files where they expect. I can add code to check for WoW etc but don't want the hassle if this is an illegal way of doing things.
Thanks

We 3 Hyper-V hosts on Windows Datacenter 2008, 2 of which backup fine. The 3rd fails, throwing a VSS error for every virtual guest. The ~20 guests themselves do not show VSS errors or anything else of note in the event viewer.
The failing host shows constant VSS warnings in the event viewer:
Volume Shadow Copy Warning: The provider has reported a storage identifier that is not supported by VSS. Codeset: 1 Type: 5 Size: 4 NextOffset:...
