Hi,
I have virtulized a software package that our company is currently using and virtulized a new software update of the program. I was wondering if it was possible to run the two programs concurrently, as when I tried to do so the older version detected the new program and said it needed to be updated, also they use the same folders.
Is it possible to have the two virtulized apps in seperate layers whereby they can both run at the same time with no conflict, and if so, could someone explain how? I am currently using SVS 2.1 and am unable to update to SWV 6.1, so can this be done using SVS?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi,
I've observed some weird behaviour when installing SWV and Wise Installation Studio on the same machine.
What I want to do is create a setup.exe that contains the Workspace Virtualization Agent in runtime mode. For this I need to use Virtual Package Editor, which is part of Wise Installation Studio. To test this, I wrote a console program that reads the DWORD registry value HKLM\SOFTWARE\virt_test1\mykey. I did the following tests on two Windows XP SP3 virtual machines, one English and one German.
Test 1
- install Wise Installation Studio
- create setup.exe
-> works
Test 2
- install Wise Installation Studio
- install SWV
- create setup.exe
-> does not work; the program can't read the registry value (RegOpenKeyEx() fails)
Test 3
- install SWV
- install Wise Installation Studio
- create setup.exe
-> does not work; the program can't read the registry value (RegOpenKeyEx() fails)
Is this a known problem? Can anyone reproduce the behaviour? I can upload the files...

Hi,
I'm trying to install Windows Media Player 9 in an application layer on Windows 2000 SP4. SWV with admin is installed and works. Installing WMP9 into the base OS works as well. When installing into an application layer the install progress bar hangs at 55 %. I tried single capture, global capture and running the setup from a captured cmd.exe. Always the same result. Is this a known issue? I couldn't find anything in the forums. Searching the knowledge base at https://kb.altiris.com/, I just found mentioned that installing Windows components is not supported. Is this still the case? Is WMP considered a Windows component?

I have a layer with file system priority of 70. In this layer I have a file: C:\test.txt (which contains the following text: "layer").
In the base, I have a file: C:\test.txt (which contains the following text: "base").
When I start winword.exe (from the base, this application hasn't been virtualized) and open C:\test.txt ... I get the file which contains "layer".
However I thought because winword was running from the base, the base's files would have a "BASE OWNER" priority (i.e. 65.5).
Why is winword opening the file in the layer?

We are currently experiencing some problems with programs installed in the base modifying layers.
Process A: image is in the base
Process B: image is in layerB
process B
|
|__> Process A
When launching process A from process B, all modifications done by process A are saved in the writable sublayer of layerB. I realize this is by design. Is there any way to avoid inheritance of the layer priority list by process A? (other than putting the image of process A in the programignore reg value because this implies that process A can't see layerB)
Thanks,
John

Hi:
I have several questions and was hoping someone could help me out.
1. I see an SVS agent in both NS and DS. Which one am I suppoed to push out to my clients? Does it not matter? I have a training course book for NS and one for DS. Since DS has a chapter about SVS, I'm assuming this is the one to use?
2. Is there a step by step guide (not covered in my book) to virtualizing an application, then deploying the virtualized application to an Altiris client using DS?
3. All of our clients (that I manage) are public use computers. Any student can use any computer (we have about 7,000 students and over a thousand computers). We don't allow roaming profiles so when the student logs off of a machine, his profile is deleted. Am I going to run in to problems with SVS in my management scenario? I need all settings reset upon logon. I did see an Altiris paper on "Software Virtualization Solution 2.1 Logon Hook...

Hello,
I'm trying to use the Workspace Virtualization Agent in combination with Wise Installation Studio and one of the target platforms is Windows 2000. I had some problems getting this to work. One of them is that SWV 6.1 SP1 does not install on my Windows 2000 SP4 virtual machine. I ran the installer Software_Virtualization_Agent.msi from the command line and had it write a log file. It seems like there is a custom action that fails because a DLL can not be loaded. Here's an excerpt from the log file:
MSI (s) (40:C8) [11:18:02:062]: Executing op: ActionStart(Name=fslxRollbackInstallProductSecurity,,)

Hello,
My initial problem description seems to be confusing. Since I don't want to fry more brains than absolutely necessary I'll try to isolate all the problems I run into and describe them one by one.
I want to create a setup that installs my application and the workspace virtualization agent. According to the documentation, this is done using the Virtual Package Editor. So I launched it and created a setup that puts an executable on disk (C:\win32app\altiris_test1\altiris_test1_v2.exe) and inserts an entry into the windows registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\altiris_test1\mykey, value 42).
After adding a release and compiling it into altiris_test1_v2_Setup.exe, I run the installer. Afterwards, my executable on disk exists, but the registry key does not. How do I fix this?

Hello,
I'm evaluating Symantec Workspace Virtualization (or Altiris SVS or whatever the name is)
in combination with Wise Installation Studio for creating packages that install one or
multiple applications on a machine that does not have Workspace Virtualization Agent
installed. According to the documentation of Symantec Workspace Virtualization (file
Symantec_Workspace_Virtualization_6_1_SP1_User's_Guide.pdf) and Wise Installation Studio
(file VirtualPackageEditor.pdf) this should be possible.
Unfortunately, I'm not having much luck in getting this to work.
The test environment:
1. Windows XP SP3 on a decent machine (2 GB Ram), let's call it "HOST"
2. Windows XP SP3 Virtual Machine in VMWare Server, let's call it "XPVM"
3. Windows 2000 SP4 Virtual Machine in VMWare Server, let's call it "2000VM"
What I did so far:
- Installed Symantec Workspace Virtualization Agent with Symantec Workspace Virtualization
Admin (Version 6.1 SP1) on XPVM
-...

Hello,
I notice this strange behavior.
After creating my layer by the global capture method (on Windows XP), i try to suppress the folder [Windir]\Preftech from the read only files section.
This folder contains .pf files
The result is that SWV is on "time out" and the only way to take the control is to kill the task.
Even if i restart the machine this folder seems to be locked.

Back in August I wrote an article explaining how to virtualize Internet Explorer 7 & 8 with Symantec Workspace Virtualization (SWV) 6.1. In that article I mentioned that only by running IE6 from a layer could you successfully virtualize IE6. Now long time Connect users know that the only official installer for IE6 is one for pre XP SP2 which isn't a scenario that people want to have to deal with to be able to virtualize IE6 (and SWV isn't supported on that old of and XP build,) So many have been using 3rd party installers, which work for the most part, but some things are missing and some DLLs aren't registered properly.
(Note: The following information on virtualizing IE6 is provided "as-is" and isn't officially supported.)
When I was asked to look into virtualizing IE6 I took the approach that it had to be simple as I could make it and not require any 3rd party installers. It had to be capturable via something Microsoft provided to users. Through some trial and error I...

Hey friends and fans of Symantec Workspace Virtualization, formerly known as SVS…
SYS-CON has opened their Virtualization Journal “Readers’ Choice Awards” 2009 and this year Symantec Endpoint Virtualization Suite has been nominated for Best Application Virtualization.
Last year Symantec was proud to win this award, as well as “Best App Virtualization Solution” for SYS-CON’s West Coast event. It’s very cool to see our community participate and get this recognition. For many years the SVS IT community has been bringing virtualization technology benefits into server-based-computing and alternative desktops, but primarily into the mainstay of IT - traditional rich client computing environments.
As part of our Juice and Connect community, you’ve come from Altiris desktop management backgrounds, AppStream, with traditional and SaaS delivery models, nSuite in healthcare and SMB site support, and have used our products as the...

I think it would be very beneficial to have other items that can define what machine an app is provisioned to, rather than simply the user id. In an environment when people do switch machines from say a headquarters site to a DR site and you only want the streaming/virtualized app available at DR. You could set up 2 streaming environments, but then you also have to manage 2 environments. If you set up a nice load balanced system that covers many of your sites, you can manage everything think in a single place.
Since we already use LDAP and get user information, would it be possible to get computer information as well. So, if I only want to allow application X to be available for user Y on computer Z, that is the only computer the icons show up on. Currently, if I provision a user for a licensed app and they begin using it on their normal production machine, then they travel 15 miles down the road to a DR site, the app icons show on this machine...

I have a requirement to produce a gold disk of an ESXi server and am trying to find out if Ghost will do the job.
The physical server is a Fujitsu RX200 S5 with 1TB of disk space
The OS is ESXi v4 and it is hosting 3 virtual servers (all win 2003)
What I need to be able to do is take an image/snapshot of the host server containing the VM's, ideally on one or more DVD's so it can be restored to the imaged state by a non technical person!
Can anyone confirm that GSS 2.5 will enable me to do this
Thanks in advance

Hi peoples.
i am wanting to do what the manual says i should be able to do, that is attach my virtual center to the Altiris DS 6.9 sp3
so that all my VM's appear and can be managed etc....
however i put the details of the virtual center into the virtual center section in the DS, and i get the Virtual Machine menu appear in the computers section, however nothing is there, except my virtual center..
Any Ideas?
or has anyone been able to do this with DS 6.9 and vSphere 4?
Thanks in Advance

Hi All,
I've posted before about the slow boot ups we are experencing with our computers. I work at school and our teachers can easily have over 25 svs apps installed on their PC's. Now that SP1 has been released I'm hoping this will fix our slow "Applying Computer Settings" issues but I'm not hopeful. I've yet to try it as I only discovered on Saturday that it was released.
An idea that I tried on Friday was to install the SVS Trinket utility, disable all the SVS apps and then allow end users to activate and deactivate their apps as they need them. It's reduced the boot up times to almost zero (Applying Computer Settings only appears for about 5 seconds). Has anyone tried this method to speed up boot up times. I'd be interested to get peoples thoughts, especially if they know the svs trinket works fine with SWV 6.1 SP1.
As a idea how about implementing an svs trinket idea into the next release?
Regards
Leonard

Back in April I posted about how with SWV 6.1 would no longer ignore LSASS by default, meaning you could capture MSSQL and similar applications into a layer. With the release of SWV 6.1 a lot of people started complaining about long delay when logging into a domain. This was caused by SWV no longer ignoring LSASS.
With SWV 6.1 SP1 we've decided to ignore LSASS again so that people wouldn't see the login issue. So if, for some reason, you need to capture something that only worked with SWV 6.1 make sure to keep the installer because it might not capture in SWV 6.1 SP1.
We do have plans to eventually re-support the LSASS scenarios, but I'm not aware of any time frame for doing so.

I read about some interesting news coming from VMware World. The new VMware Player Release Candidate has many enhancements, but for sure the best of these new features implemented is the ability to create virtual machines. ''Til the previous releases VMware player was able only to run virtual machines, now you have the ability to create virtual machines.
There is also the OpenGL support and Aero supports for Windows 7 and Windows Vista guests.
The VMware Player is 90Mb and the download is free for all VMware registered users, otherwise you you'll have to register an account with VMware.
Read details on the VMware web page : VMware Player Release Candidate - October 2009
Here an extract from release notes:
- The ability to create Virtual Machines
- Aero support for Windows 7 and Windows Vista guests
- OpenGL support for Windows guests
- New User Interface including a Virtual Machine Library
- Windows 7 support (as a Host and Guest OS)
- Automatically download and install the latest...

Hello guys, it is me again.
This time I have a question concerning ghost and vmdk files.
The Problem:
A PC should be virtualized. The one in charge of that wants to make a backup, so he asked me for advice. Since I did not use the vmdk feature once here my question...
The Question:
Is it possible, to make an image in vmdk and let this image be played by the vmware player? Are there any further steps, I need to consider. I already read some post, that vmdk's cannot be played directly by any vmware-application. Is that correct?
The Gear:
An old Windows NT PC, Ghost Solution Suite 2.5 with latest update.

I need to konw what user context/permission set that the Ghost Solution Suite 2.5 file NGCTW32.EXE uses to perform the task of creating and setting up the Virtuiral partition.
I have 3rd party software that is blocking this application. Howevery i cannot assign permissions to the specific application, rather the user context that the application is utilizing.
