What are all the concerns while choosing a operating system for installing NBU? and What are all the advantages and disadvantages in windows and UNIX/solaris for hosting Net Backup Server? Kindly provide me the detailed view about this. Thanks.

We upgraded from NBU 6.5 to 7 without any issues except one.   When we go the client server and run jnbSA or jbpSA to create a new oracle database template to be used in a backup schedule it is greyed out and will not expand showing the database instances on that server.  The one server that still has 6.5 on it, this function works fine.  Have an open case with Symentac but so far no idea.  Yes the oratab file is correct and we have also verified with symentac that the $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libobk.so points to /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/libobk.so64.1 which is showing that is has been upgraded to 7 In previous releases when you upgraded the client software that had oracle you had to run an additional step to update the oracle client.  According to the upgrade documents with NBU 7 this is no longer applicable and you only need to update the client and it will update all associated software including oracle.   The environment is Sun Solaris 10 using...

I'm trying to find a support matrix from Symmantec for Solaris LDOMs.  Can someone point me in the right direction?  I just want to make sure we're running the appropriate revision and patch levels of VCS and VxVM.  Thanks in advance. - Joe

We've recently upgraded from 6.5.3 to 6.5.4 and we've added an additional Media Server into the environment (all Solaris based).  We are experiencing significant delays in starting jobs - Unix, Windows, SQL and Oracle/RMAN - and writing to disk or tape.  The example below is typical: 12 minute delay in granting resources and 15 minute delay is connecting.  With the prior version, these times were in seconds.  We've restarted our entire environment to no avail.  Any help would be appreciated. 03/03/2010 11:14:51 - requesting resource nburobot 03/03/2010 11:14:51 - requesting resource nbucore1.NBU_CLIENT.MAXJOBS.sqlmisp 03/03/2010 11:14:51 - requesting resource nbucore1.NBU_POLICY.MAXJOBS.sql-sqlmisp 03/03/2010 11:27:27 - granted resource  nbucore1.NBU_CLIENT.MAXJOBS.sqlmisp 03/03/2010 11:27:27 - granted resource  nbucore1.NBU_POLICY.MAXJOBS.sql-sqlmisp 03/03/2010 11:27:27 - granted resource  T01171 03/03/2010 11:27:27 - granted resource ...

I have 3 media server (2 HP-UX and 1 Solaris). Now I want to enable Advanced disk on these server, have question below: 1. Could HP-UX and Solaris share SAN storage? (My storage is EVA 4400,and all host connected on one SAN switch) 2. Since Advanced Disk read a mount point(and mount point must be the same on each media server), Can I set same file system and mount point (share a LUN) on these server? 3. Except of life cycle and load balance, any advantage of Advanced Disk?(especially of  vs. VTL) Thanks for any response!

Currently, RMAN doesn't have the ability to query the NetBackup catalog.  It would be nice if the NetBackup Oracle agent included a command that you could run to query the NB catalog to see what media is necessary for a restore, similar to the Preview Media in the Backup, Archive, Restore GUI.  The command should also return a media status field which would indicate if the media was currently available (loaded in the library). This feature would allow our DBA's to notify the NB adminstrator if a tape recall was necessary for a restore that they need to perform, rather than initiating the restore, waiting for it to fail and then contacting the NB administrator to recall the necessary tapes (which only show in the failed job in the Activity Monitor).

Hi all, Recently I was asked to perform a restore of a mdb (microsoft access) file. According to the client, the file is updated regularly (daily) but when I looked for it in order to start the restore, I couldn't find the file. To be more specific: I found an old file in the Full backup in the location specified by the client. I couldn't find the file in none of the incremental backups. We had been obtaining 100% successful backups for the last 14 days. Just one thing to add, all the backups end with status code 1. My application runs in Solaris 5.9 and the backup is performed on a Windows 2003 server. This is my first discussion, I hope i accomplish with all the posting rules. Thanks in advance. Mauro

A system administrator can create a Solaris Logical Domains (LDoms) server farm that allows for rapid instance provisioning, significantly less storage consumption, greater instance resiliency and true pooled storage across all instances regardless of their physical location by using Veritas Storage Foundation High Availability (SFHA). The attached guide demonstrates a set of reference architectures that can be customized to fit most implementations. An assumption is made that the reader understands Solaris Logical Domains and their architecture. It is also assumed the reader possesses a basic understanding of how to configure and manage Solaris Logical Domains technology using Solaris management tools. There is also an expectation that the reader is familiar with basic Veritas Storage Foundation HA product architecture and management utilities. Download the attached guide to learn more about how you can maximize your investment in an LDom Farm using Veritas Storage Foundation.

Hello I think I´m w/ a great problem in my hands there was a script ntpdate to automatically change the time using the AD server and stuff I don´t know why the time was set to 03/20/10 I have manualy  changed the server time  and didn´t note about the script that changed again to the 03/20/10 date, so netbackup runs for 3 days w/ that date.  now the date is ok Problem 1: Some jobs R not running automaticlly problem 2:  I think that I´ll have to "delete "  those backups that runs w/ wrong date. Problem 3: even the catalog backup isn´t running automatically (and it is set to run ever 2 hours) someone can help me please? That is a real problem isn´t it /?? Thanks for any adivice

This document provides a detailed overview of the VxVM device naming and reporting enhancements implemented in Storage Foundation 5.0 MP3 for Unix and Linux. Improving Efficiency with Device Naming Consistency As configurations in the datacenter scale up and more SAN devices and nodes have to be managed, there is a greater need for consistency and predictability in device naming. Higher consistency streamlines operations, facilitates troubleshooting and reduces the risk for configuration errors. Storage Foundation supports two device naming schemes – Operating System Native (OSN) names and Enclosure Based Names (EBN). The enclosure based names comprise of two parts; the enclosure name prefix and the device index suffix. For example, the EBN EMC0_19 for a SAN device presented from an EMC enclosure comprises two parts: The enclosure name prefix EMC0 that identifies the enclosure model (EMC) and assigns it an enclosure index (00) in order to differentiate between multiple...

Hi VxVM Engineering Team, Disk Groups rebuilds are one of the most common and very frequently done activity in Tech Support. One of the common problems we face is, if the LUN headers are corrupt and the LUN goes in "online invalid" state, we struggle to find DM to DA name matching. Most of the time it's a guess work based on "d" in c#t#d# from CBR. If customer wants exact 100% match, then 1] we look into VRTSExplorer collected before the problem 2] Then we do DM to LUN Serial Number mapping 3] Then we compare that to current LUNs' serial number and build the mapping. Most of the time, OLD VRTSExplorer is not available. So we could not find previous DM to LUN Serial Number mapping So if you could please introduce  serial_number and last_serial number as attributes of DM object that will be stored in private region, It will really healp us speedup the recovery. One the same lines, we struggle to get puboffset, privoffset, publen, privlen,...

I have a bunch of used LTO2 tapes that were created in a Windows Backup Exec 12 environment.  These tapes have been retired from that server, and I would like to be able to scratch/erase the tapes & use them again on a Sun server running Solaris9 and Netbackup 5.0. I ran a long erase on 2 of the tapes, and even though that appears to have been successful (both tapes are now in the 'Scratch Pool') when I try to run a backup job, Netbackup fails with an error stating that "there are no available media in the media pool".. even though  these 2 tapes are ready (at least they appear to be) in the Scratch Pool. Does anyone know a way to re-use LTO2 tapes on a Netbackup Server that were previously used on a Backup Exec server?  I'd love to be able to use all these tapes (which aren't that old) rather than purchase all new ones. Thanks.
