Greetings,
I am brand new to DS 6.9 and am preparing to install. We currently have 5 servers (Windows Server 2003 x64 Enterprise SP2) serving various purposes and 2 SANs. Each server has approx 70GB hardrives (12GB and C: and 58GB on D:) I have created 5 seperate 100GB volumes on our SANs. Our HD's came out of the factory partitioned 12:58 and needless to say our C: drives are running out of room. I have an application that can (in theory) resize our partitions without destroying the data or config but I obviously want to make complete backups before I try using it. A couple of questions:
1. Is DS 6.9 the appropriate tool for creating complete, recoverable backups that I can put on to my SANs while I try this resizing app?
2. Do I use DS as a manager (similar to SEPM) with which to implement jobs on my other servers?
Thanks in advance and...

I have sdlt2 tapes and some of them are not that old. I have checked other posting regarding the status 84. SCSI is working. Tape drive works with other tapes. I have cleaned the tape heads but I have several tapes that can not be used. How would I check the tapes before I commit them to the circular file? I have seen one article to update net backup to 6.5.4. I am running nbu 6.5.

Hi all,
our situation is the following: we have EV8 sp2 running with 2 different vault stores, one for exchange 2007 archiving and the other for file system archiving. Both vault stores are in the same vault store group with sharing level enabled within the entire group.
We are archiving exchange journaling in the same vault store used for user mailbox archiving.
Now we'd like to create a new vault store within the group and use it for journaling archiving, using more partitions mounted via network share for automatic rollover. Within this partinion we won't enable collactions.
When every year the partion rollover will occour we want to backup the closed partition to tape and the erase data from disk. In case we need to search in journaling archive for data not available on disk we can schedule a manual restore.
Is it possible to do that? How does EV works when a closed partition is currently defined and indexed but data has been removed from disk?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Andrea...

As it is now, it seems that EVSVR starts running, which is being logged in the logfile.
Then, you do not see anything in the logfile until it is finished.
It would be nice to get a message in the logfile every x (10?) minutes stating "Still busy, go have a coffee" or something.
Especially verifying/repairing larger stores/databases, it would be nice to know that it is still doing something.
Thanks,

Hello,
Iam testing the Desaster Recovery for an Windows Exchange 2007 Server running on a 64bit Windows2003 Machine.
Iam using BE 12.5.
I set up a testing Enviroment, with our Active Directory.
Then I set up a BE 12.5 (testing version) in this enviroment too.
Then I set up a Wind2003 64bit on a new machine for the recovery test.
I copied the IMG and B2D files containing the Image and SystemStae of our live Server to the Server in the testing enviroment.
Servername: srv-mail-01
Domain: whatever.mydom
-- examples of course :-)
I followed the steps unt No. 10 in this document for recovering the system State and so on...
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/236286.htm
Here is the problem now:
When I try to recover the server BE does not find it.
I guess because BE is looking for srv-mail-0.whatever.mydom and the "new" server wich si still in the workgroup has the name srv-mail-01 WITHOUT the domain?
File redirection seems not to work, its just coping the files to the server...

Hi,
So, we have our LU policy, specifiying multple GUP's (by name), this policy is linked to the generic desktop group - cxlients are currently on 3 different sites.
We have another test office - I have added the nominated GUP to the list of servernames on Rule 1.
I then rolled out the SEP client.
Since doing so, none of the clients have updated their defs (been a week now) - my guess is its trying to get from GUP and can't, as when we roll clients out to sites with no GUPs (for testing) they get their update from SEPM fairly quickly and stay up to date.
What should I check? Any ideas? Read it may work better putting an IP address isntead of name, but any tools I can use?
Thanks

Hi All,
I'd like to know if this is possible to do or not ?
I've got several partitions, namely OS 50 GB, Database 500 GB and Log 150 GB
not all of them is full, the total data usage is around 95 GB and I'd like to restore it into single partitions of 350 GB new RAID-1 LUN, How can i do this ?
since each partitions is saved into each own file and one file can only have one single destination ?
Thanks.

I have a collection of data that I am trying to filter within an Ajax Dynamic Update Panel Component
The first Drop down list has all of the 'Materials' in it
The second list has all of the "Manufacturers' that make that material. So far so good!
The third drop down list has all the 'Colors' of that Material made by the selected Manufacturer. Based on the selection in the 'Manufacturers' drop list
The Materials and Manufacturers drop lists have the 'Post Form on Value Change' set to True but for some reason the Color drop list is only reading off of the 'Materials' selection.
I have used a Dynamic Model to filter through the collection of items to appear on each drop list and the workflow is sound.
Is there a limit to the number of Drop Lists that can Post the form (or Panel)? Am I losing ThisForm data when I am Posting?
I have even placed Ascii labels under each Drop list to...

(Pre-question: is there a better search than the single box labeled "Search forums"? I'd love to search just this forum but searching all forums rarely gets answers relevant here.)
I ship a product as a 64-bit merge module (also as 32-bit MSM but that's not at issue here.) Recently a customer is asking if they can use my 64-bit MSM in a dual-mode MSI, that is in a 32-bit MSI which includes 64-bit components. Is this likely to be possible? I'd always thought a 64-bit install required a 64-bit MSI, but the customer insists I'm wrong.
The customer says they can create a 32-bit MSI which includes 64-bit components. (The customer is also using WIS 7.) When they add my 64-bit MSM into their MSI, my files are installed to Program Files (x86) instead of to Program Files, so my custom actions don't find files where they expect. I can add code to check for WoW etc but don't want the hassle if this is an illegal way of doing things.
Thanks

I currently have it installed on a Windows 2003 SBS and on Windows XP SP3 clients. Network performance has been decrease. I have turned of Autoprotect on the server. Any help is much appreciated.

I have a storage lifecycle policy with 2 storage destinations:
Backup - StorageUnit1 - Fixed Retention - 2 Months
Duplication - StorageUnit2 - Fixed Retention - 2 months
We plan to use this SLP to write images to a primary disk storage unit, then duplicate those images to a secondary storage unit offsite. The goal is to hold those images on disk for 2 months. My policy is tied to this SLP on the attributes tab of the change policy screen, however my schedules show a retention of 2 weeks (level 1). I am not able to change the 2 week retention because that part is greyed out on the change schedule screen.
My question is which retention will win out? The 2 months defined by my SLP or the unmodifiable 2 week retention that shows up when viewing my schedules?
Thanks,
Layne

If you are new to configuring Intel AMT or have a working solution for your environment - this article is not intended for you.
If you're a service provider, consultant, or customer with unique environmental constraints which have prevented the configuration of Intel AMT - keep reading.
If you have environmental security requirements for the Intel AMT configuration - such as Kerberos, TLS, 802.1x, etc - some information in this article may not be suitable for your environment. This article focuses on customers using a "Basic" or "Standard" configuration.
The Challenge of Out-of-Band Configuration: Establishing Trust
Much has been posted regarding the configuration of Intel vPro technology. Configuration of the technology occurs "out-of-band" from the operating system, and requires a trust to be established between two untrusted entities. The two entities looking to establish a trust relation are the Intel AMT firmware and the provisionserver...

Excuse me if this is answered elswhere; my limit for searching and poking sprawling forums and knowledgebases for answers is 1 hour.
It appears there is a fundamental change in the management software between these two versions. Version 5.0 doesn't seem to require an "Authentication Broker," but version 5.5 (included in the 5.0 VCS installation CD) does.
Is there any risk that the 5.0 VCS console is going to go unsupported? We'd like to avoid the time and hassle of implementing the broker (bloater?) service required for the 5.5 console. For the limited number of clusters we support it's absolutely not necessary.
Thanks in advance!

Hey all,
I'm in the process of setting up replication for my EV environment (8.0 for Exchange SP3). It's fairly large - over 15,000 archives plus journaling for the entire infrastructure, a total of 9 archiving/journaling servers, plus DA. We currently have our indexes/databases on EMC Clariion CX4 and our archives are on EMC Celerra.
We've engaged consulting from Symantec professional services and have been working with EMC to get a replication solution in place for off-site DR. We aren't planning on a hot-backup site with clustering - just having a DR envrionment available and replicating our disk that we can bring online if necessary.
Either way we cut it, we are going to need to do a migration of the Celerra, because we cannot make it work the way it needs to for consistent replication. EMC is trying to talk us into migrating ALL of our disk to the CX4 and using Recoverpoint to replicate to our off-site location. I can't find any...

Hello,
We have a permissions problem with a Exchange mailbox and the easiest solution would be to delete the mailbox and create a new one.
On the Exchange part, we'd export its contents to a PST file (incl the EV shortcuts), then delete the mailbox, create a new mailbox (not attach the old one) and import the PST. We wouldn't delete the AD user account.
But what's the best practice for the EV side if we want to keep transparent access to the old archive?
When we create the new mailbox, provision and enable it in EV, would EV :
- automatically link the old archive with the new mailbox;
- display all the old archived messages via AE in the new mailbox;
- allow all the PST-imported shortcuts to work?
Or would it create a completely new archive for the new mailbox and make all the PST-imported shortcuts invalid?!
Thanks in advance,
- Alan.

Hi,
I was wondering how to distribute client package from SEPM to clients, I know that I can add installation package to client group, but we have so distributed environment that Connection to SEPM is quite slow, and I don't want to install clients directly from SEPM because of this. It is possible to use http / https to download installation package from somewhere else, but we don't have web servers distributed to sites, and I'm looking for possibility to use dfs share to distribute package.
In other words is there any possibility to configure clients package to be downloaded from UNC path?
Kind Regards,
Jari Hotti

This idea is for a tool to be created that can be run against a NetBackup deployment (master/media/clients) to check for Symantec best practices and make recommendations where necessary (items like number buffers/size buffers/media and master server resource utilization/clients or servers with old software versions). The tool could even be integrated into a product like NOM to run on a regular schedule and so that it could alert when items become out of compliance/best practice.

Symantec Partner Engage 2009, our annual North American partner conference, took place in early November in Orlando, Florida. The theme of this year’s event was Unstoppable and more than 380 partners and ten media from North America joined us to hear Symantec’s leadership team discuss our focus—both from a corporate and channel perspective—and to learn about Symantec’s channel programs and opportunities for 2010.
Throughout the event, Symantec discussed the Four Rs of the channel: Revenue, Readiness, Reputation and Relevance. Partners were excited to hear about new readiness tools, like SymDemo, and new programs, including the Enterprise Security Specialization and enhanced Renewals Program, designed to help them drive revenue and maintain relevance with their customers. Finally, we announced a new partner community to help foster collaboration and communication between Symantec and our partners. All of our new...

I'm looking for a page that will break out each and every part of SEP, something like:
Network Threat Protection:
What is does
Policies that can be set
Recommended settings
And has the above for each of the parts of SEP.
In light of recent events I am going to be completely reconfiguring our SEP configuration and this would be very helpful.
Thanks!

Seriously, guys. Your guy yesterday was pretty good, but it was a bigger problem than he could fix so he escalated it, told me 10 AM Pacific to expect a call, I put it on my calendar and you never called.
So I called. Got put in the wrong queue (found that out 45 minutes later). Got put into what is purportedly the correct queue, but it's been another 45 minutes of listening to your hold music and still nobody answering.
Do you really hate your customers this much? Are you really that cheap? Seriously, I've taken to putting quote marks around the name of your service thus:
Symantec Enterprise "Support"
Hire enough staffers already. You aquired Veritas years ago and still haven't got your act together.

What is the proper way to delete PE 1.6 MSD drivers from DS 6.9 Bootdisk Creator? Can the folder just be deleted from: express\Bootwiz\platforms\Winpe\x86\Drivers\CUSTOM\I386\system32\diskdrivers? Or is there more that should be done? Also, when you add a txtsetup.oem file from within bootdisk creator, does it include support for all of the devices in the file, or only the one specified under [Defaults]?

3 actually:
1. what EXACTLY is kept in the SQL database SEM uses? Data only, or other items -
2. what determines the size of the SQL database SEM uses and what is typical for an entity with 28 servers, 350 computers, using packages to update/upgrade groups and 12 virus defs on hand.
3. is there anything that is recommended to keep the size in check?
Is 3 gig out of line?
(oops, sorry, I guess that's 4+ questions!)
