Wierd....Found that we can connect when manually running beremote --log-console or --log-file. Changing the startup script to output a log to /dev/null does the trick. No idea why though.

Yes I can ping each machine from the other. Port 10000 was in use by webmin, I 1) changed the port webmin uses and 2) disabled webmin for the purposes of testing. Still no joy. root login is the same on both linux boxes.
