Are you trying to install it over the network or from an unzipped package? Both the conditions are not recommended. Also check the permissions on temp.

Symantec have a tool by the name NSS which I think is very efficient as its consumer based. It uses the same definition store as that of SEP\SAV. It's kept somethere there at their FTP.

Did you ever have SSC on this server and AMS as well? You have to remove both before starting with the install. AMS will give you a fatal error if SSC has already been taken off, You will have to use 290301 to take it off.

For Vista, disabling the UAC should help.For XP, Try adding the smc.exe and smcgui.exe to DEP.

Generally the embedded db problem gets resolved by a repair. Other wise make sure that the port 2638 is not being used by any other application. Ghost is one that I know.

Open the log and search for "value 3" There might be multiple instances of it. The lines above this string log the probable reason of rollback.You may post it here if you find it a little cryptic.
