Altiris Deployment Solution 7.1. Yes It Works!

Recently we at ITS did a webcast around Deployment Solution 7.1.  In this webcast we discuss the following questions:

  • Is 7.1 a viable option for imaging?
  • Does PXE finally work?
  • How do I image?
  • What is the migration path from DS 6.9 to 7.1 on deployment solution?
  • Does initial deployment work?
  • How does Hardware Independent Imaging work?

Video quality is very poor!

The screen shots are hard to see, the presenter is continually saying umm and snorting.  Can't you come up with something better?

 

Sorry to be so critical but it is too hard too watch this!

That's funny your presentation seems to "suppose" the previous SP0, bundled with the Altiris SMP 7.0, was not working ?

If yes, you join our own position to reject DS 7.1 (sp0) as not a good Idea for upgrading exsting DS 6.9.

But honnestly, we still do not recommend existing 6.9 only DS customers (Deployment Solution), to migrate to DS 7.1, all the same SP1, except for specifics requirements. Why ?

  • As long as our DS 6.9 customers will loose the harware+basic software inventory when migrating to 7.1: forgot it ! NO MIGRATION
  • Symantec makes alreay a 1st step, integrating PCanywhere with DS 7.1, thanks for that: next step now please! (I should make a feature request?)

We OK now start using DS 7.1 for new CMS 7.1 customers, instead installing a DS 6.9 as we were doing previously CMS 7.0. I must say they are a lot of new cool things with 7.1, but not sure all will be enough to invest upgrading 6.9 to 7.1, for most our customers using CMS (Client Management Suite, integrating DS).

Regarding your presentation:

  • use GHOST because not only because a nice tool, but also the future supported one from Symantec, Rdeploy is EOL (EndOfLife)

We are now waiting for the WinPE 3 integration, because as 6.9 sp5, 7.1 sp1 is not able yet to use WinPE 3, and still use WinPe 2.1: An important TRICKS to tell:

  • As long winPe 3.0 not there, do not configure PXE preboot x64, use only x86 to simplify your life.
  • 1st: We not able to manual select which x86/x64 will be used if using/installing both preboot). Do not install x64.
  • 2nd: enough painfull to manage Vista drivers x86 for the WinPE preboot 2.1, in addition our x64 win7 OS drivers :(
