Scripted OS Install vs. Imaging with Windows 7

Sep 29, 2010 11:31 AM

Neil Rogers, Senior Symantec Consultant with ITS, describes the benefits that are gained by using a scripted OS install with Windows 7. While in the past, scripted OS installs have been mainly dedicated to servers and we would recommend using imaging for speed and easy, the tables have turned on what is the quicker and easier method to deploy Windows 7.

I realize that I am commenting on an old thread but I thought the driver question was worth answering.

For those of you new to Altiris 7.1. The solution includes something called DelpoyAnywhere. With this product you can upload your specific drivers into a repository. When a system is imaged and the DeployAnywhere option is selected, the correct drivers will be installed.

One of the keys to this process is that you must download the drivers from the OEM and extract them before you can import them. With the newer version of the product (7.1 SP2) you can upload more than just the Network and Drive Controllers.

You should also know that the DeployAnywhere utility also allows you to import drivers for WinPE

One limitation to using Deployanywhere is that it will not install a driver that is packaged inside of a utility. This type of install would be a standalone package.

Hi Chad,

Am interested in Altiris, would like to learn, could you tell me how to install NS, DS and how to create Image and deploy it on a machine.

How to intigrate drivers, how to create PXE boot menu...

Thanks

Vijay

I successfully am using Altiris 6.9 to push out the script.  I have downloaded the HP Softpaqs using HP SoftPaq Download Manager and use the HP System Software Manager as the executable to push out the Softpaqs

Script pushed from Altiris

\\<Server IP>\SSM\SSM.exe \\<Server IP>\SSM /Accept

(SSM is the HP System Software Manager)

HP SoftPaq Download Manager is like Microsoft's WSUS where you download and store on your server the drivers for each particular HP machine.

Or

You can slip stream them in using nLite before you create your scripted OS.  I don't like this way because I don't want to have to manage and update drivers all the time to slip stream them in.  The HP way you can go and check to see if there are any software updates and update your repository at any time.

Good Luck!

What is the process to get all the drivers installed when imaging Win7 machines?  You script the whole process?  Do I have to go out and find all the drivers and create a library of them?
