Veritas Cluster Server: Resilience For Your Applications in Virtualized Environments

Virtualization is the current buzz word, and IT organizations are adopting virtualization technologies and platforms at an ever-increasing rate. But virtualization has many risks that need to be addressed. These include how organizations monitor and protect applications, data and business services in the event of a failure.

To address this, Symantec today is announcing the latest version of Veritas Cluster Server. This new version of Veritas Cluster Server introduces capabilities for high availability and disaster recovery that IT organizations require for their virtual environment. The new solution will provide automatic application failover between virtual machines ensuring fast recovery in response to a wide range of failures including logical failures (for example operating system corruption) that render a virtual machine unusable.

Not only do we monitor applications running in virtual machines, we can now take action to recover them when an incident occurs. This eliminates the need for virtual machine reboots, keeping downtime to a minimum, allowing your customers, partners and employees to do business even in the face of human error, system failure or natural disaster.

In the case of Hyper-V environments, the end-to-end disaster recovery process is automated to recover Hyper-V virtual machines on the disaster recovery site in response to a site-level failure. In this release, we have simplified the end to end configuration experience for Veritas Cluster Server for Windows, including new wizards that automate virtual machine tasks for global disaster recovery and high availability.

In the case of VMware environments, Veritas Cluster Server significantly improves high availability for applications by allowing application failover between virtual machines without compromising VMware capabilities such as VMware vMotion and Distributed Resource Scheduler. This gives customers another level of protection beyond what our ApplicationHA product delivers so our customers can now select the appropriate level of availability based on service level agreements.

Veritas Cluster Server can be managed directly through VMware vCenter Server to simplify operations and allow them to use the features of the native stack without compromise.

Veritas Cluster Server users can choose how they want to architect their application failover environment: virtual to virtual, virtual to physical, physical to virtual – each configuration is supported. Further, with consistent support for Windows and Linux guest virtual machines, Veritas Cluster Server provides users the ability to simplify operations while improving application availability in VMware environments. This becomes especially critical for managing multi-tier business services which may have application components running across different operating systems and across physical/virtual. Veritas Cluster Server provides a feature called Virtual Business Service which provides visibility, control, and high availability of such multi-tier applications.

Patching, server maintenance and upgrades are also made easier and less impacting. Using Veritas Cluster Server, customers can move the application over to a secondary node, update the primary, and then move the application back to the primary. This process reduces the impact to the user, allowing business to continue with minimal interruption.
