Will Shared Insight Cache be applicable if my VM clients are stand alone with no connection to the SEPM server?
They would need to be managed clients.

Shared Insight Cache option itself must be specified firstly on the SEPM Server - have a look ast some documentation:
Shared Insight Cache runs independently of Symantec Endpoint Protection. However, you must configure Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager to specify the location of Shared Insight Cache so that your clients can communicate with Shared Insight Cache.
Shared Insight Cache is a Web service that runs independently of the client. However, you must configure Symantec Endpoint Protection to specify the location of Shared Insight Cache so that your clients can communicate with it. Shared Insight Cache communicates with the clients throughHTTPor HTTPS. The client's HTTP connection is maintained until the scan is finished.
Note: Shared Insight Cache is only available for the clients that perform scheduled scans and manual scans

Hello Chetan. I've read some of the documentation in the links. It references VDI a good amount and I can see how this would be a good product for a VDI environment. It also mentions to have this - Separate cache servers should be installed for each base image to maximize content overlap between systems.
We presently don't have a VDI environment but we are heavily virtualized. Does this product work in environments other than VDI. For instance we have a ESXi cluster with several hundred virtual machines in one location, but the operating systems vary from Windows 2000 to Windows 2008R2 and linux. Would one SIC server work for this environment being that there would be numerous operating systems that used different base images. I don't want to have dozens of SIC servers to use this product because it would defeat the purpose of having it.
It should work even though don't have VDI environment. Recently there is added support for VDI environment.
Check this old blog: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/blogs/shared-inside-cache-sep-121
You can test in your environment prior to deployement
SIC can only applicable when a managed environment.
vSIC feature is the one you can look for.
