Hi,

We're planning to do a setup of 12 servers, 6 of the servers are physical and 6 are virtual machines of Hyper-V.  Which of the Symantec Endpoint Protection is suitable for us?  Symantec Endpoint Protection or Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition?  The way we understand the features of the regular one, we only need to buy 6 licenses for the 6 physical servers and the virtual machines running inside will be protected also while the Small Business Edition, we need to purchase one for each servers which is 12.  Can you confirm this, thanks.

check this link for hyperv support

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH106269

Symantec does not provide a Hyper-V Server antivirus client, and Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager does not run on Hyper-V Server.

Note: This does not apply to Microsoft Windows Server with the Hyper-V role.

I believe what was meant are MS Server VMs running under a Hyper-V Server role - but these need to be licensed as well.

According to SEP EULA all instances of the software needs to be licensed - both on physical machines and virtualized:

17.3

Symantec Endpoint Protection - Virtual Instances

.17.3.A - Instances

Notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained in this License Agreement, each running instance

(physical and/or virtual) of the Licensed Software must be licensed. You create an “instance” of software

by executing the software’s setup or install procedure. You also create an “instance”of software by duplicating an existing instance.

References to the Licensed Software include “instances” of the Licensed Software. You “run an instance” of software by loading it into memory and executing one or more of its instructions. Once running, an instance is considered to be running (whether or not its instructions continue to execute) until it is removed from memory

So is it better for us just to purchase Small Business Edition for all the servers if budget is concern?

From the budget perspective SBE is definitely less expensive. When taking into consideration the configurations features and management features included - SEP Enterprise Edition is much more advanced product.

For reference have a look at a brief comparison:
