Using Altiris to image a replaced HDD

创建时间: 06 11 月 2012 | 12 条评论

Good day everyone. If I have to replace a hard drive in a computer in my company how do I get Altiris to remote image it? I'm a little confused on the process for that. I appreciate your help! Thank you.

Is there a Job in your console containing a "Deploy Image" Task? If so, you can drag and drop it onto the computer record in the Manage > Jobs and Tasks screen.

But you'll have to have had Deployment Solution set up in your environemnt for that site and to be using PXE for preboot and to have the NIC as first in the boot order in the PC's BIOS.

My environment has everything you described in the second paragraph and I have jobs and tasks built for deploying an image. But how will I (or Altiris) know what the computer record is if it is a blank empty hard drive?

It should recognise the MAC address, I believe. So if you drop the job onto the record of the old PC and get someone to boot it up it might work.

How do you image a new computer when it comes in?  You would use the same process (either boot via PXE or boot disk).  This would get you to the point where Altiris would see the machine and issue the waiting job that you would assign to it.

We use Predefined Computers to image new computers we get in. All the info needed is scanned from the box into a spreadsheet. I'm not sure I would have or could get everything needed to use this method.

I understand that you use Predefined computers to image, however, the new computer still has to have a way of booting to the Automation operating system (either via PXE (Network boot) or boot disk) to get to the point of being able to image a computer (new or otherwise).

We use PXE. Once I get it to boot to PXE I use a job that contains 1. Reboot to PXE. 2. Deploy Image. 3 Reboot to Production.

The PXE reboot works fine. But #2 does not start or even fails. I know what the machine name was before so I am running the job against it.

When it fails, are you getting error messages of any sort?

No sir. Not in the console or in the log files of the NS.

Without an error message it will be difficult to troubleshoot.  You may want to give Symantec a call to see if they can help by enabling some sort of logging or something.  I will escalate this thread to support, but I do not know how quickly or often they check this.

This is flaw. If you get a new hard disk in a machine that is already manged then it wont do initial deployment.
2 options i had. 1. If you stil know the hostname of the machine the drop a reboot to pxe. 2. Delete the machine account in altiris and wait till all the filters have updated. No ideal solution for this scenario. I believe it is fixed. v7.5
