Symantec File Share Encryption Compatibility FAQ (Symantec Encryption Desktop File Share Encryption) enables specific users to share protected files in a shared space, such as on a corporate file server, in a shared folder, or on removable media such as a USB drive.

 

Compatibility

Question 1: Does Symantec File Share Encryption work with Citrix or Terminal Servers? 
Answer: Yes. File Share Encryption is supported with Citrix and Windows Terminal Server in PGP Desktop 9.10 and above.

Question 2: What file systems does Symantec File Share Encryption support? 
Answer: Symantec File Share Encryption supports locally mounted FAT, FAT32, NTFS and DFS file systems. This means you can write to CDROMs or USBs as long as it is formatted as a filesystem. While Symantec File Share Encryption is independent of the file server so we work with various underlying filesystems and tape formats, but Symantec File Share Encryption does require a SMB/CIFS mount (we do not support NFS currently) to access the data. Typically this appears as a UNC mount point (h: drive) or a mount location (//ServerA/Home). 

Question 3: Backward compatibility: Is it compatible with old PGP keys? Can a user using previously version of PGP, say 7.x or 8.x decrypt information encrypted by users using Symantec File Share Encryption ?
Answer: Regarding key compatibility, yes, Symantec File Share Encryption  works with old PGP keys. Regarding, application compatibility, older versions of Symantec Encryption Desktop or PGP Desktop cannot decrypt Symantec File Share Encryption files as they have no knowledge of Symantec File Share Encryption and thus can't decrypt. This requires PGP 9.5 Desktop.

Question 4: Which client key modes are compatible with Symantec File Share Encryption ?
Answer: Symantec File Share Encryption requires client key access, thus CKM, GKM and SCKM key modes are supported. SKM key mode is supported on version 10 or later of Symantec Encryption Desktop (previously PGP Desktop).

Question 5: Can I continue to use my existing keys?
Answer: Yes, Symantec File Share Encryption supports both OpenPGP and X.509 credentials.

Question 6: How does a user know what files are NetShare protected? 
Answer: A log of previously accessed Symantec File Share Encryption folders is kept in their PGPprefs file. When a user brings up the Symantec Encryption Desktop and views the Symantec File Share Encryption pane they will see known folders. They can also browse the file server and look for the PGP lock icon on folders to determine if folders are protected folders. 

Question 7: Does Symantec FileShare Encryption support Sharepoint.
Answer: Fileshare Encryption for Sharepoint has limited support currently. Please see the following article for the current support status:
