Endpoint Protection

Issue/Introduction

After logging in to Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager, another log in screen opens within the Home tab and asks you again to enter your credentials: "Enter your user name and password to log on to Symantec Reporting."

You may also receive the warning "your computer name contains one or more nonstandard characters" when installing or upgrading the manager.

  • Error displayed when running the Management Server Configuration Wizard (this will block reconfiguration and database restoration):
    • "Your computer name contains one or more nonstandard characters. You need to change your computer name first."
  • Warning displayed when installing or upgrading the manager:
    • "Your computer name contains one or more nonstandard characters. This will impact the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager login process."
  • After login, on the Home tab, you are prompted again to enter your credentials:
    • "Enter your user name and password to log on to the Symantec Reporting."

Cause

This happens if there is an underscore (_) or other nonstandard character in the name of the computer that runs Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager.

These characters are incompatible with the DNS protocol and can cause problems with web sites that are addressed that name.

Resolution

If you are running the console on the same machine where the Endpoint Protection Manager is installed, change the name that is used in the "Server:" field at the login screen to "localhost") or to the IP address of the Manager.

In Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition (SEP SBE), the local console does not give an option to choose the "Server" address; you may work around this in SEP SBE by using the web console and addressing it by using localhost or the IP address.

If you receive the related warning during installation or upgrade, cancel the installation and rename the computer so that it uses only those characters compatible with DNS. If this is an existing Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager, you must rerun the Management Server Configuration Wizard after renaming the computer. You may then resume any interrupted upgrades or installations.
