This document provides answers to common pre-installation questions about Symantec Mail Security 7.0, 7.5, and 7.9 for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE).

SMSMSE General FAQs

Question: Where can I find step-by-step installation instructions?

Answer: The Implementation Guide contains complete installation instructions. You can find this and other documentation in the DOCS folder of your installation media and on the Symantec Web site.

Question: Will I need to reboot after installing or upgrading to SMSMSE 7.0 or 7.5?
Answer: It depends on the prompt based on the changes during fresh install or upgrade. If you get a reboot prompt appear, then please reboot the system

Note: In the case of Symantec Mail Security 7.5 if the VC++ redistributables are not already installed then post installation reboot is required.

Question: Can I install SMSMSE 7.0 or 7.5 remotely?
Answer: Yes remote install/upgrade is supported. 

Question: Can I import settings from a previous version of SMSMSE?
Answer: You can import settings from SMSMSE 7.0.x to 7.0.x and from SMSMSE 7.5.x to 7.5.x. When you upgrade SMSMSE most settings are preserved from earlier version.

Question: What version of .NET Framework is required?
Answer: .NET Framework version 2.0 is required on Exchange 2007. .NET framework version 3.5 is required on Exchange 2010/2013. For detailed system requirements, refer the implementation guide for your version of Microsoft Exchange.

Question: How can I completely remove a previous version of SMSMSE?
Answer: Use Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel to uninstall SMSMSE. If you encounter problems, follow the manual removal instructions for your version.

Question: How do I obtain and apply a license? 
Answer: Obtain the license from the Symantec Licensing Portal. You will need to supply your 11-digit serial number. You can apply the license when prompted during the installation or after the product is installed.

SMSMSE 7.9.1 FAQs

Question: Does SMSMSE 7.9.1 install on Windows 2019 Core server?
Answer: Yes

Question: Does the SMSMSE console work properly on Windows 2019 Core server?
Answer: It is recommended to manage SMSMSE instances installed on Windows 2019 Core server from a console installed on a non-core windows machine.  Some of the SMSMSE console features do not function properly when installed on a Windows 2019 Core server.

SMSMSE 7.9 FAQs

Question: Is SMSMSE 64bit application

Answer: SMSMSE 7.9 is native 64 bit application

Question: Is there any way to remove the emails from mailbox detected malicious as a result of delayed sand boxing result at gateway?
Answer: SMSMSE has introduced Remediation feature in 7.9. You can configure this feature to remove the emails based on results in gateway. For more details refer the implementation guide.

Question: Can I install SMSMSE Console on 32 bit machine
Answer: SMSMSE Console is now supported on 64 bit machines only. For more details please refer System requirements from implementation guide.

SMSMSE 7.5.5 FAQs

Question: Is there any option to block the email attachments based on its true type?

Answer: SMSMSE 7.5.5 has introduced a new feature called File Type Filtering.

You can use the following default file type filtering rules or create your own custom rules to block certain file type:

• Compressed File Rule
• Executable File Rule
• Document File Rule
• Image File Rule
• Multimedia File Rule

Question: What are the file types supported for File Type Filtering feature in SMSMSE 7.5.5?

Answer: The following six categories include all the file types it supports:

• Application & Executables
• Documents
• Images
• Videos
• Sounds
• Compressed Files

These categories have multiple sub-categories from where you can selected required file type to be blocked.

Question: What if I want to apply file type filtering rule to certain group of users?

Answer: File type filtering rule has the same configuration options as of content filtering rule, where you can define user conditions based on sender or recipient. You have an option to define SMTP addresses of the users or you can define the Active Directory group of users to whom you want to apply the rule.

Question: What happens to my existing multimedia, exe, and file name rules when I upgrade to 7.5.5?

Answer: The existing multimedia and exe rules would be migrated under File Type Filtering as they are retaining its current configuration. File name rule remains as is.

Question: How can I perform file filtering based on file extension in SMSMSE 7.5.5?

Answer: In SMSMSE 7.5.5, there are two ways to perform file filtering based on file extension:

• By using the File Name Rule under File Filtering Rules. This rule is helpful if you want to keep it simple without Sender or Recipient policy.
• By using the Attachment Name under Content Filtering Rules. This rule is helpful if you want to create multiple rules with Sender or Recipient policy.
