Public and Private Sector Partners to Help Protect Perth Businesses from Cybercrime

Australians are being encouraged to take some simple steps to improve their online security as part of National E-security Awareness Week.

National E-security Awareness Week aims to inform Australians about the importance of e-security and highlights simple steps all Australians can take to protect their personal and financial information.

The week involves a range of events designed to promote the simple things people can do to stay smart online.

“Australians are increasingly using the internet in their everyday lives, doing their banking, shopping, communicating with friends and family and running their businesses,” the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy said.

National E-security Awareness Week 2009 highlights a shared responsibility for e-security as the Australian Government partners with more than 30 major organisations from the ICT industry, commercial business, state and territory government agencies and the community.

“I’d like to acknowledge the fantastic support of our partners who are participating this coming week and encourage everyone to take part in the activities and events on offer throughout the week ahead,” Senator Conroy said.

Symantec is proud to be a partner in National E-security Awareness Week again in 2009,” Craig Scroggie, vice president and managing director, Pacific Region, Symantec said.

“The online world has so much to offer and our aim this week is to help equip local businesses with the skills and knowledge to protect themselves from increasingly sophisticated and targeted cyber security threats so they can interact and do business online with confidence.”

In Perth, Symantec with the Australian Government and the assistance of the Western Australian Government, will hold an e-security business seminar at the Bentley Technology Park Function Centre this evening. The seminar will discuss some practical tips to help the public secure their computer, including:

  • Choosing a better, stronger password and change it at least twice a year.
  • Installing security software and update it regularly.
  • Using caution before clicking on links or attachments from unknown sources.
  • Being careful about the information you provide about yourself and others online as information is valuable.
  • Creating backups of your files and programs and store them in a different location to your computer.
