V8 Legends Star at the MCG

SYDNEY, AustraliaJuly 28, 2009 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), makers of Norton 360 security software, has hosted a unique showdown at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), pitting V8 Supercars’ best drivers against AFL champions in the lead-up to this weekend’s Norton 360 Sandown Challenge V8 Supercar event.

Reigning Bathurst Champions Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup, along with Holden Racing Team star Will Davison, raced radio-controlled V8 Supercars against Essendon’s David Hille and Richmond great Matthew Richardson on a scaled-down version of Sandown’s historic layout.

Lowndes, Whincup and Davison impressed with the footballers’ prowess behind the controls – although none feared they would lose their day jobs.

“It was quite a unique experience to be racing a V8 Supercar at the MCG, even if it was quite a bit smaller than the real thing,” four-time Sandown endurance race winner and Norton Internet Safety Ambassador Lowndes said.

“The AFL guys really gave Jamie and me a run for our money, although I reckon they have done this before as there was plenty of close racing with just enough panel rubbing to make it fun.”

Lowndes and Whincup were joined at the MCG by Sandown legend Jim Richards as well as modern day stars Jason Bright and Mark Winterbottom, who signed autographs and also tried their hand at the radio-controlled cars.

The scaled-down racing will be one of the feature attractions at this weekend’s Norton 360 Sandown Challenge – races thirteen and fourteen of the 2009 V8 Supercar Championship Series.

Symantec is using the Norton 360 Sandown Challenge as a platform to raise community awareness of the need for greater Internet safety and security.

“Motorsport is a great platform for communication with consumers, especially given that our security software is engineered for speed,” said Symantec’s consumer spokesperson Pacific, Matthew Drake.

Competitors in the Mini Norton 360 Sandown Challenge will be able to test their radio-controlled car racing skills against each other around a miniaturised version of Sandown.

The three fastest competitors on each day of the event will be presented with prizes on the official V8 Supercar podium, and first place will receive a special-edition trophy signed by the entire V8 Supercar field.

“In addition to the Mini Norton 360 Sandown Challenge, Symantec will be handing out 15,000 copies of Norton 360 Internet security trialware and providing racegoers with information about Internet security and safety issues,” said Matthew Drake.

The Norton 360 Sandown Challenge gets underway on Friday, 31 July at Sandown Raceway in Melbourne’s outer east.
